Wrestling Memories: Ultimate Warrior vs Macho King Randy Savage
Today I want to talk about one of my all time favourite matches, The Ultimate Warrior vs Macho King Randy Savage from WrestleMania VII. When I first got into wrestling in 1989, Ultimate Warrior was my guy. He was my hero and, in my eyes,, he could do no wrong.
Even though he was a heel, I also loved the Macho Man Randy Savage! However, when Savage crossed the line and attacked the Warrior at the 1991 Royal Rumble, I was mad as hell. I actually think that Warrior vs Slaughter at the 91 Royal Rumble is a hell of a match and that in general, the Ultimate Warrior is very underrated as far as his in ring work goes.
Never in a million years did I think that he would lose to Sgt Slaughter, but the beating he got from the Macho King was very hard to watch, nearly as hard as that brutal knee to the back Slaughter gives Warrior right at the end of the match! This was one of the first times in my fandom that I was legit in shock at what I was seeing. Up until this point, I was on the edge of my seat as I loved all of the matches, especially Rockers vs Orient Express (my favourite opening match of all time by the way) and what happened to the Warrior just knocked the wind out of me.
I know I was a kid, but I feel back then the WWF did such a great job at making you care and get emotionally invested into certain characters. I am not sure what it is like for a little Roman Reigns fan in 2019, but I certainly hope that they have the same love and investment into him as a hero like I did the Warrior when I was 9 years old.
Anyway, the match was made for WrestleMania VII and I was so shocked when it was announced the match would be a career-ending match and I was very, very nervous. I wanted the Warrior to get his revenge, but deep down I still liked Randy Savage and truth be told I did not want to lose either of them.
I remember watching WrestleMania VII on TV with my grandfather and we were having a fantastic time. Then it came time for the career-ending match. I remember how majestic Randy Savage’s entrance was and how one dude looked to be really struggling to carry that throne thing him and Sherri were sitting on. Then the Warrior’s music hit! This was a Warrior like we had never seen before, not just the awesome artwork on his jacket and attire. I mean the way he methodically walked to the ring. You knew that this match was for real!
I freaking love this match and consider it to be an absolute masterpiece. From the entrances to the end with Elizabeth saving Randy from Sherri. The slow start with Warrior showing dominance to Savage. Savage getting the upper hand with the help of Sherri, the Warrior willing to walk away at one point, only to return and put the biggest ass beating on Savage we ever saw. Not to mention the fact that Warrior kicked out of five elbow drops and Savage even survive the gorilla press slam.
This is a match that takes you through every inch of the emotion spectrum. I was so glad that the Warrior won, but at the same time sad that this would be the last time I ever saw Randy Savage (hey I actually thought that was what was going to happen) so it was a very bittersweet moment for me.
Many people will give every bit of credit for this match to Randy Savage and I feel that is very unfair. It takes two to tango… actually, three because Sherri was awesome in the match and then at the end as well. Warrior more than did his part and this is not just my favourite Ultimate Warrior match of all time, but one of my favourite matches in general. One weird thing about this match is that here in the UK (I cannot for sure say if it was the same in the USA) the match is cut kind of weird on the VHS and there is a part where it jumps forward and you miss part of the action. Even on the tagged classics DVD re-release that Silver Vision did has this!
I would love to know what you guys thought of this match and where you would rate in not just in Warrior’s career, but for Savages as well.
