Today I did something so simple as opening a fridge door and I snagged my big toe and ripped the toenail up. It didn't hurt at first, but I noticed it was loose. So I had to make a doctor's appointment because I found out in January that I am diabetic, and I know foot issues can be a thing with diabetic people. So luckily he said nothing bad in that situation is happening because it doesn't look to be infected. But he said there is a good chance the nail is coming off.
I had this happen to me 22 years ago, and it sucked then, and I am not looking forward to it happening again.
Anyone else ever have a toenail or even a fingernail come off because of their own stupidity??

Not by stupidity, but I got both my big toenails ingrown and infected. Went to the docs, they jammed these curved scissors things down the side of my toe and just literally pulled the whole nail out of both toes. They cleaned it up and sterilised it so the nail wouldn't ever grow back.

Yeah, I have a tale.
Back in March, I tried to dig out an ingrown toenail myself (like an idiot) on my left big toe. Of course it got infected.
After not showing any symptoms, I woke up one morning with a huge toe that oozed out from every part of the nail when touched.
It was a Sunday, so I went to an urgent care clinic. The doofy P.A. there just gave me something topical and sent me on my way. $300 AFTER insurance (because unfortunately for me, they JUST lost their network status with Cigna, my insurance company).
I applied it religiously for 3 weeks and determined that it wasn't getting any better. I called my general provider doc and she said that I needed to get in to see a REAL doctor immediately (but not her, as she was booked up).
So I told my boss and left work. This was a Friday afternoon. The doc I saw said "Yep, that's infected, all right. Let me have our podiatrist come and take a look at it. Whoops! Appears that he just left early. You'll have to come back on Monday. In the meantime, if the infection got down to your bone, we'll have to amputate your toe." They took a couple of x-rays and sent me on my way (to worry about it all weekend).
So yeah, Monday rolls around, and I went back in to see the podiatrist. He told me that the x-ray showed that it had NOT gone down to the bone, but the toenail would need to come off.
He stated to remove it, and said "Ummm... When was the last time you had to clip this nail?" I told him about the ingrown part weeks before. He said "Yeah, your toenail died, and there WAS another one growing UNDERNEATH it. I say 'was' because I accidentally cut off the new toenail as well."
The good news is that the infection went away and it healed up OK. The nail is TRYING to grow back, but it's yellow-ish and uglier than homemade soup.

Yep. Wad moving a chair inside my house one time. Just a few inches over and caught my big toe just right to almost completely rip the nail off. Oddly didn't hurt at all until the next day, when it started throbing.
Didn't go to a doctor though. Just pushed it back down and put a piece of gauze on top, the wrapped it in medical tape. Fused itself back in place nicely, though that particular nail is now a little harder than the others.

Not a toe nail, but a finger nail.
Back in middle school, it was always a game to try shutting someone's locker door right after they open it. Someone did that to me and my finger got caught in the door with the latch locked. The doctor told me it would have been better had I just broke the finger, but it turned out being a bad sprain. Ultimately, I lost the finger nail and it felt really weird not having it

Back in 2013 I had to have half of my big toe nail removed. I snagged it on the corner of the cabinet in the bathroom. Long story short, when healing it became ingrown, so I went to the doctor and they had to cut the toe nail in half and remove that half of it.
The two needles of numbing medication was the most painful thing I've ever felt in my life. The rest was fine. I didn't even feel him cutting or ripping the nail off, but he was like "yeah, there's not any way to not feel the needles...this is gonna hurt bad".

As a kid I ripped my big toe nail off. Got caught in the carpet while I was running around. Oh the pain.

Had part of my big toe nail removed after it became ingrown. As the other poster mentioned, the shot to numb the toe was painful. Otherwise everything aftertastes my that was fine.

Got mine snagged on the dog bed's zipper when I was running around the living room as a kid, and ripped it almost all the way off. That shiz forking hurt. I was screaming bloody murder.
I've been far more careful of walking near any low lying zippers since.

These stories sound so painful.
Moral of the story seems to be to wear shoes if you can.
