For the last 15 years, especially perhaps during high times for the in-ring content (2005) and periods where big names were part of it (2010), people have hoped to see TNA become real competition to the WWE. It never happened. Ultimately, these last 17 years TNA has been more of an ECW. Always there, but never really able to give WWE a run for its money. To me, the creation of AEW - knock on wood as far as its success goes - has opened us up to the fact that TNA was always an ECW and not a WCW. Basically, from 2002 on you had WWE at the top and then no real competition. Now that we have AEW becoming real competition (hopefully), it fills the role that WCW filled in the '90s. So where does TNA rank? #3, the ECW equivalent, which is really what it was the whole time ('02-'19). For its first 17 years, it was a #3 during a time where there was no "#2." Now the #3 slot appears much more clearly. Thoughts on this analysis? Obviously there are clear differences between TNA and ECW and AEW and WCW, but I present these comparisons in the context of rank rather than style of writing, booking, or in-ring product.

No offense, but the WCW comparison could have waited until AEW actually proves itself. Right now, it's just attracting more negativity and ridicule.
And TNA should definitely have built around being an alternative. They did have the X-Division, which was somewhat countercultural to the WWE norm at the time. They couldn't get past an old-school booking mentality that I felt held the heavyweight division back, then picking up every single WWE cast off and tying the company to them eventually became meme-able.

TNA hiring Vince Russo on 3 separate occasions tells you all you need to know

TNA was never really able to elevate itself and be more than a low rent second rate promotion.
It was a vanity promotion for Jeff Jarrett, Dixie Carter, and their buddies. Later Hogan and Bischoff.

This is absurd. AEW has yet to have a TV rating as large as TNA's. Everyone going on and on about how AEW is doing great and amazing ratings, seems to forget that TNA not only did better ratings for most of their Spike TV run, but on a smaller network than TNT with nowhere near as much promotion. Crap on TNA all you want, but they had the balls to go head to head with WWE's flagship show. It was a mistake but at least they did it. AEW is neck and neck with WWE's third brand.

Um, AEW is actually beating WWEs third brand by a quarter of of a million viewers. I would necessarily call that neck and neck.
