Wrestling Memories Silver Vision/Coliseum Home Video
Today I want to talk about how I was addicted to collecting WWF VHS tapes in the 90s. Here in the UK, the distribution of WWF videos was handled by a company called Silver Vision. The tapes still had Coliseum Home Video on them as they did in the USA, but it was Silver Vision who put them out here. I had so much fun collecting these and right up to my teenage years and until DVD’s became a thing, these were displayed with pride in my room. The very first Silver Vision WWF video that I got was The Best of Saturday Nights Main Event. I got this via a poster magazine called Sporting Superstars which was a big deal here in the UK. The reason that I picked this tape was that you got a free series 1 (and yes it was series 1 before people start saying it was series 2!) Hulk Hogan figure and the fact it had The Rockers on the front also made it awesome. I did eventually send in my “stamped addressed envelope” which resulted in me getting their catalog and also being on their mailing list. Ordering something back in 1990-1991 was not like it is today. You had to wait 4-6 weeks for delivery! It is kind of funny that these days you are ready to kill someone if Amazon’s next day shipping takes a couple of hours longer than you would like, but back then waiting a month was deemed acceptable. I waiting every damn day for that tape to show up and when it did, I watched it over and over again. The best matches were Hulk Hogan vs Big Boss Man in the cage and The Rockers vs The Brain Busters. The next tape I got which officially started my collection as now I had two, was The Ultimate Warrior. I loved the artwork on these Collector Series VHS tapes and Silver Vision was pretty awesome giving their series a rather uniform look so they looked great on display. I still have that original Saturday Nights Main Event and Ultimate Warrior tapes and the cool thing is I also got these WWF Tattoos at the time and put them on the tape and they are still there. The first PPV event that I got on VHS was SummerSlam 88 which I may be mistaken here, I think was one of if not the first PPV to be released on VHS here in the UK. In 1992, I started a paper route so I had more disposable income and that was when my collection really exploded. I would purchase tapes all the time and amassed a pretty impressive collection. Around 1992, with Survivor Series 1992 being the first, I am 99 percent sure it was this or Smack Em Whack Em. Silver Vision changed the style of their artwork. Each VHS tape now had this ripped kind of design to it, no matter the show it was. While I liked collecting the different PPV events it was compilation tapes such as Smack Em, Whack Em, Grudge Matches and Battle of the Superstars that I loved. I always enjoyed how they would have these skits as part of the tape usually with Bobby Heenan, Sean Moony and Lord Alfred Hayes. One of the tapes that I was most excited about was released in 1993 and that was a tape that featured matches from Monday Night RAW. We did not get RAW on TV until 1995 here in the UK and had to make do with highlights on a Saturday morning on WWF Mania. So, getting a tape that was fully dedicated to Monday Night RAW was something that I was very excited for. My WWF VHS collecting came to an end in 2001 when I got a PlayStation 2 and I started purchasing DVDs instead. For a short while not all VHS releases were also on DVD so that was annoying. One fond memory I have of Silver Vision was when the WWF changed to WWE. Silver Vision had a massive blow out sale of all their products that had the WWF logo on them. I cashed in big time. This would have been in 2002, the year I started university so I had my own place to proudly display my collection, not to mention I also had a good part time job so I had way more disposable income. These days I no longer really collect WWE DVD’s, I think the Shawn Michaels Unreleased Collection was the last one I got. I also sold off a lot of my VHS collection when I made the jump to DVD, but I do still have two huge boxes of tapes. Silver Vision did an awesome thing when they started their Tagged Classics line of DVD’s., which as far as I know were exclusive to the UK. These were two disc sets that would have two PPV’s or two WWF/E specials on them. For example, you would have one with WrestleMania 1 and 2, SummerSlam 88 and 89. You would also have specials like Year In Review 95 and Year In Review 96. These were not touched up in anyway and were just the VHS slapped onto a DVD. What was great about this was that they were not edited or butchered like many of the WrestleMania, SummerSlam and other “high end and high quality” collections that were put out were. No horrible blurring of the WWF logo, no edited commentary or theme music! They were just the way they were when they were released on VHS. I have noticed that a lot of the older Silver Vision releases I have started to get pretty bad tape rot. Not that I would ever watch these over firing up the WWE Network of course, but I have heard that my tapes are not the only ones this has happened to so it must be because of the way they were made or the kind of tape they used. Thanks for reading and I hope the included pictures of some of my collection have made it a bit more interesting. I would love to know your memories of WWF Silver Vision/Coliseum Videos 😊 Oh, one last thing, the early Silver Vision videos had this awesome intro that showed action from the 1988 Survivor Series. This was on a ton of the tapes back in the day and it was something that I never, ever fast-forwarded past.

Loved Coliseum Video. Many fond memories of going to video stores back in the day and looking through all the WWF and WCW ones they had on the shelves.
I've since converted all my VHS tapes to DVD but man those tapes will always have a special place in my heart.

I got rid of a ton, probably close to 30 or more tapes, but I have kept quite a lot of them. My wife asks every time we clean the attic why we still have this tapes, but I will never get rid of them lol. What were some of your favorite tapes? Also I have always found it interesting how in the USA VHS tapes were in cardboard boxes, but here in the UK they were in plastic clamshell style cases.

The only one I own is Rowdy Roddy Piper's Greatest Hits. In the clam shell case. I will never part with it, even though I haven't watched it in over 20 years.

That summerslam 88 tape is pretty interesting. I wonder if the original plans for Beefcake/Honky match had gone on if they would have a Brother Love segment with Warrior or if he would have been involved in a squash match with someone of name. I think Warrior on Brother Love would be much more memorable than Hacksaw.

Yes the Piper interviewing himself was pure genius. Loved it. The only one I own is Rowdy Roddy Piper's Greatest Hits. In the clam shell case. I will never part with it, even though I haven't watched it in over 20 years. I would rent that from my video store once a month for about a year when it first came out. lol

Being Canadian we just had Coliseum Home Video or WWF Home Video..... however, thanks to certain sites on the internet where you can get videos, I did end up getting all the UK exclusive Coliseum Videos and putting them to DVD.
When I think of Coliseum Video, I automatically think of the old school clam shells. I actually bought a bunch of videos a few years ago for my display collection, and I am so glad I did. Just looking at them reminds me of being a kid, and renting videos from my local variety store.

man, coliseum video was my life as a kid. i prob spent a retirement's worth of money renting them, lol. my parents could never afford to buy them at $39.95 each or whatever. so i always rented them. only tapes i actually ordered from wwf catalog/mag was royal rumble 92 & wrestleMania 8. i had accts at like a dozen video stores in surrounding towns JUST to rent their wrestling tapes. occasionally they would sell some older ones or id ask, and if they werent popular renters, they would sell em to me. when video stores went out of biz id usually snag em up for sale. one of my big excitments in life was finding new video stores and seeing what wrestling tapes they had. i ended up with hundreds and hundreds of them. used to sell em on ebay years ago. man those were the days.
years later i bought an all region dvd player to get a bunch of the silver vision tagged classics. never understood why u guys got these and the usa didnt! sadly i had to sell those too. sold off everything i had years ago when injured in a car accident and lost everything. but those were awesome.

Interesting to read how so many of you guys have memories renting these. Here in the UK WWF VHS tapes were not all that expensive. You were usually looking at £14.99 for a PPV which is under 20 bucks. A video like Bret Hart or Undertaker was usually £12.99, then we even had a select few that were priced at £10.99 and we had other ones over here in the UK that were priced at £7.99 These were cheaper tapes that lasted around 45 to 60 mins and they were called The Sovereign Series, I do still have a couple of these in my collection. Actually, it was on one of these that I saw how Texas Tornado lost the title to Mr Perfect.
If you look at my pictures the tape called A Video Tribute To Shawn Michaels was a series that was released during the New Generation era. I have this one, Diesel, Bret Hart and two Undertaker ones. These were budget releases priced at £5.99 when they were released.
Silver Vision were very clever in that they had tapes at every end of the pricing spectrum so there was something for everyone.
As far as renting goes, I only had two video rental stores where I grew up and only one of them had WWF videos. It was kind of weird as they only had SummerSlam 92. Survivor Series 92 and Royal Rumble 93. They never got new ones in and they had those tapes on the shelf until they closed their doors!
Thanks to all you guys who have replied it is awesome to see that these tapes were such a huge part of other folks lives to.

I love the Coliseum Videos and I collect only the big clamshell ones. I have a bunch of the smaller boxed ones but those big suckers just bring me back to the great ol days of going to the video store. I'm almost done with the collection but it's difficult biting the bullet on a $125 Bruno Sammartino one. The most I ever paid was $50 for the Randy Savage VHS. I know one day I'll get that damn Bruno!

I have a couple of boxes on the attic full with Silver Vision Coliseum video's.I collected almost all of them. My favorites were Wrestlefest and Supertape.I also enjoyed Crunch Classics,Hottest Matches and even Funniest Moments to name a few. As hbkjason said about the intro on the early releases,I also never fast forwarded these as I thought it was awesome! Great memories as I miss those days and i'll never part with these as there is something about videocassettes that I just cannot explain.Nostalgia probably. One thing about the ppv's I didn't like was the most of the time completely different covers than the U.S. releases.I always hated that, anyone else who didn't like that either?

Thanks to all you guys who have replied it is awesome to see that these tapes were such a huge part of other folks lives to. During the New Generation era Coliseum also put out some tapes that were low priced, maybe $10 dollars. It was usually either a tribute to a wrestler (Bret or Shawn) or clips from shows (Raw, Superstars, Action Zone) and also one with different In Your House Clips and a Free For All show. There was also a few Coliseum shows in the early 90s that were much cheaper, maybe $20 or less. I don't remember where I got some of them but I had them. It was before I found Suncoast in the malls where you could usually get very cheap VHS tapes in the late 1990s. It's funny you should mention your video store not getting any new tapes. My local store was pretty similar. They had almost every PPV and a majority of the specials but only up until 1990. Then they would usually skip a PPV or two each year and pretty much stopped getting any new PPVs after WrestleMania 9. They had a random WCW World War 3 1995 which was crazy because the whole time they were around the only had two NWA (not WCW) tapes. I found a Blockbuster in late 1993 and wound up getting to see a bunch of the tapes my video store didn't have. Sometimes flea markets would have the tapes missing and I would buy them. The crazy thing about all the different stores and flea markets was that no one ever seemed to have the same videos.

Gotta admit, Even though my VHS days are long over I still get a nostalgia feeling anytime I see these tapes at flea markets.
