Wrestling Memories: Watching WWF Challenge At Age 9 In A Bar In Mallorca
This is a bit of a shorter one this week (hey I can hear some of you shouting woo hoo!) but it is a wrestling/childhood memory that for some reason has always stuck with me. While I got into WWF in 1989 it would be 1990 when I went full crazed wrestling obsessed maniac. I was so into everything the WWF did at this time. It was my main obsession, so much so that when I found out we were going to Mallorca for two weeks in October. How I was going to watch WWF Superstars, Wrestling Challenge and Prime Time Wrestling was my number one concern! I managed to get my first WWF shirt on the first day of vacation, it was a bootleg Hulk Hogan shirt! So, I was enjoying myself, but I did keep wondering if Ultimate Warrior would be on TV this week, was I missing The Rockers doing something cool and what about Randy Savage? I watched a lot of wrestling in the early days with my grandfather and he was on vacation with us and he would talk wrestling with me whenever I wanted. One night, we went out for something to eat and then we ended up in this more “family-friendly” bar. My grandad knew the owner really well so he hooked me up with all the free pool I could handle which was cool. It was getting late and I had had enough pool and I was just sitting at a table, pounding down Pepsi and the owner of the bar said what was wrong and asked if I was having a good holiday. I said I was, but I was missing my wrestling. “oh, you like wrestling, let’s see if it is on” was his reply. He got up, took me to the main part of the bar where there was this huge ass TV that was showing some kind of motor racing. There were actually people watching it, but he just changed the channel and wouldn’t you know it WWF Wrestling Challenge was on. Thanks to the internet and my own awesome memory, I know this show like the back of my hand (it was the October 14th show) and in all honesty it was your typical weekly WWF show, but it did have The Legion of Doom actually wrestling and an interview with The Ultimate Warrior on it so for me at this time it was a good show. I just sat there glued to what at the time was the largest TV I had ever seen wrestling on. You would think other people in the bar would be pissed that the owner turned off the motorsport to put wrestling on for some kid, but a lot of people actually got quite into it as the WWF was really gaining steam in Europe at this time. I know that this is not the most exciting story in the world, but it is kind of weird the way our memories work. This episode of WWF Wrestling Challenge is permanently burned into my brain! This was the only wrestling that I saw during this vacation, but despite going to see some historical cathedral, going to an awesome water park, going to the beach every day, capturing a lizard in my hat (true story) it was watching WWF in a bar on a giant TV with my grandad and his buddy that I remember most fondly. That was the power of the WWF to my 9 year old brain in 1990! I would love to hear some “weird” stories from you guys of strange places that you were able to watch wrestling when you were growing up.

No strange places. Just in our living room and then a few WCW PPV’s parties at my manager’s house when I was in my early 20’s.

No strange places for me either. If I didn't watch it at my house, it was either at a friends or another family members house like grandparents/uncle.

I could see the TV in the living room from the hallway toilet when I was a kid. So multiple times I didnt want to miss something so Id keep the door open while dropping the deuce.
Now that Im older with my own place. I made sure my TV in my bedroom was mounted on a swivel mount so I can still watch...but thats the only strange places Ive ever watched wrestling.

another great WM story!
i too have wrestling memories from watching in a bar. i was 15. it was 1988. my dad made me get a job. i was from old school hick town and everyone kid had to get a job. so i got a dishwashing job a place cal the Cullom Knoll. it was family food/bar place. my dad shot pool on pool leagues for this place so he hooked me up (AWESOME! sarcasm). i ended up geting 4 of my friends jobs there as dishwashers/busboys too.id work from 6pm to about 1-2 am on fri/sat night. one friday night i got done working and was sitting at edge of bar watching the tv waiting for my dad to come get me, and someone changed the channel to wwf challenge that was on from 1-2 am. i was like oh hell yeah. my dad got there half way thru and i made him stay until it was over. he went and shot pool with the owner. so every fri night, that was routine. the place would give me and my buddy snacks and drinks while watching it too. in summertime, we rode our bikes there and on way home would stop at golf n stuff and go jump in the trampoline/ball things outside at 2;30 am when it was closed. fun times! for some reason, i remeber honkytonk man most, when thinking about it watching at the bar.
