Anyone else think, if booked seriously enough, Boogeyman could have been champ in the 2000s? It's kind of like Doink, Papa Shango, other characters that could either be "goofy" or truly dark/evil. To me, if done wright, Marty Wright could have been at the top. He originally was booked as a serious character in OVW.
What's everyone think?

A Hardcore or Intercontinental Champion, yes. World Champion, no. He was over for a while and I was a fan, but really was a short term novelty act. Plus, he was old when he started wrestling.

What would a guy with worms coming out of his mouth do with a championship belt?
To quote Prichard, "he didn't need the belt."

Even if The Boogeyman was treated more seriously, it was still too much of a gimmick to have him carry the brand.
Very fun character, just didn't need a belt.

Nope. The guy shouldn’t have even been in the company. Never cared for him and it seemed his only “talent” was eating worms. Nothing about him was entertaining not even his look.

I liked the character. It was good for video games.

No way. Not even worthy for the IC title!

Boogy was just fine as a gimmick worker. Didn't need any belt.

If the current Universal Champion can take finisher after finisher, fall off stages, into fire, and get up, no sell everything and win, then I think the Boogeyman could have been WWE Champion too.

Nah.
Gimmick aside the guy was pretty poor in the ring IMHO.

Cool character, but he wasn't really anything more than a lower mid-carder for most of his career. He would've been in the Hardcore Title picture in 2002

Boogeyman's main issue was his ring work. He was fun during segments but his matches were mediocre.
He was over like crazy and sold lots of merch so if his in ring action had been good I would've imaged him in the US picture.

Making him Champion would have been bad for business
