Wrestling Memories: The “Death” Of The Ultimate Warrior!
One thing I have mentioned a few times since I started going through my wrestling memory banks is how The Ultimate Warrior was my hero as a child. I liked Hulk Hogan, but as a kid, it was all about the Warrior for me. I wondered where the Warrior would go after destroying Randy Savage at WrestleMania VII and I hoped that he would get to face Hulk Hogan and once again be the WWF Champion. Ultimate Warrior’s feud after WrestleMania VII was a bit of a weird one and a childhood memory that is burned into my brain. Shortly after WrestleMania VII, Ultimate Warrior was a guest on the Funeral Parlor with Paul Bearer. Bearer was taunting the Warrior about how he feared death, but the Ultimate Warrior, my hero stood strong and got in Paul Bearer’s face. I was on the edge of my seat ready for him to kick butt…… when Undertaker came from behind and attacked him. Now before I get into what happened I have to say that looking back on this recently, this whole moment was shot beautifully. You go from having a close up of Warrior threatening Paul Bearer to a close up of the casket you think is just background decoration and then it swings open and it is The Undertaker. Seriously this was done so, so well and I am sure the way it was shot and shown was a huge reason it felt so real to me as a child. Undertaker beat the crap out of the Warrior and dumped him in the casket, which looked so cool by the way. Off-topic here, but we really need a two-pack of Undertaker, Warrior and this casket from Mattel. Anyway, he slammed the casket shut and then it all got so, so real for me. Again, this was so well done that my 9 year old brain could not process what was happening and I legit thought the Warrior was dead. How could I think someone would die on TV? Well that was the power the WWF had on me at the time, I believed everything they did and Warrior was my hero was this was actually the first time since I started watching in 1989 that I had seen him vulnerable like this. Come to think of it up until this point apart from Optimus Prime in the Transformers Movie, I do not think I had seen any of my heroes in a really vulnerable position like this. I ran to my mum who was making a sandwich in the kitchen, I was trembling as I said he is dead! My mum kind of freaked out and said who was dead, thinking it was the dog she told me years later. I told her The Ultimate Warrior was dead and she just kind of looked at me and tried to reassure me he was not. It is just a show, he will be back next week she said. I was not having any of it and thought I had seen someone get killed on TV, not just someone, but my hero. It is funny to think about this now, but I sure as hell did not find it funny at the time. In the weeks that would follow this storyline got really weird. Jake the Snake Roberts would try and help the Warrior face his fears so he could take on The Undertaker. What I remember most from this was the snake pit where Warrior was kicking snakes. This went on for longer than most people remember, but it was really more about Jake Roberts turning heel than anything to do with Ultimate Warrior vs Undertaker. T he weirdest thing was when the Ultimate Warrior asked him to bury him which Jake did in a grave Warrior dug himself! We never got that big one on one match between Warrior and Undertaker It happened at a few house shows and there is a match on a home video that was a body bag match if I remember rightly. While it never really went anywhere, I still think this was a really cool angle. Some may look and say it was all hokey stuff, but I think the skits were very well done and they actually did a great job in making an evil, nasty heel out of Jake Roberts more than anything else. While I loved the feud between Randy Savage and Jake Roberts I wonder if we would have gotten Ultimate Warrior vs Jake Roberts before that had he not been fired. I would love to know other people’s memories of this feud between the Ultimate Warrior and Undertaker. Also was there any house show matches or VHS tapes that had Ultimate Warrior vs Jake Roberts during this time as I would love to see or read about that.

Great feud between Taker and Warrior, to bad it didn't get a big PPV pay-off, but maybe they didn't want Taker to lose outright just yet so maybe that's why it never happened. The Jake and Warrior build to the feud was great and they were set to have a feud after Summer Slam 1991 but Warrior got fired (if I remember correctly, Jake talked about this on his WWE DVD). I'm not too angry about that because I really liked the Savage/Jake feud in late 1991-early 1992, but it would have been cool to see a Jake/Warrior feud. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Sid Justice took over Warrior's spot after Summer Slam 1991 and he started wrestling Undertaker and Jake at house shows.
I cannot seem to find anything saying that Jake and Warrior had a match in 1991, though, I found some interesting things about the Warrior/Taker matches at house shows in 1991. It says on July 30th, 31st and on August 2nd of 1991 Randy Savage subbed for the Ultimate Warrior at the event and faced the Undertaker in a body bag matches at those shows. Being a huge fan of Randy Savage, I would have loved to have seen these two matches - other than a tag match between Savage & Duggan vs. Taker & Jake I don't think Randy Savage and the Undertaker ever wrestled each other. Also, on July 14th the Ultimate Warrior and the Undertaker wrestled in a casket match, unless that is a typo, this would be the first casket match in the WWF.

From what I recall, Taker was being built as the next big monster for Hogan to face at Wrestlemania 8. So we could've gotten a big PPV match maybe at Survivor Series at least (as in elimination). But we all know it wasn't possible since Hogan's appearance at Arsenio was a disaster and they had to rush the Taker-Hulk feud. Jake vs. Warrior would've been epic. In fact it should've been Hogan & Warrior vs. Taker & Jake at SummerSlam.

Also, that survivor series would have been epic, especially considering Flair, Sid, and Taker were all recent WCW stars at the time (1991), it would have been as close to a WWF vs. WCW match we could have gotten at the time.

The Warrior/Hogan v. Taker/Jake match if it had happened at summerslam would surely have been better but no one can take the pinfall without looking bad in the future. Also Sid Justice needed to be showcased somehow and I think Taker and Jake being involved would overshadow Sid. I think Taker would be the most willing to be pinned but he had the biggest foreseeable future I think. Jake probably wouldn't mind much but he too was slated for big things. Warrior and Hogan probably shouldn't be pinned in the main event.

Kinda keep him a tweener for the match.

They did film a match between Taker/Savage in late 91 as I remember seeing a brief clip of it on WWE's YouTube channel awhile back. I wish they would release it already!
Back on topic, I enjoyed the Warrior/Taker feud. You could see the megastar in Taker when not even 6 months into his run they are giving him the 2nd top babyface in the company. The Jake heel turn was also so well done. I remember being invested from week to week with those vignettes of him showing Warrior ways to overcome the dead man.
A Jake/Warrior would've definitely been interesting but I'm glad in the end we got Jake/Mach.

Almost all of the photos I see of Macho and Taker in the ring together Savage is wearing that attire.

savage wrestled taker 3 times in sigles matches. only 1 was on a tv taping. he wrestled vs taker about a dozen times in tag matches. all with duggan vs taker/jake, except once with sid vs taker/jake. so yea, that lone tv taping match needs to come out. surprised the didnt put it on his recent dvd. 1 match with duggan and the match with sid vs taker/jake are also on tv tapings.

They need to do another Randy Savage DVD with that match on it! I agree. Or at the very least put it on the Network under the Hidden Gems section.
