I was just watching the "March to Wrestlemania X" special that aired on 3/13/1994 and came across this fairly unknown interview with Randy Savage conducted by Vince McMahon.
"Macho Man" is famous for his epic promos, but this was really raw and intense in a different way. It is evident that his words were coming from a much deeper place. No crazy, colorful outfits or fun catchphrases. His black street clothes mirror the dark tone of the interview. You can tell that there is a lot of genuine emotion here and the frustration with his position in the company at the time definitely creeps through. This was used to promote his upcoming match with Crush, however, it feels like part of his message is intended for Vince who seemed intent on putting him out to pasture as a main event performer. He acknowledges his recent real-life divorce from Elizabeth while also taking a not so subtle shot at Hogan. It abruptly ends with Savage leaving and telling Vince that the interview is over.
If anything else, this promo is further proof that Savage still had so much to offer to the WWF in 1994. This was from a pretty obscure TV special leading up to the PPV so I wanted to share it for those who have never seen it because I think it is some of his best work which is mighty high praise.

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing this. You can see the frustration for sure, I'd have loved one more Savage title run.

Yes He did...I've said it 100 times....Savage could have a had a cracking programme with Hart, RR & others as an anti New generation heel. if they hadn't played Lawler for Comedy? Savage & Lawler could have been an impressive anti NG heel crew. Also during this programme were it to happen? a World title run would have been great.

I remember this interview. It was way ahead of its time. It definitely had a raw edge to it which was unlike the formula for the WWF in 1994. Watching this interview, I wish they would have went further with this and had Savage turn into this schizophrenic, maniacal heel out to prove his doubters wrong.

Still an awesome and intense interview over 25 years later. Horrible move on Vince's part by just phasing him out during the final legs of his run there.
He easily could've had another WWF Title run or hell even another IC Title run.

I would have loved it if Savage had been involved instead of Luger at WrestleMania. Somehow Savage gets screwed out of the title against Yoko at WrestleMania, Hart still beats Yoko, Savage gets jealous/angry and turns heel to face Bret. The championship match up for Bret we deserved.

passion was evident, that was a great watch. goddam i would have loved a 98 return. Totally. We have a thread about Warrior in the attitude era.. Warrior was a cartoon. Savage works in any era. He really is on the Mount Rushmore (I have 7) of wrestling. Hogan, Austin, Savage, Michaels, Bret, Andre, Rock.

HUGE things for pro wrestling. but then if 4 singles, id prob go with hulk, andre, savage, 4th is a toughy, but prob austin (or flair or warrior or piper)! then aGAIN MAYBE HLUK, ANDRE, AUSTIN, ROCK SOUNDS GOOD. 2 OLD SCHOOL 2 ATTITUDE ERA. (oops caps lock ,lol) how about tag team, 4 guys only warriors & hart foundation for me. 4 teams and its: warriors, harts, steiners, bulldogs

A great promo though the match didn't live up to our expectations. I have a feeling that the match was the reason for Vince deciding to take Randy off of TV competition for good, and just left him in some house show matches from then on including a title match against Bret in Japan. Vince wanted to keep him on commentary as his "Jesse Ventura" and brand ambassador and that was it. If the match worked, perhaps things might have been different?
Randy should've feuded with Lex, that would've been something.

Yeah, it looked like Vince liked using him as an ambassador for the WWF, I remember the old WWF magazines and Savage was always pictured at a parade or Special Olympics or charity event. In a way it's a shame, Savage had a lot left, which was evident by his WCW run. I think Savage could have been great as a old school heel during the new generation era where he feuded with guys like Bret, Shawn, Razor, Diesel, Taker, Lex, etc.

I agree I've always felt that there should've been an old generation posse, that goes after the new. I could see him team up with Piper, Backlund, Volkoff, Lombardi and Bundy during the year.

The guy has a pretty good track record when it comes to high-profile feuds and he put 110% into this one as well acting like a totally unhinged lunatic hell-bent on revenge. Not to knock the guy, but Crush had been around for a few years by this point and was still pretty green. He had difficulty connecting with the fans even though everybody swears he was crazy popular as the "Kona" character. The WrestleMania X match falling short of expectations falls more on Crush in my eyes. That feud with Savage was the highlight of his career. He'd bounce around for the next few years undergoing a bunch of different gimmicks that also never really got over despite a few months during the dying days of WCW as Kronik. I don't mean to bash Crush as he was a decent big man who had a good career, but it would be totally unfair to use their WrestleMania match as the barometer for whether or not Randy could still be a top guy in the WWF.

Geeze Savage was so washed up at that point. Vince was so very smart to ship him out and let him go to WCW.

I'm not sure if Piper wanted to work a full time schedule at the pay rate Vince would've probably given him since he left after WM8? It was merely an attraction relationship thereafter, so he still did wrestle at KOTR94 (despite being a disaster of a match) and WM12. When WCW brought him in they made him a deal that earned him $2.6 million for his whole WCW tenure.
