I was watching montages from 1992 and during one edition of the Event Center leading into WM8, Mean Gene mentions that a special referee was already being discussed for the Hogan/Sid match. This was the first I'd ever heard that. Has this ever been discussed? Were there plans for a special ref, and if so, who do you think it would have been?

the original plan was to have George Foreman be the referee. But he turned down the offer, so then it was going to be Lou Ferrigno (this was back when he was signed to Vince's WBF) and then that fell through also. Then Sgt. Slaughter was discussed, but there ended up not being a special ref.
But yeah, it was planned for both Foreman and Ferrigno before they scrapped it.

I do remember that event center with the ref tease. The whole ''is this Hogan's last match?'' was more than enough to sell the match so I'm glad they scrapped this idea.

Do you think Vince felt that by Wrestlemania IX that the fans would be aching to have Hogan back?? Because I don't think he figured fans would have taken to Bret Hart as hard as they did from Wrestlemania VIII to where Wrestlemania IX he dropped the belt, just to have Hogan win it that night.

Yeah I'm willing to bet with Hogan being his bread maker for so long that he felt after a hiatus after Mania he'd bring em back in 93 to that same fan fare. How wrong Vinnie Mac was.
Bret was the new top babyface (and was over like rover I might add)but for some reason Vince wasted his entire title run by having Hogan stand tall as champ at the end of WM IX.
And to top it off, His decision to make Hogan champ at WM IX bit em in the a$$ in the end as Hogan left that Summer.

If you look at the numbers as soon as WM8 was over, business went down really bad the only thing keeping things afloat was overseas shows. Hulk left with a dent. But by WM9 things changed and Hulk was no longer the guy. It made sense to try to get Hulk back in, perhaps Vince was late on it, plus Hulk's physique changed and having Hart on his side didn't help. Bret's first title run wasn't good at all. Look at the build up to Survivor Series I mean some of his biggest highlights for Bret has being the best champion is beating the likes of Virgil and Skinner. That's how bad it was. Shawn was a good match at SS, but Shawn being a new IC champion back then was just another mid-card heel, not enough to draw on. I liked his match with Razor, but man his run was bad and the numbers I'm sure show it. If Bret had beaten Yoko, things might have been different. EDIT: Also you might notice with Yoko as Champion, in 1993 the same time late 93 vs. late 92, house show numbers went up.
