I visit a lot of forums, and among them the Spawn.com forums. This figure is one of the most recently bashed figures from all of the NECA haters, so instead of listening to biased drivel from McNutswingers, I thought I'd take a look at Mr. Willis in his 7" plastic form for myself.
Sculpt: NECA did a great job here. I've heard commentary about how the figure looks "nothing like Bruce Willis." Those who have said that: Are you blind? Go to an optometrist tomorrow, and get your eyes checked immediately. The facial likeness is spot on, and even better than the admittedly flawed Hartigan figure. Pose wise, what more could you expect, McClane doing an Irish jig? He is on a rooftop, holding a submachine gun, works for me. The only problem I have is the sculpted hand gun in his pants, I personally would have liked it removable if at all possible, but its not that big of a deal.
Paint Application: Here is somewhere I can agree a little bit with some of the criticism. Under the eyes, McClane has these black lines that from close up look like eyeliner. However, to the naked eye, and from a distance, it looks like bags under his eyes. If you're looking for it, it will bother you, if you're not... you should love it. The rest is ace. The blood, sweat and dirt on his wifebeater, his tattoos, the chest and arm hair, even his wedding ring. How's that for detail?
Articulation: If you're looking to re-enact the film with this figure, sorry. Johnny only has five points of articulation, even low for a NECA figure. He is cut at the shoulders, and ankles, and has a ball-jointed head. I am not for or against heavy articulation, as I love figures with and without it, but the style of this figure just works.
Accessories/Packaging: Cult Classics series 3 is packaged in a basic clamshell with black paper inserts featuring photography from the specific film for each figure. The John McClane figure comes with a rooftop base, and his MP5 Submachine gun. The base is exceptionally detailed, featuring rivets on the railing posts, and bullet shells on the floor at John's feet.
General: I am a fan of both NECA, and McFarlane, but right now it is abundantly clear that NECA has a complete stranglehold on the movie figure business. Once an area where McFarlane strived in with their Movie Maniacs line, movie figures have taken a backseat to Todd's other endeavors. NECA has done a marvelous job at not only the product, but giving fans the products they want to see. John McClane was a long awaited character in the action figure world, and God bless the folks at NECA for not only granting our wishes, but executing them extremely well.
Sculpt: 9.5/10
