I wonder what was the reason Vince decided to change the format of Prime Time Wrestling? First it was two people in a studio then for some reason it was changed to a talk show then a round table discussion? I just don’t get it, has anyone stated why or was it all just for giggles?

What were the ratings for them? Maybe Vince wanted to chase a different demographic by portraying his wrestling world as a more sophisticated product, but no format accomplished that.

Had to be a ratings thing with Vince looking to change things up. Even though I still enjoyed the show during it's last legs with the audience/roundtable versions it never came close to the greatness that was the Monsoon/Heenan era from April 86 to early February 91.
I also gotta mention the last episode. They really could've did a better job with it instead of just an hour show with a few clips spiced in here and there. Also Vince didn't need to be there with Gorilla/Bobby.

''And I'm your host Bobby The Brain Heenan''

It PISSED me off when they changed the format of "Prime Time". I always looked forward to watching Gorilla and Bobby every Monday. I have so many VHS tapes with just those two riffing with each other. I never recorded the matches. I HATED the audience gimmick they tried and Vince and his idiotic clothing choices. And the round table thing I didn't care for either. When I was watching and they went to doing "Monday Night Raw" I didn't think it would last at all.
I'm still not over the fact that "Prime Time" was replaced.

Imagine the $$$ WWE could make if they released a Bobby/Gorilla best of set with all their classic moments on it.

Definitely ratings, it had reached an all time low on the USA Network. Compare: week of February 4th, 1990 - 3.9 rating vs. week of February 3rd, 1991 - 2.3 rating and so Vince had to change it.
It had to do with the 1990-91 US recession and the Gulf War that was happening which is the reason for the drop. Plus the whole idea that the Sgt. Slaughter storyline didn't affect anything is total bs because it did. Even The Main Event V (Feb 1st 91) was the lowest rated NBC Wrestling program since they started SNME's in 1985.
Also with the new audience format ratings went up, but then started dropping after the summer with an even worse rating of 1.9 in the last episode of the audience-based show, then Vince came up with the roundtable.
Also WCW Saturday Night was beating up on Prime Time in ratings so makes sense

Just got done revisiting PTW from 1990 few weeks back and I can understand the low ratings considering by late in the year they completely abandoned the feature match. One of the episodes had a Texas Tornado squash match end the show. Totally different from years prior when they would at least have a competitive match to end the episode.

Dang, PTW was doing a 3.9 rating at a time when a lot of the U.S. didn't have cable, that's impressive. Raw and Smackdown would kill for those ratings now, they are routinely getting 2.5's for every Raw and Smackdown. I think the WWE needs to embrace the less is more theory.

Imagine the $$$ WWE could make if they released a Bobby/Gorilla best of set with all their classic moments on it. wwe isn't releasing any more classic best of dvds because they don't make $$$ anymore. I mean I'd buy it, you'd buy it, and a lot of people on this classic board would. The masses wouldn't. It's a shame they are not releasing classic stuff anymore, yet they release current ppvs that you can easily access on the network.
