So I’ve been doing research for the last two days and man this thing is ugly. I believe the media has been covering up a lot of the numbers here in the US to stop public outrage or people from panicking. I first got a grip when all the customers bought up all the food where I work. There was literally nothing. Upper management warned us and said we better start stocking up on food for our family because things are going to get worse... I saw videos of all the people lying in bed in China. It’s interesting that the doctor treating the first patients died, and somehow a reporter who was covering the virus “mysteriously” vanished. Roads were also being closed off too. Now going back to the states... There aren’t many icu beds and the real issue is how fast this thing could spread. Healthcare workers might stop showing up due to being at risk. If I had known this sooner I would of been prepared. Yeah, it’s people like you who causes the people to act like they are. No, you’re not going to run out of fkg food, unless you and everybody else keeps spreading the Sht you are saying food will run out. Quit spreading the lies, nobody knows what’s going on, the media, Or wanna be scientist/specialist like you and grocery store workers. Y’all just need to chill tf out. This virus has been around for months, and yes, it’s probably gonna get worse, but telling people food is gonna be a shortage to run out and stock up is just bs. I did not say there was a shortage of food, so calm down. I said upper management where I WORK said to stock up on food. Does not mean that I went out and bought twenty packs of toilet paper. The part where I mentioned a scientist is a fact. Search up li wenliang. We could have a civilized discussion without the name calling. Thank you and have a nice day sir.

As has probably been mentioned already, 3.4% of people with the illness die. Most of these folks are the elderly, or individuals with previous illnesses. Ultimately the world is on pause for the good of the species' elderly/sick population, and I certainly support it. We can have basketball tournaments, go to libraries, schools, concerts, later. Already 7,000 have died globally (3,000 more than 9/11), and this affects the entire species and every country it lives in, making 9/11 look like child's play. I think it's safe to say that a US President has not have to deal with something of this size since the world wars. There have been other wars, 9/11 itself, other illnesses, but this is humongous. Horrible stock market crash. I hate to play politics, because I'm not a Trump hater, but I'd rather a pro-science Democratic administration inhabit the White House during this than a right wing populist one. I hope Biden wins in 2020 and I hope that the virus hurts/kills as few people as possible. I do hope that a god exists, however (a pro-science god), who can use intelligent humans to bring this to a halt sooner rather than later.

All that said, how amazing it is that a random bat in Wuhan, China (the home city of Jackie Chan's parents, known as the "Chicago of China") could turn the entire world upside down. A respiratory virus mutates and makes it way from bats (who we are more closely related to than I realized) to Homo-sapiens. Insane. With HIV, one of the main target groups were sexually active homosexual men (yes, habitual drug users, hemophiliacs, sexually active heterosexuals and others were susceptible, but I'm talking about your MOST susceptible sociological group) and closing bathhouses helped slow the spread. This disease however affects everyone and can be spread by simply breathing the same air as someone else. Amazing. The Black Death killed 75-200 million and the Spanish Flu killed 17-50 million, hate to read about these things as fascinating as the topic is. With HIV, obviously a disease mutated as well, moving from primates to humans, but we are close cousins there. Who ever thought a bat could bring about such a pandemic? Batman, you have some 'splainin' to do! Maybe he was mad that the country went wild for a movie about his worst enemy a few months ago. As a matter of fact, patient zero for COVID-19 came to be November 17, just like five to six weeks after the release of Joker. Holy pandemic, Batman!

Things should be shut down. Everyone should be in agreement on that. Money being involved however causes a hurdle for a lot of people and businesses. It's funny because WE are the humans and WE are in charge of the money, but we often let money govern over us. Huh? What does a virus with no target have to do with a terrorist attack on America killing thousands of civilians? 3000 people died on 9/11, thousands have died since from side effects of the toxic debris, and thousands more will. There's nothing "child's play" about that. How old are you? Wouldn't it have been easier for pro-science god to just not leave room in his grand design for an outbreak like this in the first place?

Living in the Southwest I think things would be tame since this area heats up quickly this time of the year. However we are a poverty stricken state

In China, the most densely populated country in the world, with over a billion people, only 3k died from this, let’s have some perspective. The majority of those were old, who we know are more vulnerable to these kind of viruses. It’s a strain of flu, stay home, drink water take paracetamol.

I'll never be able to reconcile in my mind the people who preempt the death toll of this thing with "only", e.g. "it's only the elderly" or "it's only those with underlying conditions" or "it's only x amount of people". Like, how cold can you get? Are you really so removed from the human condition that you can so easily scoff at the fact that 7,000+ have died from this thing in an effort to decry the life inconveniences that have been brought about by it? The source is disputed, but there are some really sh*tty people attributed to the quote that says "The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic". Is that really who you want to share sentiments with?
There are several schools of thought regarding what was and wasn't an appropriate response following the attacks on 9/11, but imagine trying to argue that any of it was an overreaction because "only 2,996 people died".

I'm wondering if a heat wave or sudden cold snap would have any effect on the virus.

Sadly, China's image in the history books are more important than reporting facts. Don't believe me... look up their flu related death last year and year before and compare them to what the US reported. You want a real peak at what could happen, watch Italy go through this.

But, they have shown they have closed down the purpose built hospitals so it’s clearly on a huge decline. I can’t quite work out why this is getting the attention it is when it’s fatalities are far lower than seasonal flu or pneumonia.

I can’t quite work out why this is getting the attention it is when it’s fatalities are far lower than seasonal flu or pneumonia. Because it's new, unfamiliar, untested, and unstudied. There's no vaccine widely available yet, and it's able to spread like wildfire because of the vast range of ways it affects people who become infected. There are people coming down with it that are 100% asymptomatic, with no reason to believe they're sick at all, who can pass the virus along just as easily as somebody exhibiting all the symptoms. What we don't know about this new strain yet could fill all of the books we have on what is already known about seasonal flu or pneumonia.
