I am in the middle of watching old Mid Atlantic Wrestling on the WWE Network, and Bob Caudle is just the voice of wrestling to me. The man could call a match and had enthusiasm and passion.
Then there's Gordon Solie....
"He hits a sooo-play and eeehhh ahhh, he kicks out"
That nasal voice, and no passion in his calling of a match. I hate it! I think Gordon Solie is so bad, yet people will say he was the greatest voice to ever call wrestling. Why??
Is it because he called a lot of old matches?? I mean, I rather listen to Caudle, or Lance Russell, or Les Thatcher call a match before Gordon Solie.
Anyone else not like Gordon then?? Or is it just me??

he was alright to me. i liked him most on this show tho (his voice reminds of watching this show on sat morning eating cereal, lol):
Superstars of Wrestling is a nationally syndicated professional wrestling television program that aired throughout the United States from 1986 to 1992.[1] Created and produced by Joe Pedicino, the series broadcast eight hours of wrestling from around the country and was the first to provide national coverage of both the National Wrestling Alliance and international promotions.[2] It was also the earliest U.S. television show to regularly broadcast Japanese puroresu and joshi wrestling as part of the Fuji Television Network's efforts to develop a market in the American television industry.[3]
The series was initially hosted by Pedicino who was later joined by Boni Blackstone[4][5][6] and Gordon Solie.[7][8][9] Pedicino and Solie hosted a popular segment on the show, "Pro Wrestling This Week", which discussed the then current news from the "Big Three" (AWA, NWA and the WWF) as well as regional territories. Bill Apter, editor of Pro Wrestling Illustrated, has also credited Pedicino for considerably raising his profile among wrestling fans due to his weekly segment.[10][11] The magazine's yearly awards ceremony was shown on Superstars of Wrestling in 1987 and 1988.[12]

I didn't mind Solie.Eveytime I think of him I think of Starrcade 83 and Flair/Race for the belt.Perfect old school play-by-play guy for his era.
On the topic of Bob Caudle, He was always underrated in my book.Loved pretty much his entire run in the booth with guys like Solie,JR,Mantell etc. He never gets recognition he deserves IMO.

The way I saw Gordon Solie was a lot like Lord Alfred Hayes, as I grew up in the early 90s. Both were the "older" extra guy for their promotion. To me the main commentators were the slightly younger ones. I think Gordon fits a certain time, as someone mentioned but might not really be able to transcend his time period like most commentators probably could. A Gorilla or Bobby or Jesse or even Jim Ross could but not Gordon. He's like a classic movie star of a certain era. If they did a show today they could really only be an extra but couldn't hold down the show themselves.

He was a legend who brought credibility to everything he called. He is the single most legitimate sports broadcaster of his generation and was highly valued by every promotion he worked with and every television station that he had a chance to work with respected him. His style was matter of fact and focused on bringing dignity to the SPORT. Also it provided a great contrast to the wild and wooly wrestlers he was often interviewing.

*nasal voice* "Tommy Rich hits him with a sup-lay eehhh aahhh" No sorry, that isn't good stuff. He is so over rated that it's not even funny. Was Gordon Solie okay?? Sure. But to say he was the greatest is just ridiculous.

This is coming from a guy who thinks Diesel is the greatest wwe champion ever and his favorite wrestler is No Way Jose.

If they did a show today they could really only be an extra but couldn't hold down the show themselves. I think this is a good way to sum up Solie. He was a produce really of his time, and place. He fit for that time period for more southern wrestling, had he been an announcer in the McMahon territory of the Northeast, I don't see him being able to fit. I became a fan as well in the very early 90s, mainly WWF, so I was a fan of that style, with Monsoon and Ventura, and then Monsoon and Heenan, the over the topness heel clashing with the straight man face, but I still could respect Solie's style in that he really called wrestling like it was a sport. While I don't personally consider him the best announcer ever, I've got no problem with others seeing him as that, and I would still put him on the list of one of the greats. I mean, he would have inspired future announcers if he was awful.

Just lock this PJ apparently me saying I don't like how Solie talks and that I find him overrated is reason to think I am clearly wrong in my thinking. I rather you just lock it then have others come down on me for not liking the "greatest announcer ever."

But can’t everyone just agree to keep things civil regardless of what everyone opinions are? I mean we aren’t going to agree on everything, but can’t everyone just agree to keep everything respectful?

I would like to see it remain open, but I didn't attack anyone on here. I got attacked though. All I said is that I found Solie to have a nasal voice and was very basic in how he did commentary. But apparently me being a Diesel fan is needed to be brought up and that I am a jerk as well?? I get that people like Solie, I just wanted to see who didn't like him. But for people to say he is the greatest ever?? I just will never understand that.

I never cared for Solie but I assumed it was because I was more a WWF kid and Solie was before my time. Either way he didn't appeal to me.

Jim Ross himself thinks Solie is the GOAT when it comes to announcers.
