WCW Saturday NightTony Schiavone and Jesse Ventura welcome us to the show, and they're kicking off with highlights from the first round of the WCW World Television Title Tournament that kicked off this weekend (see B-Show results below), with the announcement that the tournament will wrap up at SuperBrawl, two weeks from tomorrow night! The quarter finals will take place next week across WCW programming, with the semi-finals taking place two weeks from tonight! We've got two big first round matches tonight, and we're going to the ring for the first one right now! WCW World Television Title Tournament, First Round: Johnny B. Badd defeats Maxx PayneThis was a hot way to start the show, as the evil grunge rocker Maxx Payne wanted to add some gold to drape around the neck of his guitar, Norma Jean. He was aggressive with Johnny, but the flamboyant "Prettiest Man in WCW" used his speed and agility to his advantage. Payne ended up taking advantage and locking on his armbar, the Payne Killer, but not only did Badd get to the ropes, but he was able to use Payne's momentum against him, and actually did a backflip off the ropes, doing an impromptu Moonsault onto Payne to get the win and move on the tournament! As Badd celebrated his win, Payne didn't take it very well, smashing his guitar on the arm of Badd! He then locks on the Payne Killer yet again, but Badd's not getting out of it this time! Down to the ring comes some of the WCW wrestlers and officials to try to break this up. Badd is officially moving on in the tournament, but will he be able to wrestle? The "White Castle of Fear" hype mini-movie plays to hype SuperBrawl III, just a few weeks away! The Heavenly Bodies defeat Joey Maggs and the Cole Twins. The Bodies were in high praise, showing off their newly won Smoky Mountain Wrestling Tag Team Titles, and Cornette cut a promo into the camera promising that the Rock 'n Roll Express will NEVER get another title shot! They make relatively quick work of the Cole Twins and Jumpin' Joey, with Bobby Eaton putting Joey away after an Alabama Jam. WCW World Television Title Tournament, First Round: Paul Orndorff defeates Erik Watts. This match had a large age gap, as the wily veteran Orndorff took on Watts, the former Louisville Cardinal second generation star who is just making a name for himself in this industry. Watts definitely gave it the ole college try here, no pun intended, but Mr. Wonderful seemed to have an answer for everything he threw at him. Orndorff's patented piledriver guaranteed that he see the next round of the TV Title Tournament! From out of the crowd, Cactus Jack slid into the ring, and started brawling with Orndorff! Referees on the scene were able to seperate them fairly quickly, perhaps being more attentive after what happened earlier tonight with Payne and Johnny B. Badd. We go to the WCW SuperBrawl Control Center, with Eric Bischoff! He goes over the three announced matches so far, but then says he can confirm two more. The Unified World Tag Team Champions, Ricky Steamboat and Shane Douglas will be defending their titles against the number one contenders... The Hollywood Blonds. The second match that can be confirmed tonight is as of now a non-title match. The Heavenly Bodies will face the Rock 'n Roll Express. Despite Jim Cornette earlier declaring that the Express will never get another Smoky Mountain Wrestling tag team title shot, WCW and SMW officials are still negotiating to determine if the SMW Tag Team Titles will be on the line. More will be announced next week! And don't miss SuperBrawl III, live on pay per view! Chris Benoit defeats Marcus Alexander Bagwell. This was a solid match showing two of WCW's future stars. They brought up WCW's Light Heavyweight Title Tournament which will be happening in the coming months, mentioning that right now, Bagwell is one pound under the 235 pound weight limit. They worked well together, showed a lot of chemistry, but the Canadian showed a little mean streak when it mattered, and hit the Tiger Suplex to get the win. A video package aired of the Great Muta, showing him winning the NWA World Title. He will be in action when we come back! The Great Muta defeats Rip RogersThe cagey veteran Rogers was no match for the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, and he put him away with the Moonsault in short order. A pre-taped video of Sting plays, talking about tonight's main event. He's excited! He's facing Brian Pillman for the first time ever! You know, him and Brian used to be friends. They went to war together! But he doesn't know who Brian's been listening to, and he doesn't get his new friendship with Stunning Steve. The only thing he knows is that tonight, he's going to try to beat some sense into an old friend! Sting defeats Brian Pillman by disqualification. This was a great match! Brian went loose here, even letting some of his old moves come out of storage, including a big Air Pillman that got a two count! Sting went for a Gorilla Press slam, but Pillman was able to slip out of it, counter that with a roll up that almost got a three! Sting took control, and looked like he was going to get the win, going for the Stinger Splash in the corner, but Stunning Steve pulled Pillman out of the way, causing the referee to ring the bell. The Blonds bailed on the fired up Stinger. After the match, Vader came out and stared Sting down to end the show. They briefly announced what was happening next week, including Robbie V. taking on Paul Orndorff in the World Television Title Tournament and in our main event, The Hollywood Blonds and Vader will face Ricky Steamboat, Shane Douglas, and Sting! B-Shows

The Rock 'n Roll Express hype their match at SuperBrawl with the Heavenly Bodies, saying regardless of whether the titles are on the line, they will beat the Bodies! The Rock 'n Roll Express defeat Brad Anderson and Mustapha Saed. Scotty Flamingo defeats Marcus Alexander Bagwell to advance in the WCW World Television Title Tournament.

Welcome back! I see we're in a transitional period, coming up on the return of Ric Flair presumably. I see a lot of wheels in motion, particularly the preparation for the vacant WCW World Television Championship tournament. I spy Scotty Flamingo quietly rising through the ranks of that, as well as the Z-Man! Always thought Tom Zenk was very underrated. Not a great deal to go off of just yet, but we've got a solid roster that's a good base to work with, and I see the Tazmaniac also worked the weekend shows. Curious to see what is in store for him.

- Bill Watts is now officially out of power. There had been a lot of going back and forth this week after an old Pro Wrestling Torch interview he did where he made some very distasteful comments about the black and gay communities was shared with Turner executives, including Hank Aaron. He's still under contract but no longer has any say in the company's direction or television going forward. As of now, a booking committee will be taking his place. - As of now, Ric Flair has not signed with the company. He requested his WWF release and has been told that he'll receive it, but cannot officially negotiate with WCW until that happens. If he is signed before SuperBrawl, he will likely appear then. That being said, Arn Anderson was pulled off TV this week, where he was supposed to continue his angle with Erik Watts despite being injured, because they feel like Flair will come back as a babyface, and they don't want Arn on TV playing heel before this happens. - On a similar note, there has been an impasse in negotiations with Davey Boy Smith. They are still hopeful he will come in, but as of now, he and WCW are far apart on money. With Watts gone, Watt's "$1000/night" deal will no longer be the benchmark. - A lot of the "Watts guys" on the roster are probably not going to be featured very much going forward. This includes his son Erik, The Barbarian, Bill Irwin, Tony Atlas, and Iceman King Parsons. They are not being released, but will be primarily putting over other talent until their contracts expire. - The build for SuperBrawl feels rushed, because they have several matches involving people who are still in the World TV Title Tournament. The decision was made to fast track that tournament because they really want to get behind someone to win it, and because with the US Title Tournament happening in the last couple of months and them still needing to run one for the Light Heavyweight Title tournament, they did not want to burn the audience out on tournaments. - The Light Heavyweight division was considered dead a few months ago, but they want to build the division around Too Cold Scorpio, who is the most exciting flying wrestler they feel like has come around in years. They will likely be bringing in some new talent to help round out the division. Two names to keep in mind are Jerry Lynn and the Lightning Kid, who really had some great stuff in the GWF a couple of years ago. Cactus Jack (Mick Foley) has been pushing for them to get a look. - On talent coming in, there's been some word they want to bring in younger talent to really shape up the midcard. - Someone who's been listening to WCW Radio on WSB Radio in Atlanta on Sundays has noticed how well Vinnie Vegas (Kevin Nash) has been doing on the show. He comes across incredibly charismatic over the air. He's expected to be allowed to show that on TV, with the question being if he'll get a makeover, or if they think the Vinnie Vegas character can work higher than an undercard act.

WCW Saturday NightTony Schiavone and Jesse Ventura welcome us to the show and show the two World Television Title Tournament matches from this weekend. We have another big quarterfinal match tonight. There will also be some big SuperBrawl announcements tonight! And don't forget about our huge six man tag team main event, as Sting teams with the Unified World Tag Team Champions, Ricky Stemaboat and Shane Douglas to face the WCW World Heavyweight Champion Big Van Vader and the Hollywood Blonds! Let's get to Gary Michael Capetta and the first match! WCW World Television Title Tournament, Quarter Finals: Robbie V. defeats Paul OrndorffAlbeit, you can give the assist to Cactus Jack, but what a major, major upset! Robbie used his speed and was doing well evading the veteran, but Cactus Jack came down to ringside! This took Orndorff's focus away from him. It allowed Robbie V to hit a big spin kick, then a unique second rope split legged moonsault to get the huge upset win and advance to next week's semi-finals! It will be Z-Man vs. Michael "PS" Hayes and Robbie V against the winner of Scotty Flamingo vs. Brad Armstrong, tomorrow night on the Main Event! The match might be over, but Jack vs. Orndorff are not! They're brawling all over the ringside area, and referees have to break them up! We go back to Tony and Jesse, where they have some breaking news. Just added to the SuperBrawl III card will be... Cactus Jack vs. Paul Orndorff in a Falls Count Anywhere match! The WCW Executive Committee have decided that the ring is too small to contain this issue! The same video that played this morning on Worldwide plays to hype Scott Norton. He'll be in action... next! Scott Norton defeats Joey Maggs.Norton kind of destroyed Jumpin' Joey here, hitting a few of his most impressive power moves, then finishing him off with a big shoulder breaker! Jim Cornette comes out with the Heavenly Bodies. Tony brings up news that the Bodies WILL be defending the Smoky Mountain Wrestling Tag Team Titles against the Rock 'n Roll Express at SuperBrawl! Tony asks why last week, Cornette said they'd never get another shot, but now they are? Cornette says Tony must be the worst gambler in the world! Did you really think that the Bodies can't beat the Rock 'n Rolls AGAIN? Of course they can! But to give something, like a title shot, they had to get something in return from the WCW Championship Committee... like Bobby Eaton, the best technical wrestler in WCW history... getting a title shot of his own. Dustin Rhodes needed someone to defend the United States Title against, and Bobby Eaton has a title to take away from Dustin Rhodes at SuperBrawl III! The Heavenly Bodies (Lane and Prichard) defeat Marcus Alexander Bagwell and Brad Armstrong. This was a solid match, and Bagwell and Armstrong looked pretty good, but with Cornette and Eaton on the outside, this basically became a four-on-two match, and the numbers advantage was just too much to stand, with Lane putting away Bagwell after a Veg-o-matic. The "White Castle of Fear" hype mini-movie plays to hype SuperBrawl III, one week from tomorrow night! We go to the WCW SuperBrawl Control Center, with Eric Bischoff! He goes over the announced matches so far. The White Castle of Fear Strap Match, the NWA World Heavyweight Title match, the WCW World Tag Team Title match, the finals of the WCW World Television Title Tournament! He then talks about the changes we've seen even just so far tonight! Dustin Rhodes will be defending the WCW United States Title against "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton of the Heavenly Bodies! The previously announced Heavenly Bodies - Rock 'n Roll Express match WILL be for the Smoky Mountain Wrestling Tag Team Titles! Cactus Jack taking on Paul Orndorff in a Falls Count Anywhere match! And we have one more match we can confirm for this, now eight days away... Johnny B. Badd will be looking for revenge when he faces Maxx Payne! The attack from last week is shown, and we go to pre-taped comments by Johnny B. Badd. Where he usually cares about being the prettiest man in WCW, he's not going to care about being pretty when he takes on that big ole ugly bear Maxx Payne! He will damage his pretty face to make sure that Payne gets worse! Tex Slazenger and Shanghai Pierce defeat The Cole Twins. The rookie identical twins showed a lot of spirit but the two cagey "Texicans" as Jesse insisted on calling them took advantage of some of that inexperience to isolate Kent and get the win. Johnny Gunn defeats the Barbarian.
The young heartthrob Gunn hasn't had the best of luck in recent weeks in WCW, but he picked up a big win here by beating someone who was in World Title contention just a few months ago in the Barbarian! He hit a big drop kick off the top rope to get the win! Barry Windham is asked to come out. He's happy to talk about his NWA World Heavyweight Title match next week against Muta at SuperBrawl. But he is asked about the rumor that Ric Flair is coming home to WCW, and he flips out. That he never needed the Four Horsemen, that he was better now than he ever was when he was in the Horsemen. And he'll have the NWA World Heavyweight Title wrapped around his waist. Flair might come, he might not, but if he does, he had better look at another title than the NWA World Heavyweight Title, because it will be around the waist of Barry Windham! Too Cold Scorpio defeats the Gambler.
A quick and easy win for the high flying Too Cold! Big Van Vader and the Hollywood Blonds defeat Sting, Ricky Steamboat and Shane Douglas. This was a really fun six man tag and got a lot of time, too. The Blonds and Vader used every shortcut, dirty trick, cheap tactic in the book. After some big near falls and Sting hits the guardrail, he's down, which allows a three-on-two. Vader hits the Vader Bomb on Shane Douglas and the World Champion and the Hollywood Blonds get the win! B-Shows
WCW Pro (Friday Night)Cactus Jack defeats Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker The White Castle of Fear mini-movie played. The Tazmaniac defeats Erik Watts. A highlight video of Chris Benoit wrestling Eddy Guerrero in Japan was shown. Guerrero will be coming to WCW in the coming weeks. Barry Windham defeats Steve Regal. WCW Power Hour (Saturday Morning)Michael Hayes defeats Johnny B. Badd to advance in the WCW World Television Title Tournament. Badd was favoring his arm after the attack by Maxx Payne last week on WCWSN. In this week's WCW Flashback, the World Television Title match between Tully Blanchard and Dusty Rhodes from Pro in 1987 was shown. The White Castle of Fear mini-movie played. The Rock 'n Roll Express and Marcus Alexander Bagwell defeat Tex Slazenger, Shanghai Pierce, and Bill Irwin. WCW Worldwide (Saturday Morning)Z-Man defeats Tony Atlas to advance in the WCW World Television Title Tournament. The White Castle of Fear mini-movie played. Robbie V. and Jerry Lynn defeat the Wrecking Crew. This was Jerry Lynn's WCW debut. A video played showing highlights of Scott Norton. He'll be making his debut tonight on WCW Saturday Night! The Heavenly Bodies (Eaton and Lane) defeat The Cole Twins. This was Eaton and Lane's first tag team match together on WCW TV in over two years. A video was shown for SuperBrawl. They advertised a night that the wrestling world won't forget, and said the prodigal son was coming home! WCW Main Event (Sunday Evening)Scotty Flamingo defeats Brad Armstrong to advance in the WCW World Television Title Tournament. Erik Watts defeats Denny Kass. Big Van Vader defeats Van Hammer. A video played showing highlights of a new signee to WCW, The Patriot! Michael Hayes said next week he was going to beat Z-Man and go on to SuperBrawl to win the WCW World Television Title! Steve Regal defeats Bill Irwin.

- The plan is to nail down the contract with Ric Flair this week. He is officially free to sign, and WCW would not mention him if they were not confident he would be putting pen to paper this week. It would be just about the most WCW thing ever if they started teasing him for SuperBrawl and he didn't show up, though. - There's been some talk about rushing too many people on TV, but they know how thin their midcard is. The word that was described to me is "Do you really want Bagwell and Erik Watts wrestling 4 times a weekend? We have TV time to fill." - Eddie Guerrero will be finishing up his commitments in Mexico and Japan before coming in. There's also been talk about putting him in a gimmick before he does. - In addition to Guerrero, Scott Norton, the Patriot and Jerry Lynn, WCW has also signed Dan Kroffat and Doug Furnas, who have been teaming in Japan. Furnas was around in 1989 doing a "World's Strongest Man" gimmick (he owns a number of power lifting records). Kroffat (Phil Lafon) has really only worked All Japan after starting in Stampede in the 1980s. They are coming in as a team. Al Snow has also been signed, a talented youngster from the midwest that doesn't have a lot of charisma. He might get a gimmick. Wayne Shamrock, who wrestled in the US as Vince Torelli, is finishing up his dates in Japan. They've also brought in the Lightning Kid (Shawn Waltman), who was trained by Eddie Sharkey and made some waves in the GWF a couple of years ago. He's small, even for a lightweight, but has a lot of personality. - Chris Adams has also been asking for a shot, and he might be getting one, maybe in a tag team. - The Smoky Mountain situation was weird. Bill Watts himself had been the point-man for that relationship, and it actually looked like the SuperBrawl match might be in danger because of that... but the fences have been mended, the match will happen with the likelyhood that both the Heavenly Bodies and the Rock 'n Roll Express might stay after the PPV. There's also been talk about sending some of the WCW undercard talents that they feel might be a little green to Smoky Mountain, to get more experience working in front of a live crowd. The Cole Twins were the big name discussed. - WCW has released it's upcoming PPV/Special Event schedule. March will have a Clash of the Champions. April will have the BattleBowl PPV. They love the concept, but with it being the 10th anniversary of Starrcade, they really want to push that show, so it will no longer take place during Starrcade. May will have a new PPV called "Slamboree". It's said to be a celebration of wrestling history, and they might be bringing in some older talent to work special matches for the show. Beach Blast returns in June. The Great American Bash will return for it's 6th consecutive PPV in July. August will have a Clash of the Champions. WrestleWar will be in September. Halloween Havoc will return in October. November will have a Clash of the Champions. December will see the 10th anniversary of Starrcade.

I'm expecting we'll ease into the main flow of the diary following SuperBrawl. It's not a bad idea to introduce a diary mid-build, if anything purely to give the reader a peek at what to expect from the diary. It makes for some exposition anyway. We're seeing a few moving parts at play here, particularly with the idea that Bill Watts is now out of power. That said I'm hoping we see the Barbarian remain, I always thought he was a solid hand even in the 1990s. I hope that we see the Heavenly Bodies remain involved with the company in 1993. I always thought the presence of an indie promotion like SMW would make WCW appear even more like a conglomerate. Also surprising to see rookie Robbie V score a big victory over Paul Orndorff in the WCW World Television Championship tournament, wondering how high his ceiling is at this stage of his career. SuperBrawl looks like a great card on paper, all building towards the White Castle of Fear match, which if I recall was a heck of a match in real life.
Looking forward to seeing where we go from there.
