The guy was getting a solid push with a main event championship match against Bret at the Royal Rumble that year. Two months later, he is involved in a throwaway match with Bob Backlund that did nothing for neither guy.
Razor deserved a more meaningful match at WM IX, but it seems like options were limited. Can we book a more meaningful match for Razor?

Shame Owen Hart was injured during this time. Him coming back in time for Mania and wanting revenge for the attack in January would've told a good story.
If Savage didn't do commentary on this show, then he could've also been a good option considering their history.

I would have to go with the same thing The Brain said, Macho would have been my first choice since they started and feud in the fall of 1992 and never really finished it. After that, the idea of Owen coming back after being attacked by Razor makes the most sense. Also, had Perfect not been in a match with Luger, he would have been a solid option since they had history and like Savage, had a feud started in the fall that never went anywhere.

If Owen was healthy, or had Savage wrestled or even had Earthquake remained with the company at the time, all three men would have been more suited to wrestle Razor than Bob Backlund was.

Speaking of Quake, Typhoon was still with the company for a little while longer at that point so he's another one.

On a side note, I remember watching a shoot interview with Razor years back and he talked about this match. He was supposed to beat Backlund with the Razor's edge but Backlund refused to take the finished because he didn't think the bump was safe. So Razor said that Vince told him to beat him with a small package. I figure I would post this just incase anyone was wondering why Razor didn't win with his finishing move.

prob savage or maybe start a fued with rick martel or something! That would have been a good choice, however, I have heard that starting in 1990, Martel would usually take off the middle part of the year (March - August) to work on his real estate business - with the exception of 1992. 1990, left after WM6 didn't return until September to start a feud with Jake. 1991, left after WM7 didn't return until December 1991. 1993, left in the spring and didn't return until September when he and Razor started feuding for the IC title. 1994, left after WM10 and didn't return until January of 1995 for an appearance in the 1995 Royal Rumble match, he did not return to the WWF after this. He did make some appearance's in May - July 1994 as a sub for Shawn Michaels who was out with an injury. Side note: I was watching a shoot interview of his a year or so ago and he talked about coming back to the WWF in 1997/98. He was going to be in a tag team with the guy who played the Jackyl character at that time, however they were going to be called the model's. But Martel didn't like the deal he got from the WWF so he signed for a short time with WCW in 1998.

I know Backlund had a great showing when he returned for the Rumble match in January, but that clean-cut "Opie" character was never going to get over in the early 90s WWF. Razor should have won more decisively as his stock was clearly on the rise. To their credit, they did a total 180° with Backlund's gimmick the following year with him portraying a schizophrenic maniac. That was entertaining stuff!

Sometimes when I think about his change in character it really shocks me but he 25+ years more fame out of playing it than if he had been the guy he was in 1992/1993. Good for him. I can't think of very many people Razor could beat based on the roster at the time. Having lost to Bret I think Owen would have been a step down. Facing Kamala would be worthless and silly. The only legit might be Bossman if he can do the Razor's Edge. Bossman really went downhill after late 1992 but still a big time fan favorite. Luckily for Scott Hall his big break would come just s few months later.

He also took off June 1988 to late 88 or early 89 although I heard that was something to do with his wife falling ill but the timeline certainly matches his 1990s take offs. It's funny that he was actually booked for matches at Summerslam 1990 and 1993 and wound up being replaced. I wonder why WWF would even promote him knowing he would most likely not be available. Maybe it was just as a place holder until they could get someone else worth while.

The disrespect for Mr. Backlund in this thread is heart breaking. But I digress..
I'm pretty sure Razor was given Backlund because the roster was so thin. There wasn't much else they can do. As others have pointed out, Savage was being forced into a non wrestling role at the time.
