So it’s been reported that when Christian originally came back to the WWE that he was to be booked as the one who was messing with Jeff Hardy for months and attack him at the 2009 royal rumble. However, when this was leaked, Vince changed plans, put Matt in his place, and Christian was made the leader of the ECW brand.
But what if plans went as originally planned? I’ve heard people say that Christian would have simply been Edge’s lackey, but I don’t see it that way. If Christian attacks Edge, maybe he gets the 1v1 match with Jeff at WM25 rather than being in MITB? Maybe he’s involved in the world title scene with Jeff, Edge, and Punk on Smackdown?
Knowing how Vince viewed Christian, there’s a strong chance he would have been booked as Edge’s lackey, but maybe not if he proved himself in a high profile feud with the #2 merch seller in the company (possibly #1 but the WWE won’t confirm that).
Anyone think he was better off as how things went, or do you think his career would be looked at differently had he been the one to attack Jeff?

It is possible that was the initial idea. But saving Christian to come out in ECW and be the face of that brand actually saved Christian's second WWE run from being a failure.
If he had come back behind attacking Jeff, he and Edge vs. Hardy Boyz would have been a feud, with Edge vs. Jeff as the main point of that feud and Christian and Matt seen secondary. With Matt attacking Jeff, we got a heel Matt Hardy - who just helped a guy he freaking hated over what happened years earlier with Lita - and he attacked his own brother out of all people! Just too bad the WWE writing team botched that feud between the brothers.
As for Christian, he got to be a World Champion in a brand for the better part of 2009. Thus when ECW died and he came to Smackdown and Raw, he was easily put into the IC Title picture and even got two World Title reigns on Smackdown. I think the way it went down was the best way, no doubt.

Christian winning the ECW title and becoming the face of the brand was the perfect road they took him.
Had he been involved in the Edge, Hardy feud he most likely would've been a third wheel and played second fiddle to Edge.
Don't get me wrong an Edge and Christian reunion would've been cool and we may have seen them face The Hardyz in a tag match at some point, but in ECW he was able to be his own person, win the belt and defend it in feuds.

I think the best role for him was to carry ECW in 2009, i just wish they didn't screw up his return so bad... Comes out to a dead crowd and Todd Grisham's commentary of "It's... It's Christian", followed by the Minitron glitching out.
Would have rather them just enter him into the Royal Rumble, then debut him on the following episode of ECW. That way he at least would have got a good pop and good commentary to back it up.
Alternately, if he did return to attack Jeff & help Edge, they probably would have done E&C vs The Hardyz at WrestleMania.
Assuming The Hardyz won, it would lead to dissension between Edge & Christian, Edge turning on Christian (Christian face turn), then Christian going to ECW in the draft and carrying the brand from there.

I think it would of worked if it was portioned right. Christian would have to be seen as equal to Edge. In helping his friend ridding them of they're mutual greatest annoyance. Have Christian take both men out. Build up to Edge facing Christian facing Edge for the title at Mania and how it's been they're dream since childhood. Have contract signing the Hardy Boyz return and crash. Have Hardy get the title at Mania in the Tag Match, have the feud continue on with Edge and Christian's relationship boiling. Have Matt Hardy boil into heel slowly as he feels hes the reason Jeff got the title. Then you can burn into Matt's Heel turn, Christian and Edge go at for the title or move Christian to ECW after the Draft. I think it could of worked.
