Blue bar was definitely a Vince thing to differentiate himself from NWA. Heard that loads of times. Did WCW ever use the big bar cage when Herd was trying to mimick Vince
The steel cage match with Sting/Flair vs. Funk/Muta at Hallowee Havoc 89 and Flair vs. Luger at Capital Combat 90 comes to mind for WWE style cage.
I ask because as a kid from 89-91 my exposure to WCW was limited...It was basically through the odd late night viewing I managed to tape on TV here or through PWI Magazine. I always noted that they used the mesh cage in WCW....BUT when the WCW ring by Galoob came out they had the big bar setup. I remember it being one of THE first things I wondered about after I 1st seen the toy advert for it.

The funny thing is though is that the cage matches were grey big bars. The cage that got made for Galoob toys was clearly painted blue to confuse parents or kids into thinking they were getting the same blue cage for the WWF figures.

Oh maybe it was red. But for some reason I remember it being blue, unless that is just a random distorted memory I have from my youth now?? Could be that ha ha ha

For some reason my memory wants to say blue cage, red ring with blue ropes. I don't know why?? Memories are weird at times. Makes me wonder if half the stuff I remember from my childhood actually happened that way now or if I just created it in my head Ha ha ha

Bret vs Owen at Summerslam 94 (I would have loved Owen to have won the belt here, this was his best year in the WWF I think).
Hulk Hogan vs King Kong Bundy at Wrestlemania 2.
HHH vs Mankind at Summerslam 97.
These are just a few, but I personally miss the big blue bars variation of the cage. I even liked the black variant, which was used briefly in the late 90's. But the blue cage just has that classic feel to it.

The main thing for me was the difference from the cage matches in other territories. Both in appearence as it looked different from all the other cages, to the style of the matches as these really emphasized escaping the cage as a spectacle whereas traditional territories focused on using the cage to settle blood feuds and championship disputes. Only in WWF could that style of cage match work and they really made it work.
The one downside you could argue for is that modern cage matches put too much emphasis on just escaping through the door. WWE could benefit from eliminating the escape rule altogether because too many suckers milk the door too much in their matches. It looks absrud and dilutes the crowd investment every time they do it. If they don't have every reason to stay in the cage and Hoss Fight, or if you can't think of enough ways to keep the heel from just bolting when the door is near, don't freaking book it!

WWE should still use the big blue steel cage.

As we speak I’m watching Bret Hart vs Isaac Yankem from 10/16/95 Raw. Maybe Glen Jacobs’ best match in that gimmick.

The big blue steel cage is to WWE like the War Games steel cage was to NWA and WCW.

WWE should still use the big blue steel cage. I don't know if they need to use it all the time but they could definitely use it every now and then for a heated feud. Really sell that the bars are steel and ramming into them hurts like hell which would make it different than the chain link fence for the other cages.

Many old school wrestling fans don't like the blue bar cage (I remember it being called "the WWF playpen" on early 90s wrestling message boards), but I liked how it enabled bigger guys to climb and do spots that they might have been hesitant to do with a mesh cage. I did not, and still don't, like the "escape the cage" finish, but the visuals of the blue bar cage are quite memorable.

Does anyone know why it was used in this match;
Edge vs. Christian from Rebellion 2001
Rather than the grey mesh cage that had already been used? Cheaper to ship it or?

Watch the finish and you'll get your answer. While I have not been able to conform this but I heard the Barred Cage was last used at SmackDown house shows in the Spring & Summer of 2002. The switch between the barred and chain link fence was merely a Vince McMahon move. McMahon finally realized why guys hated the barred cage after his match with Steve Austin at St. Valentines Day Massacre: In Your House. Mind you, by this point, they were using the chain link fence on the house show circuit. The barred cage had no give at all. It is the primary reason why guys were not fond of the cage.
