The big blue cage was the best one.

What I loved about the classic cage was that it looked like a cage. The modern ones are basically just 4 walls of bouncy mesh surrounding the ring. Not only that but I'm pretty sure the classic cage would've been easier to climb too since the wrestlers could fit their feet into the square panels.
Something I also liked about the blue cage was that their was no pinfall, just escape to win which is how cage matches should be.

I'm still willing to bet they have a cage match between the two in their massive vault that was filmed.

We had MSG shows air on MSG every two weeks or at least one every month back in the 80’s/90’s. But I honestly don’t remember Savage vs Jake in one, but looking at that pic and seeing Savage in the tights means it probably was after March ‘90 which was when my father passed and I stopped watching those MSG shows. So it could have aired and I just missed it.

I always loved a Hulk Hogan vs. Big Boss Man match from 3/18/89 at MSG. Later that same day they had pretty much the same match at Boston Garden only with a regular non-big blue cage. The matches were pretty much the prototype for what they would later do on SNME.

The first time I saw it, I immediately said "They made the cage like that because Hogan can't scale a regular cage! They're making it easy for him! It's like a damn ladder!" Then my brother hit me with a pillow & told me to shut up. It looks as good as a chain link, and gives the impression that it would hurt more if you smashed into it.

I tried to find fan cam footage through the years but to no avail.
That pic you posted though does look like they filmed one during a TV taping so it makes me wonder if at least one match is stored away in their archives collecting dust.

Mankind/Hunter & Bret/Owen were my favourites, but also McMahon/Austin although it wasn't really a traditional cage match but still hella fun.

I wonder if wrestlers had any say in what style of cage match they wanted to use??
It just seems weird that at times you would see the big blue cage and then other times the grey mesh cage.
I do remember hearing the reason why the blue cage happened was for Hogan vs. Bundy, because it made it easier for both men to climb the cage. But it seems odd that at house shows they'd go back to the grey mesh, and then eventually you have the big blue cage again.

Blue bar was definitely a Vince thing to differentiate himself from NWA. Heard that loads of times.
Did WCW ever use the big bar cage when Herd was trying to mimick Vince

The steel cage match with Sting/Flair vs. Funk/Muta at Hallowee Havoc 89 and Flair vs. Luger at Capital Combat 90 comes to mind for WWE style cage.

I have a Roddy Piper vs Ric Flair cage match on VHS that is from a fan-cam. I thought it was pretty cool. This is the same footage but mine is a lot clearer.

Even if the quality is rough, I love seeing footage like this.
