Randy posted this in the main thread, but I thought it raised a good question. Cody applied to trademark his own name literally the day he could. I don't know much about trademark law in terms of how long they take to get approved, but...
When would you debut the Rhodes name if you're Cody? They plan for the final of the tnt tournament at Don iirc. Assuming that's the case, I think he has two cool options. Either Lance beats him and he cuts a promo about being done trying to avoid just being another Rhodes and embracing it instead, or he beats lance and they use his last name as they announce him the winner (but not in the intro). Either way it would make me really wish there was a crowd the response would be insane.

When they go back to having shows with a live audience, soon hopefully.

I like the idea of him doing it at DoN. If he waited until there were a full crowd, it might be 2021.

I won’t be surprised if he does use it officially once it’s his, but he also has previously stated why he still uses just “Cody.” Technically he could’ve been using “Cody Rhodes” since October, but it’s also possible if he did that WWE would’ve re-filed the trademark. So, we’ll see what happens, but I won’t be surprised either way if he uses it or not. People call him “Cody Rhodes” all the time anyway, it’s just his ring name is “Cody”, so personally I don’t see it as a necessary thing to do.

I still find it funny that Cody's theme says "you took my dreams but not my name"....and WWE literally took his name.

He has to wait until he has a full crowd. Dusty would roll in his grave if he found out Cody had been through all this and didn't make the most of it to get a huge pop and make the people believe in him even more.

It's really a shame that any company would trademark Rhodes name and Dusty's son wouldn't be able to use it. But it just shows how petty and nasty Vince McMahon can be. Dusty's fame came from other promotions and not just WWF. Cody has a lot more going for him legacy wise and contact wise to be able to put on an amazing promotion for years to come so I hope, even if he can't scare WWE the way 1990s WCW did, that he gives them a pretty good run for the money. His recent legends of Memphis reunion was pretty cool because you know it came from the respect for these wrestlers and not "what can they do for me?" to put over the latest storyline.

Glad he'll finally be able to use it assuming all goes according to plan. I did find it kind of petty that WWE didn't lift the trademark but at the same time business-wise, they've always been like that with IP. That said, I also give WWE kudos for letting the trademark lapse given that they could have just as easily reapplied for it.

AEW doesn't call him Cody Rhodes, but they kind of do by always mentioning his brother Dustin "Rhodes" and his father Dusty "Rhodes."
I don't want to hear a ring announcer or commentator say his name, I want him to say it in one of his promos. He's got the skill to make it mean something.
Also, Cody isn't allowed to challenge for the AEW World Championship, but that contract doesn't say anything about Cody Rhodes.

Jericho, MJF etc have called him Cody Rhodes in promos before. The trademark seemed to literally apply to when he was wrestling in a match. Not that I'm an expert on wrestling trademarks far from it I'm just making assumptions based on when they've used his last name in the past. That said yeah I think it could be best if he introduces it himself. Though when he did the Cody with Brandi and put the huge emphasis on Rhodes at double or nothing I popped pretty hard.

Cody is just today's Jeff Jarrett. Nothing great, nothing flashy. But has a name and WWE rub . So he will have that attention. I'm a fan, but very comparable

I'm a fan, but very comparable He's a southern style wrestler who gets himself over with story telling and promos. Cody is better than Jarrett. Jarrett was/is a leach on pro wrestling, Cody actually gets himself and other people over.

As much as it was hard to believe most of what Mike Graham said, you can't deny the "never drew a dime" line. Jarrett had a great feud with Razor but that was all Razor. If had been Honkytonk instead of Jarrett fans would have been crazy over the feud. Jarrett just never had the "it" factor to be in a position with a Razor or Michaels or Austin or Diesel. He's fun to watch but more of a lower level against a Savio Vega but even 1996 Ahmed Johnson was way above Jarrett's league. Cody might not be his father or Dustin but he definitely has a lot of tools to take a company to the next level on screen and behind the scenes.
