Don’t see a thread for a few years, so thought I’d start a new one that specifically focuses on basketball.
Basketball was always my preferred card to collect. Had not bought boxes for years after my last box being boring. Shortly after the quarantines started, I thought it would be fun to get a box of basketball cards and a box of wrestling cards. Found some good deals on the WWE stuff but it was blowing my mind how crazy basketball card pricing has gotten. Low end products like NBA Hoops had the Hobby Box price for like double and some higher end product even more. I saw like the Select product on release was suggested at $150 per box and most everywhere that has them is charging $550. Even the boxes one would get at Target and Wal-Mart for $20 are like $60.
This primarily applies to last year and this year product and I was assuming high profile rookies like Doncic, Young, Williamson and Morant. It seemed Kobe Bryant had some signed cards in some of this product so I was thinking maybe that caused some of the inflation. It seems from reading things online that stuff has really blown up since January as some standard rookie cards of players, not even short print are going insane. I need to find some of my old boxes as there are some common Lebrons from 2012 that are going for $50 a piece, which seems really odd.
Anyone here a collector dealing experience collecting during this boom? Or trying to jump in or back in and getting frozen out from some of the current craze?

I can't answer your post point-by-point, but I know that the hobby has changed significantly since my collecting days. When Panini became the sole licensed distributor of NBA cards, they decided to focus on high-end products. From what I'm reading/hearing, the hobby isn't doing too well with kids and teens, so card companies like Panini are focusing on premium products for middle-aged guys. Hence, there are products like Immaculate, National Treasures, and Flawless that cost hundreds of dollars for a box and "hits", like a LeBron Auto Multi-colored patch or a Zion Williamson RC are worth thousands.

I am more of a football card collector, which Panini also holds the exclusive rights to. (still bummed Topps is out of the NBA and NFL)
I am not a big fan of Panini products, they have grown on me in these last couple years. In terms of the NBA, they have really solidifed Prizm as the premier brand of basketball cards. The silver prizm cards are insanely collectible and very expensive even for non-RCs.

Sports cards are a business now. Between box breakers, graded cards, and $22,000 boxes, there is money to be had.
It's smarter to spend your dough on individual cards you want.
I know we all get that gambling itch from time-to-time, but it really isn't worth it. Why spend $100 on a box and get $25 worth of cards from a team you hate in it? Just spend that $100 on singles.

Late to this party, but didn’t see this thread. I haven’t been a regular buyer since Topps and UD lost their licenses in 2010. I just don’t like Panini. I was big in from ‘89 (very few cards to get then)-2004-05, and then sporadically dug in, I have collected a nice arsenal. 700 different Jordan cards. (20 game used, 3 Auto, 1 Dual game used/auto) including a few booking for several thousand dollars. Including both his ‘86 Fleer in PSA 7, ‘86 Fleer Sticker PSA 8 and his ‘84 Star co XRC in BGS 7) I have probably over 200 different Kobe cards including every rookie (I was really busting in ‘96-‘97 for Allen Iverson...and whaddyanknow) including his ‘96 Finest Bronze Refractor (and yes, I have his ‘96 Topps Chrome. It’s a BGS 8.5) Every Star/HOFers biggest Rookie from ‘86-‘01 (that was a horrible year for rookies haha). PSA 8 Topps ‘80 Magic/Bird rookie. 2003 I started buying feverishly for Lebronmania and came out with 12 different rookies (and 3 of his Topps 221 2 raw and one PSA 9) including his Topps, Topps Finest, Topps Chrome, and A guy from a local shop I buy from hit his Exquisite rookie...Imwish that was me haha...everyday...Every base Jordan from ‘84-‘98-‘99 including every insert up to ‘95. Every Shaq card from ‘92-‘93 including the two classic Autos. Put a lot in. Looking at the way things are now...it’s insane! People are basically day trading with cardboard! This is either a new era or a lot of people are going to lose a LOTTA money when this ing thing bursts (I’ve seen it happen twice now)

Can’t get Lebron autos out of Panini. He is sign to an exclusive auto deal to Upper Deck and owns stake in Upper Deck along with Mike.

I’m definitely late to this party but I just got into Prizm NBA 2020 draft cards. I picked up 3 hobby boxes and am hooked!
If anyone else collects these or are familiar with Prizm, I’d appreciate some tips since I’m new
