In watching these old wrestling shows lately, there is a lot of early 80s Dusty Rhodes promos and interviews. I legit feel that he wasn't good at it. I know fans will say and even pro wrestlers in the business will say that Dusty was great on the stick.
I can't help but wonder if the wrestlers from that era said Dusty was so good only because Dusty was the booker in like every territory he went to. So if someone bad mouthed Dusty, they definitely wouldn't get a push, or a win, or any money in that area.
I am not saying Dusty was horrible on the stick, but I don't think he was the greatest of all time either like others would say.
What does everyone else think about Dusty on the microphone??

He was great on the microphone. The Hard Times promo is still raved about to this day.

I have heard that promo and to me it was okay. I don't feel it stood out above anything else though that I have heard.

Dusty Rhodes made alot of people believe in what he would say on TV. That is what made him great. Hard Times is one of the greatest promos of all time. These wrestlers today should watch his stuff.

Have to disagree. I thought He did a great promo....some of his stuff is gold. Even during the Million $$ Man feud he had some great backstage promos with Mean Gene when Saphire bolted on him.

I guess I am the odd man out on this one.
Just the promo I saw him do on these old Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling shows when something like, "There are Kings and Queens, and I am a blonde haired man to come here and clean up the area" or something of that matter. And that was pretty much all he said.
I just never thought Dusty was great on the microphone. But to the ones who do?? Cool! But I will keep watching and see if he cuts a promo that hits home with me where I say, "okay, he made me a believer there."

All I know is that he booked plenty of great NWA shows staying up late in a $60 motel on the road

Dusty's promos were the most memorable part of his career. Yes, he was a great athlete and he had some solid matches, but it was his range on the mic where he stood out. He could be funny, charming, and gregarious. He could also sell anger in a way that few other wrestlers could even approach. That's why he had such an effect on the business even after he got too old to be a full-timer.

His NWA years were a bit before my time as I became a wrestling fan around the time of his WWF run. I loved his WWF run and the interviews and promos he did were just amazing. He was one of my favorite commentators too and you just knew wrestling was in his blood rather than some commentators who may have been money first, wrestling second. I do wonder if he's responsible for Sapphire being let go as it wouldn't surprise me if he had still wanted to have the "prostitute" as his valet.

I think the reason that he is considered a great promo is because he rarely, if ever, stumbled during an interview/promo. He had a good flow to his words, he stayed in character and on-point, and could convey emotion (anger, hatred, sadness, excitement). And he didn't break kayfabe just to "pop" the crowd or make them Oooo or ah. I still say Jake is the best interview/promo that I have ever seen, but Dusty is a great one as well.

dusty wasn't an athlete, wasn't pretty or considerably mean looking...but he was dusty. he knew how to get people to believe in his words, and few have done it better.

I mean, his commentary wasn’t top notch unless you liked everything he did, but on promos when he had a target and was going full force at them, he gave that big feel. there’s a lot of dusty rhodes in Hogan’s hulkamania persona
