man, if dusty couldn't talk and didn't have a boatload of charisma, then WHAT the hell did get him over? dusty wasn't an athlete, wasn't pretty or considerably mean looking...but he was dusty. he knew how to get people to believe in his words, and few have done it better. I'd definitely have to argue that point unless you mean that he wasn't an athletic in comparison to some of other legendary wrestlers who work faster, more intricate styles. Before he was a pro wrestler, Dusty played football and baseball on the college level, and briefly played pro football for a defunct pro league. I'd say that qualifies him as an athlete. Also, even though I wasn't always a fan of his style of in-ring work, his stamina never ceased to amaze me. He could go hard for 20+ minutes, even when gushing blood.

I should have said he didn’t resemble the typical mould for an athlete.

I should have said he didn’t resemble the typical mould for an athlete. He certainly wasn't poetry in motion like Kofi or Daniel Bryan, but he had that blocky body that many Greco-Roman/NCAA heavyweights have. They don't always have much definition, but there's a lot of functional muscle there. I was recently thinking that Otis is in this same vein of worker. He'll never appear on the cover of Muscle & Fitness, but he's one of those guys who would rather throw you than know you.

Hands down the best promo guy. The best part was years ago when Rock ripped off the hard times promo all the kids on social media were going on and on about how great Rock was....yet they never knew Dusty did it years before.
Dustys promos gave wrestling believability. When he got in front of a mic and said he was gonna beat ivan koloff so bad the Kremlin would hurt in the morning, you believed it.

Dusty can talk them all into the seats. Definitely in the top 5 talkers.

I think what made Dusty work was his gimmick. It was complete from top to bottom. He looked like a common man, he talked like a common man, he (sometimes) dressed like the common man. So when he hurt, the fans hurt. When he spoke, the fans listened. He oozed charisma. Those exact same words from just about anyone else and it probably wouldn't have worked.
