I am still watching old Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling, and Greg Valentine just turned face. I know he was face in the WWF in 1991, and to me both his Mid Atlantic face turn in 1984 and his WWF face turn in 1991 felt weird, like it just wasn't right. To me, Greg is a natural heel, and that's how he should always be portrayed.
Same with Bob Orton Jr. in 1983 in that area. He was a face, and it just didn't feel right until he turned heel on Flair to help Race and Slater beat up Flair, then that was the Orton that felt familiar.
Dory Funk Jr. is the same too. He had a face run in that area, and to me he is just a natural heel.
Yet when I started watching that territory on the WWE Network, Paul Jones was a big time baby face. But to me that didn't feel right. When he turned heel, that was the Paul Jones I knew.
But I watched Jack and Jerry Brisco turn heel and that felt weird. They were just better as baby faces for some reason.
So what wrestlers do you guys think of as just natural heels or natural faces over the last 30 years of watching wrestling??

The first one that I thought of was Jimmy Hart. His face run with Brutus and Hogan felt contrived. He played the irritating cowardly manager so well, I couldn’t take him seriously as a face.
Probably an unpopular one but Andre the Giant. I get he was a face for years before he turned on Hogan, but for me he was born to be a heel. His size (both real and billed) put him at an advantage against most wrestlers and, to me, that’s a total heel trait. When I watch some of his earlier matches it feels weird to see him get cheered.
Bam Bam Bigelow as well. When he came to the WWF in 87, he never sat well as a face for me.
Mr Perfect as a face. When he turned late 92 his face run was awful in my opinion. Was always at his best when he was dripping in arrogance.
The Natural Disasters had no business as faces. I wish Earthquake had a longer run as the top heel.
I’m struggling for heels that were natural faces.

Sid to me is a natural heel. The way he would scream during his promos like telling Mean Gene at WM VIII ''SHUT UP YOU BALD FAT LITTLE OAF!!'' heel all the way there.
Definitely agree with guys like Hennig and Valentine. Both guys belonged in the heel role.
Vader is another guy who was a natural heel. I never liked his face run in 97/8.
Natural babyface well Sting comes to mind. Still have no idea why they turned em heel in 99.
Ricky Morton as well. Such a natural in the face role with the RNR Express and then they turn em heel in 91 to join the York Foundation. He just didn't fit in that role IMO.

Even the fans didn't go along with it, some booed but most still cheered. It didn't last long and they turned him back to baby face. It reminded me of WWF turning Steve Austin heel, the fans just didn't want it to happen.

I am not a big fan, but gotta give credit to Hogan as one of very few main eventers that played an excellent face and and an excellent heel.

I always found it interesting when wrestlers said they preferred to play heels. My feeling is that most guys careers really advance and credibility develops when a guy is a heel, and popularity then grows again when a guy turns from heel to face.
The only wrestler I ever really felt just couldn't be an effective face was HHH. The only schtick he does as a face is be sarcastic jackass that kind of acts like a heel (2006-2010) or a no nonsense, championship driven competitor without personality (2002, 2011-2013). He's turned on so many people (X-Pac, HBK, Orton, Batista, Flair, Daniel Bryan, etc) that he never really was able to wash off the stank of being a self-centered, cold hearted character.
The Undertaker is also a terrible heel in any iteration besides his early years where he was a mysterious character. 1999 Ministry of Darkness Taker was pretty absurd and 2002 Big Evil was just a crappy generic biker heel gimmick.
I also think Jericho and Randy Orton are just 2 guys that are so good that are even more likable as heels than as faces, so they end up turning into faces.

Any time they made Ric Flair into a face, it just never worked. When they tried in WCW it was not good, and when they tried in the WWE it was lame. The whole thing when Flair "retired", he was blubbering and crying. That is not how the "Nature Boy" should have gone out. They still could have had the match, but should have had Flair turn heel a couple months before just to give the match an edge. Flair is the "dirtiest player in the game", so he should have fought more dirty. His career was on the line after all. Flair should have strutted his way back up the ramp, gave a final "WOOOO". Then if he teared up it would have been cool.
Piper was not a good face except in Portland and then saving Gordon Solie. The face run in the WWE just never suited him.
The Nasty Boys as faces VS Money Inc. Just not good.
I agree with Valentine, he has a permanent scowl on his face. Who the hell wants to cheer that?!

I liked Ric Flair and Rowdy Roddy Piper either way. Greg Valentine is a natural heel.
