Bandalero If there is a group that's thought stuff like that out, it's probably these guys. It's totally a fair criticism that sometimes they can get too in depth with their ideas and miss some glaring flaws, like your point about it coming across as just 50/50 booking. To the general public member, I can definitely see how that match came across of "oh great, 50/50". Or even to long term fans like you or me. Page & Omega are two of my favourite wrestlers, so I'm paying closer attention in their stories and matches, but I'll bet I've missed plenty of subtle things with other matches that I was less invested in. I could also be reading way too much into it. To me that just means they're doing a good job though. It's like a great song, it can mean totally different things to different people, and people can take meaning the artist didn't even intend. I could definitely be doing that here.
That said they've definitely had some fun subtle angles. The Rick Knox payoff at Full Gear comes to mind. He was getting crapped on during BTE for weeks about being too lenient as a tag team ref, so at full gear with Bucks vs. P&P he just went ham on the rules, disallowed a P&P tag to a shoe, etc. He was really over the top with it if you'd been following his story, but if you were just watching it as a match with no context, he just looked like a regular strict but half blind ref. I was waiting for the Knox payoff so I was already looking for those spots to come. Now he's the only tag ref I've heard count past 5 or 6 in the 10 count. He made it up to 8 last night, and I think he'll be the first to pull the trigger on a 10 second DQ. I would pop hard if the Bucks were the first team to get hit by that.
I agree the women's division still needs help. I absolutely love women's wrestling, and I'll keep supporting the AEW women's division, but for general appeal, yeah, it still has a long way to go. Though, to be fair, it has also come a long way in a year. International travel opening up again will help. They're stuck without Riho, Yuka, Shanna, Bea, and Sadie Gibbs right now, all of whom are either really strong already or oozing with potential imo. Finding a couple big names to come in would be so good though. If Tessa decided to come over when her contract runs out, oh boy. That'll put the division on the map in a hurry.
Your point about MJF is pretty legit, and I like that angle. He would've been a great winner for that ladder match as an alternative. (Though in MLW they shot a hilarious angle where he was afraid of heights and wouldn't climb the ladder in a tag team ladder match and made Aria Blake do it for him). If we thought he was obnoxious with just a ring, give him that chip too. Oh boy.
