So I just started trying to re-watch No Holds Barred for the first time since it's initial release. So my dumb question is, why didn't they just make the movie about Hulk Hogan? Why make a fictional character named Rip, when they made him so close to Hogan anyway? Mean Gene & Jesse played themselves, so why not Hogan?
Not sure anyone has any info, but now I'm curious.
Side note: I didn't realize till today that the first opponent was Bill Eadie. He was in really good shape at this point.

I never understood that either. Especially when they brought Zeus in to the WWF as Zeus to feud with Hogan because of heat from the movie. So why not just have it be a Hulk Hogan movie?? Hulk was popular enough in 1988 when they made that movie that fans would have loved a movie about Hulk Hogan - fake or real.

Even though I was a big Hulkamaniac, I actually never saw No Holds Barred until almost 20 years after it was in theatres when I bought a VHS copy for $2. I had to throw it away along with the almost all of my VHS cassettes when I moved a few years ago

Lol, I got through the first ten minutes and went... "nah". Around the late 1990s Blockbuster had a "enjoy it or it's free" promotion where if you didn't like the movie you could just exchange it for another rental. I watched a small bit of No Holds Barred and it was so awful I went back with my grandfather to switch it out for another movie.

I believe Hogan wanted to get deep into movies. And this was a way to update his SAG card. Which would of included insurance.

The only thing I remember at all from that movie was the scene where I think Hogan picks up the limo driver and said "Whhhhaaaats that smeelll!!?" and then the driver replies like a wimp "Dooo dooo doookie"....lol so stupid.

Honestly the only things I remember about No Holds Barred is the dookie scene and the one where Rip has the guy on the front of his motorcycle and then hits the brakes and basically kills the guy since he went head first into a tree.

Ill give you the answer that Bruce gave Conrad when he essentially asked the same thing. Merchandising. They were able to release tons of Rip Em shirts, posters etc to merchandise whereas if it was just Hogan in red & yellow it would be the same stuff they were putting out.

I would highly doubt they conceived of the movie thinking Zeus would be brought in to face Hogan in a storyline. I'm pretty sure the PPV event of "the movie/the match" was done as a reaction to recoup losses from the project.
Hogan also had his eyes on Hollywood for a while and probably didn't want to play "Hulk Hogan" as well as the aforementioned merchandising.
I can't recall where but I remember hearing that the production wanted Hogan's character specifically in blue for whatever reason.

My wife had it on every day all day except for the one week our daughter had to have emergency surgery on her gallbladder. That Thursday and Friday she missed it. But we have them all on dvd and the first few seasons on digital. We still need to finish the digital library maybe we’ll do it this week seeing tomorrow is my wife’s birthday and Friday is our Anniversary. So maybe that’s what I‘ll get her. She can’t wait to get the Peacock streaming service to see the new Psych movie is July.

Yeah, not sure if I will get the Peacock streaming service but I would like to see the new Psych movie, I still haven't seen the one they did a few years back. They also show two episodes back to back at 4 and 5 in the morning on the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel (HMM).
