So I'm currently going through the Network and one of my favourite times ever, the period between Fully Loaded 99 and Royal Rumble 00. It's a period that isnt really talked about but if you watch, literally every episode of Raw and Smackdown is packed brim to brim with action and meaningful moments. So much happens in such a short time; we lose Taker for 8 or so months, we lose Austin for nearly a year, Rock'n'Sock, Bulldog returns and gets this weird kinda-push, DX explodes then regroups, the emergence of the McMahon-Hemsley group, Mankind turns into a comedy act then tries to retire THEN gets pulled back to action in the form of Hardcore Legend Cactus Jack, Too Cool and Rikishi debut and really hit it off right away, and so much more.
It's also the timescale where we lost Russo as headwriter and the show really kinda went full blast and crazy, especially in that last few months.
So lads and ladettes, how about we discuss this time?
Adding the figure element too, it's when the TTL figures started hitting shelves and changed the fig game yet again!

It was in 1999 that I went to see my first live WWE show.

That time period was very interesting in the attitude era. We saw the debut of Chris Jericho, which was huge. The Tag Titles changed hands like every other week it seemed. The addition to Smackdown made things much more hectic in trying to keep order who was champion.
The forming of a heel DX group to me came out of no where. I liked it though. It was different from the DX group a year earlier with those same men.
We also got the wedding of Test and Stephanie, and having Triple H end up with Steph, thus changing the wrestling world - fake and reality - forever!

Good if you like entertainment. Bad if you like wrestling.

Good if you like entertainment. Bad if you like wrestling. Gotta disagree man, there were alot of good matches. They may have been wrapped in weird storylines but guys like Venis, Blackman, Jericho, Angle and the tag division really put on great lil matches. The main event scene was pretty much a brawl sure, but damn they were fun brawls every week!

I mean, come on ... Mankind with a sock, Scotty 2 Hotty, Rikishi, DX pulling pranks ... you may as well watch MTV.

So you like men in black trunks with beards doing wrestling with no entertainment value to it at all?? Boring!!!
The attitude era was as popular as it was and holds up to this day even by non wrestling fans is because of the over the top antics, the charisma, the story lines, the drama, the sex, and everything all wrapped up into one big bubble of fun times!
NXT UK has to seriously be the most boring wrestling I have ever seen in my life. Black trunks?? Check. Beards?? Check. Let's go wrestle for 30 minutes, kick out of every high spot move imaginable and beat me with a clothesline. Okay! No thanks.

Stuff like that just doesn't draw. I watched an NXT UK episode and I switched off halfway through. it was just generic guys wrestling with no personalities. Wrestling the entertainment side.

Yes, I like wrestling, not Sports Entertainment. Give me Benoit vs Guerrero over STONE COLD! STONE COLD! squirting Vince with beer every single time.

The Attitude Era had some great characters just like the 80s. They took it to the next level and put out some good matches and storylines. I would easily take it back over the current WWE. Bray Wyatt would have fit in well around that time.

Why is it the cool thing to hate on the attitude era these days?
This time was a roller coaster, you had to watch each week as you never knew what the hell was going on. The characters back then were a million times more interesting than what we have now.
Also from an in ring point of view it was also great, plus the wwe actually gave you a reason to care about most of the matches that were happening

yeah Mid 99 to RR 00 was a great time with some weirdness thrown in.
They knew Austin was on borrowed time from the night of Fully loaded 1999. His neck was bad that night and he was told the morning after that an op was inbound...and soon. Rock was getting positioned as the guy from August onwards & Austin's time wrestling was drastically reduced.
SD! was great too....the 1st ep & promo between HHH & Rock was a thriller. HBK heel turn n the ME etc
Austin & Rock vs the NAO and the reformation of DX was a crazy episode of SD!...also strange was how HHH & Chyna were separated with no real explanation...it was weird seeing DX get back together & her not be in there. Of course we didn't know at the time but Steph was scheduled to take her place in DX.
Jerichos debut was great but man was his stuff flat for a while after...whooo.
Rock n Sock were powerful....
Austin vs DX was great stuff.
Bulldogs return & mini push was weird as hell to me at the time....
Angles debut & rise was great stuff as well
Public Enemy were in & out....
Austin being ran over was a shocker....& the storyline had genuine mystique.
Dudleys debuted & made an immediate impact.
Big Show as champ....wow. awful
Shamrocks departure....
Tag team scene livening up
Foley turning into Jack was a mark out moment for me....the match at RR00 was a scorcher. Actually the entire event was
Taz debut was phenomenal. pity the arrival of Benoit & co overshadowed him completely.
Radicalz coming in was great...their turn on Foley shocked the sh*t outta me. I wish Vince had taken Douglas too though...
Ive disliked Stephanie McMahon intensely since 2001 but during the McMahon/Helmsley storyline? She was great....

This time period was great in terms of characters and storylines, but the wrestling was mostly bad. That’s ok as the ratings were on an all time high and business was great.

I started watching in 1986 religiously. Kind of waned off in 93/94, started back religiously in 1995
This exact time period got me to stop watching wrestling until about 2006/07. Still watch from then to now Don’t love it but it’s something to keep up with
Nothing will ever beat the mid to late 80’s, early 90’s and then the rise of the Attitude Era in my eyes. That was must see tv. Whether it was 5 star matches or not, didn’t matter, everyone was glued in every week

I wish I started watching in the mid 80s. Thanks to dvds and stuff I have seen plenty of wrestling’s best decade- the 80s.

Also from an in ring point of view it was also great, plus the wwe actually gave you a reason to care about most of the matches that were happening Probably something to do with today's expectations and mindset, in and out of wrestling. The hate of the attitude era seems to be due to the disgust at the portrayal of women and today's "woke" culture (which is overrated as hell and repeatedly gets worse every year) and the indy wrestling fans who disconnect from the idea of entertainment and wrestling. Like the commenter a few comments above. Pure wrestling with no character/build/entertainment is like plain, fried rump steak. It's nice every now and then for a change, but you need the seasoning and flame-grilling for it to taste good. I will never get the over-emphasis of wrestling with today's hardcore fans. Back in the AE, yes it wasn't as good as today, but the matches were short enough that you didn't get saddled with too many boring matches and the characters were interesting enough to pay attention. A lot of mid carders lacked certain skills, just like some guys nowadays lack character/uniqueness. Many hardcore fans may like the "you-go-I-go, you-go-I-go", 10 superkicks? Kick out. 450 splash/shooting star press? Kick out. Canadian destroyer x2? Kick out. Your finisher - I kick out, my finisher - you kick out, ad nauseum wrestling, but it gets to the point where it lacks reasoning or story. The AE then gets hated on cos it's the thing to do now, and then the RA era (which was good, but not perfect) is now getting praised to an OTT degree.

I was never the biggest fan of the WWE attitude era. I was a WCW fan then. For me the WWE’s best years was the 80’s - early 90’s. The Attitude er was entertaining for the stuff I did enjoy, but there was a lot I could do without. (Which the same could be said for any era) But I do think people look back at it through rose colored glasses and over glorify it. But that said as a whole it was certainly better than anything since then. But ‘99 was when I started wanting to watch the WWE more frequently.
