I think him not being one of Vince's stereotypical body guys is a big part of what got him over. Especially starting of his giant run opposite of John Cena. Saying he needed to be better in the ring is a much more fair criticism. People don't like to admit that he was hella sloppy a lot of the time. Worst top-rope elbow drop I've ever seen.

Worst top-rope elbow drop I've ever seen. THANK YOU! I loved the year of Punk on top, but I cringed every time he did that elbow! lol It was so bad it once even got long time referee Jack Doan fired (at 1 min 50). Joking all three screw up here but Punk's elbow left alot to be desired.....

Were there body guys that were as good as Punk that didn't get their due though? Vince didn't buy him as top guy because he didn't look like he could kick someone's ass. That's such a bullcrap excuse. when you have Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor. Are the biggest draw in combat sports. Imagine that going with talent not size. Welcome to the mind of Vincent K. Mac

I never had any issue with Punk's physique. His workouts were cardio-centric, and that showed in the ring. Plenty of legends aren't/weren't "body" guys. However, despite being a huge fan of his, I always thought that the lack of muscle should have translated to a few more athletic/aerial moves. I also don't think the GTS was a great move for him to use since he wasn't a power guy. He really struggled to fluidly incorporate this against bigger wrestlers.

Punk's physique never bothered me once, even now looking at pics of him in WWE it still doesn't bother me. In fact, there were parts in his WWE career where he actually looked in great shape for someone his size.
When you're travelling 200+ days a year as the top guy, it can be hard for some to keep up this immaculate body... Especially when you're beat up with injuries for a lot of it.
Edge entered the Main Event of WrestleMania 24 as World Champion, at a time where you could consider him somewhat 'Fat'. So i don't think it really has anything to do with what shape you're in. If management loves you, they'll push you accordingly, if they don't, they won't.
Punk was never high in the eyes of management in general as we all know. His talent in the ring, on the mic, his character, and his popularity got him his spot as a top guy. I think his limit came as a result of the stories that 'If someone gets themselves over, management won't want to push them because they didn't create them'. So they were only ever going to push him so far because of the popularity he earned for himself.
Not everyone has to be jacked to the moon with bulging muscles and 20 pack abs to be THE top guy.

Looking different was a big part of Punk's appeal. It's McMahon's stubborn unwillingness to embrace what he had, and maybe both of their attitudes, that's the issue, not Punk's body type. But when it comes to Vince it boils down to the fact that if you wanna be a top top guy who closes Wrestlemania (THE GUY) you need to have muscles. You mentioned stubborness but if Punk eventually bit the bullet and got in shape, things could have been different and maybe he would have got that Mania main event. Daniel Bryan The Miz Shawn Michaels Edge Chris Jericho Steve Austin These guys all weren’t/aren’t very muscular when they main evented WrestleManias. Muscles and physique have nothing to do with it. They were all company men, especially The Miz.

Just cos Austin didn't have a 6 pack didn't mean he wasn't muscular.
Jericho was a pretty decent size in 2001 onwards, and Michaels was muscular but slim.
But you're right they all bust their asses and proved themselves to Vince. Same for JBL.
However he does look over people like that for others with less talent but good physiques, that is undeniable. Roman Reigns, Jinder Mahal, Jack Swagger.... the list goes on.

I didn't think his body looked bad at all. He wasn't overly muscular, but shouldn't wrestling be past cosmetic appearance now? I don't think it should've ever mattered in the first place

There was nothing wrong with CM Punk's physique.
Even Ric Flair through many points of his career wasn't some ripped adonis.

I believe he stopped working out shortly after winning Money in the Bank in 2005. Muslces and physique have alot to do with it when Vince McMahon is involved. There are some acceptions to the rule but Punk was not one. He wasn't a body or company guy. But he was a generational talent, just not the guy.

This entire notion is the very definition of a "VINCE" problem, not a "PUNK" problem
We get it. Vince likes big sweaty muscle men. *We know*.
But the point is that Punk wasn't a Vince guy to begin with. CM Punk could have gotten himself ripped to the point of looking just like Cena, and it wouldn't have changed Punk's unwillingness to do what Vince wanted. Mick Foley was world champ, for crying out loud! You can succeed in the WWE without looking like Johnny Largemeat! Yes, in Vince's mind, having more abs than brains is a major factor in your success. But Punk refused from day 1 to drink the McMahonsim Kool-Aid. Even if he had been ripped, he wasn't Vince's idea of a team player or a company guy, so it wouldn't have mattered.

I agree and I mean when it comes to builds Edge wasn’t at his best but it never matters and you could still tell he has big arms he’s big dude and still is definitely fit
