Going through PTW 91 from my personal collection and each show will usually have a match or two from Wrestling Challenge and man was Anvil horrible in this role. They knew Bret would be fine on his own post Mania VII but Neidhart not so much so they put em in the booth for a little run.
Total failure. Why try and put a 3rd wheel with Bobby/Gorilla of all people? Piper with em at SSlam 91 was fine for a one off considering his history with Heenan but Neidhart just didn't have the personality for this at all.Heenan ripping on em was the only positive from this.
They definitely did the right thing by axing em from the booth by Summer's end that's for sure.

Didn't they set up Anvil's return to the ring for Ric Flair's first big TV program?? I remember Anvil vs. Flair happening and Flair and the Beverly Brothers injured his knee, thus bringing in Owen to form the New Foundation.

Yeah I believe that match was Flairs first big match on WWF TV.They did the injury angle like you mentioned and he would come back by years end with Owen for a feud with the Beverly's that didn't go far at all.

Other than giving him something to do was there any reason In the storylines why he was put in the booth?

Is this before or after he got into the fight with the flight attendant? I remember in Bret's book he said that the Anvil was going to get released, but Vince had to keep him around because Jim owed him a ton of money after paying for his court costs.

After as I believe that incident took place in the late 80s. I never read Bret's book but thinking about it,I wouldn't be surprised if it was a debt issue with him and Vince.

Good at broadcasting or not anvil was still part of one of the stand out wrestling moments from my childhood - the closing of challenge with Bobby standing with the nwa big gold belt with the iconic comparing icecream to horse manure speech and announcing ric flair was coming to the wwf and gorilla and jim looking at each other shocked!! Still get goosebumps watching that.
