It's surreal when you think about it. Roddy Piper died five years ago today. I know, it's surreal when you think of anyone on the anniversary of their deaths. But yeah, this one sucked for me. Roddy was, and still is, my all time favorite person ever. Almost everything I do in indie wrestling I've stolen from Piper. When I go my acting I always add a little bit of Roddy in it as well. Hell, I was Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice and while on stage, I was wearing my "Hot Rod" shirt under my costume! I was lucky to meet Roddy numerous times, and sure he said he remembered me, lol, I think he was just being nice, and every single time Rod was just the greatest person you could ever meet. It was very cool to tell him how much he inspired me and that huge smile on his face when I did. Since his death I have also been lucky enough to have contact with his wife, Kitty, and his daughter Ariel, and also his former agent, now if you would have told the 12 year old me that in the future I'd be interacting with his family I would have laughed. It's still very weird to me that we "talk" over private messages over facebook and do some other things with them.
Five long years and also five short years since the passing of Hot Rod. Makes you think what he would be doing if he was still alive? I really think he would be apart of AEW in some way, Roddy was always proud and willing to help anyone out there in this business. And he'd be helping out AEW as a kick in the balls to Junior. LOL
Thanks Rod for everything.

Roddy was definitely one of those guys, that it almost seemed like, he's never going to die, even though every one's time is eventually up. He was just that special kind of bigger than life though, that you could picture him just always being there. He was really one of those special, not just talents, but people. I don't think I've ever heard a single negative fan interaction involving him, every story I've ever heard, was him being thrilled to meet fans, and that it came off like it was his honor to meet with them. Straight up, the man cared, whether it was his fans, his family or his fellow wrestlers. I know his name gets brought up a lot of wrestlers that should have been World Champion, but honestly, after a certain point, he was bigger than any World Title, he just didn't need it.

So it’s been 5 years and a few days since Vince fired him because of some podcast beef with Stone Cold.

I know I watched some wrestling prior but my earliest vivid memory was The War to Settle the Score. It hooked me right away. Nine year old me knew I was supposed to like and cheer Hogan but I found myself always quoting Piper. It took me a couple years to figure out it was OK to like the bad guy.

Seeing Piper as a babyface feuding with Hogan the heel was cool. I remember when he turned up and I was psyched for it. the build up and reveal of Bisch as the power behind the nWo was great stuff. I enjoyed Starrcade 1996 too but man did they screw it up badly with the finish etc.

Rowdy Roddy Piper would be on the Mt. Rushmore heels of pro wrestling. I think if he were still around that he would be hanging out with his friends Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat and Bret Hart.
