So I was watching Heat from early 99 and there was a segment where Tiger Ali Singh offers a fan $500 to do a Jim Ross impersonation and Ed Ferrara is the fan who comes out. This was at a time where Jim Ross had only been back for a couple of weeks after having a Bells Palsy episode and was in rough shape. It’s kind of interesting how WWE makes a big deal out of the Oklahoma character but never mentions this. What are your thoughts?
2:30 is where Ed enters the ring

Wasnt this just a one time TV appearance in the WWF for Ed Ferrara? It was obviously the precursor to what he would do in WCW, including putting the Cruiserweight Championship on himself.

Its the only time I’ve ever seen him on WWF. He did take the impersonation a lot further in WCW but it’s interesting how it started here.

Well considering Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara left for WCW in October of 1999, they just did it to do it I'm guessing. A silly, and dumb one-off doesn't mean anything since the "big deal" comes from weeks and weeks of this being one of the main storylines in WCW. And isn't Jim Ross the one who made it a bigger deal than the WWF?

I wasn’t watching very much at that time. I just thought it was interesting how JR $hit on Ed for it but took part in this angle. On another note Dr Death damn near broke his neck with that suplex.

I think dr death's viciousness on that suplex let's you know exactly how JR and Dr Death felt about the impersonation.

So i was reading that Dr Death told Ed not to jump when he took it because he could over rotate and hurt himself. I guess Ed forgot and jumped anyways and that's why he landed like that. This is why you shouldn't have writers taking bumps.

I think JR may have been more okay with it because there was a direct amount of heat they could get by destroying this 'fan' - Russo probably pitched the idea, having seen Ferrara do the impersonation, and badda boom. in wcw, they ran the angle till the dead horse was fully beat, and it was done in distaste considering dr death had legit heat with JR.

I asked JR what Dr Death thought of Ed Ferreira doing Oklahoma and JR said that Dr Death never discussed it, but it was all fictional so he went with it.
Dr Death was such a badass I’m sure if he vehemently told them it wasn’t cool to make fun of his friend, it could have scared them not to do it. JR didn’t say that, I’m telling you guys that.

JR and Dr Death were not friends at that time - Dr Death blamed JR heavily for his bad run and injury in the wwf, and was very public about that.

I heard JR talk about it on his podcast once and he said that he never held anything against Dr Death. He was just playing a role and doing what was written for him. I think that when they did it in WWF it was ok because there was a payoff. In WCW it really made no since.
