the guy was gonna take time off either way. the back injury was the reason, but the drugs kept him away for years. I thought he hurt his back in the match with the Undertaker at Royal Rumble 98? Had he left in 1997 he may not have injured his back and had to take 5 years off. Though, it appears he needed those 5 years off to get the help he needed, it may have saved his life.

We probably would have gotten a rematch of WM13, Bret vs Austin for the title with Bret putting over Austin. That would've been a fitting end to this classic feud. Agreed, everything they did together was great.

He wouldn't have done well there. As others have said, he would probably be dead by now
