If I recall this was the first loss for MR.Perfect, and it still blows my mind
Yes Beefcake was super over at this time but I feel like it was a bad loss for Perfect.
Was it a favor to Hogan since Hogan was losing that night?
The Genius was managing for Perfect so I feel like they could have done a DQ or a cheap win for Perfect to protect both guys

It’s funny they say that’s his first loss. I wonder what people that saw his house show losses were thinking back then? Back then certain house shows were televised(MSG, Boston, Philly, etc.).

Brutus was on fire for a while and after the Warrior replacement he deserved a better spot on the card. If Perfect was slated to win the IC title, then Beefcake was the choice to get it off him. On the other hand, they could have taken the crappy Bad News and Piper match (because these guy's egos were bigger than the whole rest of the staff) and made it a real ending and given a double count out finish to Perfect and Beefcake and had Perfect go against Warrior at Summerslam. Every guy on that card knew his place and made the show special. Piper and Bad News were the only guys who couldn't do the right thing.

I don't understand why to be honest.
Perfect was pencilled in to win the IC tournament & Beefcake was set to be his first challenger because he was the guy who ended his undefeated run. Its booking 101. That's why he was given the run. Beefcake was pencilled in to feud with the Heenan Family.
He was "over like rover" & basically KVE & later Bossman(after Kerry was deemed to be a disaster & had to be stripped early) took his run.

I think plans changed when Brutus was injured and couldn't wrestle at Summer Slam. They had to bring in a big name replacement and it wouldn't surprise me if they promised Kerry the IC title to get him sign. I'm a little surprised that they didn't just let Hogan beat Perfect first since they had a match later that month and Hogan won. |

I just can't see them giving the strap to Beefcake and for that long. Not that I have anything against Beefcake, he was really over at the time and I was a fan, but he just doesn't seem to be an IC champion. Also, at the time the WWF and Tag Team titles were held by babyfaces, usually the WWF likes to have the IC title be held by a heel if the WWF title was being held by a babyface, just to give something different. It wasn't a hard-fast rule but I think I heard Prichard or Cornette say that in a podcast. I'm glad they didn't go that route, not that I'm happy about Beefcake's injury, but to me Mr. Perfect needed a long title reign as the IC champion. His second one is one of the better runs for the IC champion. I also think that him holding the title for 8-9 months was really a big help for Bret when he won it at Summer Slam 1991 - it made Bret beating him look like a huge moment. |

Brutus was the man in 1990. He and Bret Hart were the two guys that the fans were clearly wanting to take the WWE into the next decade. I am not exaggerating with that either.
If you go back and listen to the fans when Bret came out with the Hart Foundation, or when Brutus came out for a match, the place went into a crazy frenzy of fans cheering and being excited.
Was Brutus a crappy wrestler?? Sure! But he would have made for a perfect baby face WWF Champion in 1992 had Flair not come in. I think Flair coming in changed a lot of plans that the WWF probably had for 1992. With Hogan leaving in 1992, I could easily see Brutus "the Barber" Beefcake getting at least one run as WWF Champion if he was still wrestling. I still think Bret would have ended up WWF Champion in 1992 too.
