I’d like to start an honest debate/discussion on Sting.
For me, Surfer Sting was who I was introduced to as a child. I have always been a huge Sting fan(#2 all time for me) and the blonde hair and flashy colors had me hooked on first sight. I remember re-watching old VHS tapes my brother had with WCW matches and Sting was above and beyond my favorite WCW wrestler.
The slow burn of Sting transitioning to a new iteration of himself is, to me, the absolute greatest story ever told in wrestling. From him not talking to the pointing of the bat and dropping from the rafters of the building... iconic.
All in all, Crow Sting is my favorite. He wasn’t handled correctly post Starrcade 97, or even arguable including that match. I love the look. The long brown hair with the paint still gives me chills to see. The brooding eyes.
Side note: Wolfpac Sting didn’t really make sense and he had no direction in the group but I was a big fan of the red paint and red boots. It kept the cool factor of the crow look but brought some color into Sting and was probably the most use of both surfer and crow hybrid of Sting. As far as his WCW tenure goes.

I liked Crow Sting, but surfer Sting will always be my number one preference. With the GAB ‘90 match being my favorite all-time match. Wolfpac Sting while I didn’t mind the red boots or singlet scorpions & logo (which is odd because I am really not a fan of the color red unless it’s part of a patriotic look.) but I hated the red face paint.

Surfer Sting all the way.So many classic feuds with Flair,Vader,Rude,Cactus etc back during those days so this is an easy choice for me.
Plus this theme is just so damn timeless

it was kind of like hulkamania to Hollywood: both were great, and perfectly transformed the characters

Huge fan of Sting here but its Surfer all the way for me.
Feuds with Muta, Flair & The 4H in 1990, Vader, The Dangerous Alliance etc were absolute rolled gold. I still maintain & agree with Flair that he should have went to McMahon in late 1992 as the Surfer. WCW didnt capitalise on his popularity at all. Vince would have because he had to can Warrior & Bulldog. I feel it was the only time he cold have went and been used properly. Of Course Turner got wind..he was offered a guge deal to stay and the term "sting money" was coined.
on the Crow Sting? I absolutely LOVE the story where he turns sour after being accused of being nWo. Unfortunately it was all over the moment he stepped in the ring @ Starrcade. 2nd only to the Invasion in blown $$ stakes.

I was never exposed to seeing Surfer Sting, and I don't know if I want to watch tv from back then (no patience). But I could tell he would have been one of my favourites, as a kid or adult back then and I kind of wish I didn't love crow Sting so much because it's skewed my preferences and I don't appreciate surfer Sting for how good he supposedly was back then.

I'm about half way through 1996 Nitros and I'm sad knowing I'm close to the end of Surfer Sting. He's just so great.

Really liked both but, if I had to choose, I would give the nod to Surfer Sting. Surfer Sting was the man when I was getting into WCW Wrestling for the first time, his feuds with Rude, Vader, Jake the Snake, Cactus Jack, and the rest of the Dangerous Alliance were great. But I also did like the crow gimmick, it fit the times, him being darker/more edgy because the fans and WCW turned on him was well done. Shame that Hogan played politics and squashed Sting's run in 1997/98. I think Sting should have played a bigger part in the NWO break-up. Had they kept Sting strong during 1998, I could see Sting getting cheated out of the title, losing it back to Hogan, who would then go on to lose it to Goldberg. From there, they could have built up a match between a very strong Sting and a very strong Goldberg at Starrcade 98 (or a later event in 1999) to see who the leader of WCW was going to be. Having Sting remain strong could have made it look like he really could have been the guy to break Goldberg's undefeated streak first - maybe WCW wouldn't have fallen off so fast in 1999.

The only way anyone chooses crow Sting is if you never watched Surfer Sting.

I'm surprised that basically everyone is picking surfer Sting... but I'm also picking surfer Sting. He was a rare effective white meat babyface, and basically all of Sting's best matches happened when he was surfer Sting. Crow Sting was a solid angle and the build to him taking down Hogan was very strong, even if the execution was terrible, but it's clear to me that surfer Sting was better.

I'm not sure if I can answer this directly. Surfer Sting is what I saw first, and spent years with. And I loved Sting. But I was never into Sting as much as I was during that Late-96 period, all the way up to Starrcade 1997.

Growing up where I did, Sting was not well received. I can't remember the first time I saw him, it was definitely JCP as I don't remember seeing his previous run. We thought Sting was too WWF. And WWF just wasn't our thing.
Having said that Sting eventually won us all over. I'd pick Surfer Sting because that's when he was at his best in my opinion. It's super odd to me seeing Sting after Crow doing a promo in the surfer Sting style if that makes sense.

Other than his billed hometown, there was nothing about his act that indicates a surfer, so I just call him Venice Beach Sting.
