Due to a severe neck injury, and then a hand injury during his training to make a comeback, Edge was out of action from February 2003 - April 2004. When he went on the shelf, he had been positioned as a strong upper midcarder on Smackdown but seemed to be in a stall period in the few months leading up to it (basically feuding with A-Train, Haas, and Benjamin).
My question is, what if Edge didn’t get hurt? He was over as the cocky, cool babyface that was trying to move up the card in 2002, and I believe it was Bruce Pritchard who said they had big plans for him in the Summer of 2003 (basically feuding with Brock if Angle couldn’t get back from his injuries quick enough).
Does Edge being around hinder Cena’s growth? Prevent Benoit and Eddie from moving into the main event? Does Edge win his first title in 2003? A lot of what if’s had Edge not gotten injured.

I couldn't see him winning the World Title in 03 but I can definitely see him playing a big role in the US title ranks.Imagine him vs guys like Benoit and Guerrero for that belt.
Him cashing in and winning his first World Title in 06 was the perfect time IMO.He had a good over a year to establish his heel character which he nailed in spades so him winning there was the right choice to pull the trigger.

I don't think he would have derailed anything for those other guys. I think they would have had him up there with Eddie and Benoit, but could see them having him team with Benoit a year early, possibly leading to a turn and feud like in 2004.
Edge was awesome in 2004 as a tweener and his heel work was outstanding in 2005. He was a fun babyface but a natural heel. The foundations for his main event run would have to be made as a top babyface, but turn as a heel. Which is basically what they did.

I think he would've feuded with Benoit and Eddie nearly the entire year for the US Title. probably could have teamed with Rey at XIX to take on Team Angle and The Guerreros while Benoit faces Undertaker. He probably would have challenged Brock Lesnar at PPVs such as No Mercy and the Royal Rumble, but came up short

Interesting to think about, you could clearly tell he was a guy they had plans for. However, looking back now, things could not have worked any better for him so I am glad it all worked out the way it did.

Great topic, I always thought about that. I honestly don't know if I could see Edge as proper WWE Champion in 2003 or 2004. As stated before, 2006 was perfect. Purely perfect, and this is coming from me idolizing the man. But, who knows maybe he could of made it work? We never truly know. Honestly I been working on project rebooking all of the 00's. I mainly would of had extended Tag run with Rey through mid 03, Edge flirting with a main event run, and US title run between 02-2004 draft.
But, maybe a Angle return wouldn't be as rushed or more time given. And having small trial run with Edge getting the title? I would say if I was to book it purely off my eyes. But I got nothing better to do so off the top of my head.
No Way Out 03 - The Tag match still happens, with Lesnar's team capturing the Pre Mania victory. WrestleMania 19 - Edge and Rey Mysterio, Worlds Greatest Tag Team, Los Guerreros, Beniot and Rhyno take part in WrestleMania TLC match for the WWE Tag Titles with Edge and Rey Mysterio capturing the gold in tone setting match for the night Backlash 2003 - The Worlds Greatest Tag Team take on Edge and Mysterio in 30 minute Tag Team Iron man with the Worlds Greatest Tag Team taking back the titles in a narrow victory. Judgment Day 2003 - Edge starts maturing as a main event prospect and distances himself from Tag Team run, and setting his sights on the WWE Championship. A huge tournament is called to determine Lesnar's next contender. The Tournament is finally called at Judgment Day with Edge and Mysterio the two friends getting the chance of the lifetime. At this event Lesnar also defeats The Big Show by controversial means with Show's foot actually on the rope. Vengeance 2003 - With Lesnar and Show's score not settled properly with the SmackDown rematch with the ring breaking, and Edge the proper 1# contender. A main event is declared for the Vengeance event with Edge bent and motivated on getting the championship. With a upset victory in the main event with Edge capturing the WWE Championship in a historic victory. Summer Slam 2003 - Lesnar saw Edge as opportunist stealing his rightful opportunity. The new Champion faced Lesnar in a emotional show with Lesnar winning the in the main event due to interfearence by Rhyno. Lesnar regained the title and attacked Edge after match brutally beating Edge. With Angle returning and saving Edge setting up the next Lesnar/Angle program. No Mercy 2003 - Edge was furious and went after Rhyno wanting answers. Rhyno at this time was the US Champion. Rhyno stated how Edge left many of his friends in the smoke and the same way with Christian. Rhyno stated he grew sick and wanted to put Edge back in his place. The two faced for the US Championship, with Edge gaining the win. Survivor Series 2003 - Edge took part in the Survivor Series Elimination match that year, being taken out by a Gore from Rhyno. Royal Rumble 2004 - Edge had dropped his US title to the Big Show on the first SmackDown of 2004. Edge entered the Royal Rumble bent on getting back to WrestleMania and the highest point of his entire career. Edge's dreams were crushed by Rhyno in this event. Edge's emotions boiled over with him attacking Rhyno and beating him with a chair as well as eliminating Rhyno from the Rumble. No Way Out 2004 - Rhyno and Edge's rivalry continued with a street fight. A brutal hard hitting affair with Rhyno winning closing out the program for good. WrestleMania XX - Edge looking for a meaning at WrestleMania XX saw himself forced to where he knows best. Edge was placed in his home situation of Tag Team wrestling. Edge was targeted by the Worlds Greatest Tag Team and looked to find a partner in time for WrestleMania to capture the titles. Edge looked far and wide, and once again was reunited with a old friend in Rey Mysterio. As the two looked to make magic twice with both men going on separate paths and forging even bigger reputations. Edge and Rey Mysterio would capture the gold again, where Edge felt it his career was back on track, he was drafted to Raw. Only being forced to make a bigger impact this time around. With the titles being forced to be vacated.
