What If: Only Scott Hall Went To WCW In 1996? We all know the story of the NWO. One of the most interesting things about it is in the documentaries that have been done over the year. It is always made to sound like Kevin Nash was on the fence about leaving and even told Vince that he was with him. The fact that both Hall and Nash's contracts expired so close together was amazing. However, what if Scott Hall was dead set on making that WCW money, but Vince was somehow able to please Kevin Nash and get him to stay? The NWO is one of the biggest things to happen in pro wrestling. I know you could say it was Hogan turning heel that was the real spark, but would a Hogan heel turn have worked without Hall and Nash at his side? If only Scott Hall makes the jump it arguably has one of the biggest ripple effects in wrestling history. What happens to Scott Hall in WCW? Does Hulk Hogan still turn heel? Do they still do the NWO, but with different people, it has always sounded like this was an angle they wanted to do so maybe they would have just done it, but with a different trio. Also, what happens in the WWF if Kevin Nash stays? He was a badass heel and I could easily see him becoming a face during 1996, without changing his character too much. If WCW does not take off as they did with the NWO, would the Montreal Screwjob have even needed to happen? There are so many variables with this! I would love to know what you guys think would have gone down had only Hall made the jump in 1996? Can you think of an event that could have changed things as much as this,

I think we still get the NWO angle with Sting being the man in Nash's place.Have em turn heel at GAB then do the big Hogan reveal at BATB like it happened during the main event which would be just a tag match,Hall/Sting vs Luger/Savage.2 major heel turns like that in a span of only a month wouldve made that HUGE impact but could it have the same success?Thats the question.
As far as Nash goes in the WWF,I can see him feuding with HBK for a little big longer. If they did turn em face again later that year or by 97,feuds with Mankind and Vader wouldve been cool.

I don’t know I still don’t see Sting being open to the heel turn.

We all know the failure that was Sting as a heel in 99 was but if there was no Nash here in 96 and they really wanted to get this angle over,Rolling the dice on both Sting and Hogan would've been the way to go IMO
The impact on Hogan turning was monumental but can you imagine Sting turned as well? In this scenario this would be the one time I think they couldve pulled it off.
Plus times were changing and Sting was starting to drift away from the surfer look by this point so thats another factor they couldve pitched to em in creative meetings.

If it's only Hall I think WCW would still need to bring an outsider. Maybe look to ECW and see if Shane Douglas and Hall can work together or maybe bring back Sid.
A few things i see changing with Nash not going:
- Diesel beats Taker at Mania 12. If Nash is staying he needs the win more so than Taker.
- The Curtain Call is done differently or not at all.
- The Wolfpac doesn't happen.
- Goldberg's streak ends earlier because Hogan ends it.
- Finger poke doesn't happen.

Interesting topic...don't think it works without them both. Also the angle was formulated when he knew he had the 2 boys....don't think it was in the works with just Hall. Took shape & started to percolate when they realised they signed 2 of WWFs biggest names away.
But Nash was not on the fence lads...Everyone needs to understand that. This is revisionist history... peddled by Nash who one of the biggest liars in wrestling.
He said on numerous shoots the moment Hall told him "E is offering Sting Money" that he was "f*ckin outta here..."
If he didn't wanna go? He wouldn't have jumped on Hall & basically said "can I come too"
The shoots are the truth. The Outsiders one in particular.

I think if only Scott Hall went then WCW would have went harder after Bret and he would have been in Nash’s place

Not sure if they could still do the NWO without both Hall and Nash, I think they were equally important to that run. If they did continue with it, I could see either Luger or Savage being the second man with Hogan being the big reveal. Luger being the second man could make sense with them teasing Sting being the 3rd man only to have it still be Hogan. If Savage were the second man it may be to obvious that Hogan would be the number 3 guy. I still like the idea of making it mostly old WWF guys in the original NWO, makes it look like WWF is trying to invade WCW. I wonder, if Nash doesn't go, does WCW try even harder to get Bret Hart to be the second guy? They did offer him a contract around the summer of 1996, I wonder if they would have upped the amount to get him since Nash stayed.

nWo wouldn't have worked without the build involving 2 of WWFs top guys causing mayhem week in & week out teasing that Vince sent them...teasing the 3rd guy then it turning out to be the biggest WWF guy of all.
Its tough to understand...but if you were watching this weekly back in 1996-it was damn fine TV. I remember Hall turning up during Doll vs Mauler....& I was thinking "WTF" at the manner of the introduction. I was 16 but I knew damn well even then that this was a different kind of intro. When Nash turned up it was a Whoa moment....I was also shocked to see Hall. I ahdnt copped on that he had left yet....Bret had been off TV for longer than both men.
Both had last been seen @ IYH: Good Friends..better enemies. which wasnt long enough for fans to twig that bothe men were gone from WWF...so it worked really really well.
What an angle in fairness.

I think NWO would have still happened. Bischoff had it set out to take place. I am sure if Hall hadn't jumped, we would have seen Savage, Luger and Hogan become the heels with Sting to be the saving grace.
They already flirted with heel turns for Hogan and Savage in late 1995 when they wore all black and were together. Luger had already turned heel with the Dungeon of Doom, so I could see it being Hogan, Savage and Luger.
Hall coming over and then Nash joining him two weeks later was perfect!

If Hall went to wcw without Nash, there wouldn’t have been a nwo. Probably just the return of Diamond Studd. I remember back in 96 when I found out Nash was going to wcw predicting he’d be Vinnie Vegas again. Maybe as the outsiders they should have called themselves Vegas and Studd without the first name.

Thanks for all the replies, it is fun to read all your thoughts.
I thought of another ripple effect of this. If only Hall goes, maybe the curtain call doesn't happen and hhh wins the king of the ring!

If only Hall goes, maybe the curtain call doesn't happen and hhh wins the king of the ring! That could have been horrible... No Austin 3:16 moment, maybe no Austin/Bret feud, and if that doesn't happen does Austin get over to become the face of the company???

If there is no nWo, there's no Attitude Era. Austin wouldn't get to breakout with the Kliq still running things.

If we're saying that Hall alone comes and Nash stays in WWF then the easiest and smartest choice to align him with would be DDP. Page was just starting to get a little momentum but was also kinda in that "being held down" role. He could use that in a promo saying he tried to leave to go up north in '92 but WCW felt they the need to keep him in Atlanta and hold him down. Even when he did show how great he was (winning TV title, Battle Bowl etc) WCW never would give him the recognition he deserved. Then Hogan could turn and everything fall into place per norm.
I personally liked/would like the team of DDP & Hall better than Hall & Nash just because of their similar looks.

Everyone always says that Hall made a great debut & he did but logically it doesn't make sense. If 2 wrestlers are having a match & a stranger/invader shows up wouldn't your first reaction be go beat him up? Not clear the ring & give him space & time & a mike lol

But Nash was not on the fence lads...Everyone needs to understand that. This is revisionist history... peddled by Nash who one of the biggest liars in wrestling. I think there's SOME truth to Nash wanting to stay in the WWF. I'm sure if Vince had matched the offer he'd have stayed, even if WCW had the lesser schedule he had been there and they used him pretty badly the first time around. And he'd have been around his buddies had he stayed. But I'm sure he knew Vince would never match that offer so from that point of view his bags were packed. --------------------------------- To play devil's advocate had Nash decided to stay, I see Stone Cold as the biggest casualty here. If Nash stays there's no curtain call, IE no Austin 3:16, so HHH wins the KOTR. You've also got Nash's early 96 character as being very very close to what Austin would be doing from the KOTR onward. If Nash stays in the WWF, you lose Austin becoming the guy to save the WWF AND the exposure the NWO brought to WCW.
