So Glen Jacobs had a pretty long and great career. While he struggled with characters like Dr. Yankem and Fake-Diesel to start his career, he debuted as Kane in October of 1997 and never looked back. He’s had a lot of variations of the character and I was curious as to which version is everyone’s favorite.
My vote is for “Hardcore” Kane. While his debuts year was a close runner up, Kane from 2000-2002 is the most memorable for me. He was built like a tank, scary as hell, could do hurricanranas, and just an all-around bad-ass. The only thing that stinks from this era is that he never got the WWF Title for a second time (which to be fair was a stacked main event).
So, which version of Kane does everyone love?

97/8. Loved everything about the character that first year. His look, music,Paul Bearer as his manager, feud with Taker(storytelling at its finest)etc.
Overall though I enjoyed Kane up until 2003.

Kane was awesome during his debut up until the end of 98 then he got watered down in 99 and 00.....he was awesome when he reinvented himself in 01.....then got watered down again in 02......he reinvented himself again 03 and was awesome.....then I’d say 05ish to 10 he was ‘eh’ and then it just going downhill.

2000 - 2002 is my favorite. It featured some of his greatest looks and moments. Such as his 2000 return, Royal Rumble 01, WM 17, main event IC champion, SS 01 main event. And my favorite promo of his: "Why did I chokeslam my brother? I.... AM A MONSTER!!"

The moment he returned with the half mask in 2002 things took a turn character wise. He done the kanearoonie the first night back for example. Then came Katie Vick. He did stay very monstorous when he first unmasked but then he acted scared of the Undertaker before WM 20. Then there was the Lita pregnancy and marriage angle.... By 2011 he was dancing with Santino and trying to stop the Big Show from attacking Alberto Del Rio. Even though he was a face, this made no sense for his character at all.

absolutely his debut. I was 7 years old. legit thought Kane was crazy scary but awesome. Taker/Kane's feud was comic book worthy

A lot of people point to the Katie Vick angle as what killed the Kane character (and it mostly did), but the Kanearoonie was the first moment that I realized that Kane would never be the same. It totally went against his character to that point and it just seemed like we were watching Glen Jacobs having “fun” rather than watching the Kane character.

2000-02 for me. I enjoyed the character until He was unmasked and the Shane feud which he never fully recovered from. The first few initial weeks after Kane first unmasked were pretty great IMO. When he returned in the fall of 2002 I felt like the character had been super watered down. Unmasking him seemed to be the shot-in-the-arm the character needed until Shane showed up. Then it went back downhill.

There's just something about that 2000-2002 Kane that is just so cool to me. His mesh singlet, solid mask design and absolute size was great. I remember Kane being just an absolute brute force at that time as well. Slow chemical half masked Kane is a close second for me on the theme song and mask design alone.

Setting JR on fire, threatening to burn RVD, Tombstoning Linda etc. Good stuff.I'd tune in just to see what he was gonna do next. Then Shane came in and it all went south like you said.

It was always funny to me, even as a 12 year old, how Kane dominated RVD in their short feud, yet Shane was promoted as being on the same level as him. Then once the feud ended they tried making it look like Kane was a threat to Goldberg even though he just barely got by Shane. The two PPV matches with Shane weren’t bad but Kane’s credibility was dead. A guy who barely got by X-PAC a few years earlier was now on the same level as a psychotic Kane.

Shane should have had one match with Kane. ONE if they absolutely had to. In that match Kane should have obliterated him completely after Shane gained some kind f upper hand with weapons and mounted a spirited babyface comeback. Instead you had Kane struggle to beat Shane. Hot new heel derailed....
Shane would go on to do this again with Legacy. more dreadful booking that stopped the factions momentum dead.

The fact that Kane beat Shane at Unforgiven by not doing a move or something dastardly, but by Shane being stupid, jumping off a high platform, and missing, tells you everything about how bad that feud was for Kane. They couldn’t even let Kane pin him in either of their PPV matches. One was Shane taking himself out and not making it to the 10 count, and the other was Kane putting him in an ambulance.

Hardcore Kane was cool but I feel that his whole persona was watered down during that period. They cut the intro from his theme and I never really liked his tank top look. He was more like an ass kicking guy in a mask than a dark monster who terrorised his opponents.
My personal favourite was his 97/99 run. The whole aura of his character at that period was magical.
