Is it me or are we really lucky at the moment? Not only do we have Mattel producing great wresting figures, but also Jazwares, Super7, Boss Fight Studio, Storm, and now Zombie Sailor Toys are producing some incredible looking retro figures.
Also there was a time a few years back when Legends Figures were few and far between. We’d get the odd flashback in a wave. Now It seems that every sub line has Legends in them, not to mention the Legends line.
Just saying. We do like to complain on here but we’re pretty lucky in my opinion. It’s a good time to be a collector! Even if the whole world is going to crapat the moment!

I mean it's great that so many companies are in the game but a lot of people can't find figures in stores, some companies are pushing back dates, and pre orders are getting canceled from others.

In terms of variety of product, yes. But in terms of availability, its the worst. The toy store is extinct in the US and it's a scalper's market out there.

If it weren't a reseller's market then I would say yes. To me it isn't fun having to pay 3-4x mark-up for your favorite figs.
It is, however, great to see so much product coming to the "marketplace".

In terms of availability/ease of access, it might as well be 1996 before Jakks arrived. Yes you can get them online, but it will cost you. Stores get in one case and it's gone in a day. If that environment improves, then yes OP would be correct.

Double edged sword. The scalpers and a bit of manufactured scarcity have made figures seem way more valuable than they are and now others are coming in and adding to the problem is some respects.
As far as variety and quality thought, hands down the best era.

In terms of the sheer volume of figures available, absolutely. As we speak, you can have pretty much any major star over the past 35 years as a highly detailed and articulated figure. Peak 90's WCW and WWF standing right beside each other. Not to mention just about every major name from the indies over the past 20 year, plus favorites like more and more international stars. Give it 12 months and I'd all but guarantee we'll see even more legends from Jazwares/AEW, Super 7 start making some Japanese legends, and BossFight should have their line off the ground.
At the same time, the lines all have their respective issues. And I think those are absolutely worth talking about. Most stores shelves are empty or nearly empty more often than not. And figure availability online isn't much better right now.

It is for those who are willing to put a lot of time and/or money into finding and buying the figures. Things like distribution issues, scalpers, and figure swappers do dampen my enthusiasm for modern day collecting to some degree.

As others have said, when it comes to diversity of product, we're in a pretty decent time. There are companies putting out some stellar figures right now, there's no denying that and while we may not have anything like the Classic Superstars wave going on right now, there's a decent enough number of legends getting made by Mattel via the CE figures, and that's not even counting for other producers.
However, the fact that toy stores are extinct, combined with craptangular distribution, stacked on top of it being a scalper's market?
This is probably one of the worst times to be a collector. Sure, for people who have money to burn, you can get just about anything right now. But for those of us on a budget and whose wallets are quite shallow?
This bites.
I miss the Jakks era when I could just go to the store and browse the latest figs, pick out one I can like directly, and take it home. Or, in the case of say a box set, if needbe I can leave it there, save up some money, and come back three days later to pick it up and buy. The fact that the only real way to get figures in store for retail prices is to hunt Walmart and Target 3x a day, every day, and buy whatever you might possibly want on the spot (that's assuming there are any figures on the shelves to begin with)... it's for the birds. I have a friend who is casually into wrestling who tried for 2 months before Christmas to find some wrestling figures for her nephew. ANY figures. She couldn't find one. Not one single figure in this entire town, for two months before Christmas. (Ok, she did say there were a handful of Basic Rondas at Ollies, but this was for her Nephew who certainly didn't want her.) These kinds of distribution issues are the type of baloney to kill a collectors spirit.
So that's about it. Yes and no. Same as everyone else says.

For me personally yes. I pick up most things I want through preorder. Outside the RSE Punk, nothing I want on the secondary market is too pricey. It all works out well for me honestly.

They look very close to the originals with a higher level of detail that Mattel Retros. Hopefully we'll see an Owen Hart retro (probably with the Owen Hart Foundation logo on).

Mattel's look/feel very cheap, the clothesline guys were way too bulky, the skin tones weren't vibrant enough and some of the heads were atrocious (Diesel looked like Fake Diesel). They don't look even close to a hasbro when you put a retro next to a hasbro. Undertaker's probably the only good retro they ever made. ZST's look like they're at least trying to be consistent. |

Yeah Mattel lost me when they didn't do a sculpted singlet. That being said, if / when Mattel do bring back retros, I could see Steve wanting to go more detailed like these ZST's. More collectible with a higher price maybe (and hopefully thicker cards this time!)
