Yes and no. In terms of variety, there is so many wrestling figures to go around from many companies, big and small, from Mattel to Super 7 to Jazwares. Pretty much every wrestler you would know has a figure. The problem is the retail distribution is the worst it's ever been, with a majority of stores having very little or no product whatsoever, which is a massive problem. If there is nothing in the store to buy, at all, then the store and producer are not only losing out on a customer that day, but that customer feels let down that they didn't get the figure they wanted. While some things you can get online, you more than likely going to have to pay more for the figure, and shipping as well, which some may not want to do. If you have the money to spend, you don't really have to worry about it, you can get whatever you want. However, if you don't, then you are basically screwed.

I would say 2014 till now is absolutley the Golden Era for wrestling figure collecting.

For me personally the golden age of collecting was during the years of the Jakks CS run....having so many different legends made it had an awesome sense of nostalgia even when they were new on the pegs & even more so now

You had legends Mattel will most likely never get to make, widely available in stores at a $12.99 price. Now look at all the red tape Mattel has to go through to get legends figures out there. |

As much as Mattel says the lines are doing great they could be doing so much better. Stores worry about overstock so they don't order enough at a time, scalpers buy more than they need and fig hunters buy what they want. This leaves empty pegs for way too long disappointing collectors and casual fans/parents. Why would the latter consider getting into this line if they can never find anything at retail? This is massive lost revenue for the companies.

Yes; if stores were like how they were 10 years ago.
I remember when Walmart was on its game with getting new elites. I do miss the CS eras and RA era with nostalgia.
My Walmart had a Elite 22 I think? Brodus Clay sitting around for 5 years. They’re not stocked like they use to.
I always had the best luck with Kmart for classic superstars.
Toysrus would always be loaded; man Toysrus in 2009 was amazing.
Tons of spring ring play sets; Steel cage play sets; classic superstars; RA; DA; Deluxe Classics; Two packs; PPV RA line; micro aggression; micro aggression play sets; unmatched fury; build n brawl; vinyls; DVD selection. Best time to be a kid ever.
Collecting is tough now.
Target was good for RA; spring rings; RingRage; Micro aggression

No. Back in 1998/99 when you walked into TRU and KB and the shelves were full with complete sets of WWF Bone Crunching Action and WCW Smash and Slam. Those were the golden days!!!! Even the beginning / mid TTL.

It would be the best if you could find them in stores. Most stores are empty or close to it. No Toys R Us and Smyth's is in the UK.

Nothing beats 96-02 for me. My peak years as a kid when wrestling was life. Weekend trips to TRU/KB/Target was what would get me though the week in between episodes of Raw/Nitro/Smackdown

I think retro toy collecting as a whole. I can have HeMan displayed next to my Gi Joes, while I play with my XMen and set up my micro machines while my kids play the handheld Tiger Xmen video game we recently found in Target.
I think there’s a lot of money to be made in retro products. I’m glad to see straight rereleases of other lines and really love, with the exception of some wonky FX printing on faces, the Mattel line.

Like many others said for character variety between wwe lines and the aew figures it’s a great time, but retail is possibly the worst it’s even been for it lately, cases sell in minuets and then it’s empty shelves for sometimes 4-5 months at a time.

I disagree. Looks like Zombie is going for a more realistic sculpt and less cartoony and they don’t have the action. Really? Mattel's look/feel very cheap, the clothesline guys were way too bulky, the skin tones weren't vibrant enough and some of the heads were atrocious (Diesel looked like Fake Diesel). They don't look even close to a hasbro when you put a retro next to a hasbro. Undertaker's probably the only good retro they ever made. ZST's look like they're at least trying to be consistent. Agree with all of this except Taker being the only good retro (I really love the Brock). Also the ZST figures look very close detail-wise to the Ron Rudat concept art for the original Hasbros. Granted, Ron also did the concept art for the ZST figures but those Myers/Cardona figures look a lot closer to the spirit of what Ron was going for with the original line before the realities of manufacturing got in the way. I've also never understood the idea that Hasbros looked super cartoony, either. I think a lot of people let the Retro line fool them into thinking that's how the original line really looked, but the OGs are way more realistic looking than the Retros, especially when you consider how the guys they depicted actually looked in that era. |

having been big into figures ever since a young child, it really wasn't until I'd say 99-01 that figures started to look really good. And not just wrestling figures. ALL figures.
Before computers got to be the way to go with modeling and scanning, almost all figures looked like that. I have Xena, WWE, WCW, and Turtles figures from the 90s and most of them had some level of cartoon look to them. (And, for the record, my one April figure is from the 3rd movie, so she wasn't based on the cartoon. Still looks toy-ish). That was just what they had to work with back then. Actually, if you compare the Hasbros compared to what other companies were putting out in the early 90's? The Hasbros were pretty dang impressive. You look at a Savage figure? You know it's Macho. You look at a Sgt. Slaughter figure? Yep, that's definitely him. You don't even need the bodies for reference like you did many other 90s toys. I look at my Xena figures which were released around the turn of the millennium. If they weren't attached to the bodies, I wouldn't realize who they were.
Compare the Hasbros to, say, the BCA or early TTL figures? If I ripped the head off a Superstars 8 or worse, an early TTL Shane figure and handed it to my younger self who, despite being a fan of his, hadn't yet gotten into WWF figures? I would have no idea who he was. I've never once seen a Hasbro figure and been unable to recognize them as a character I already knew.
However, I've seen the retro line. It's... not the best. I would surf RSC and look at them and have to take in contextual clues to see who was who. I couldn't just look at a head and say "Yep, that's _____" The Retro figures tried to replicate Hasbros, and failed miserably. It just didn't work. Trying to replicate the magic turned out to just be unachievable. I hope for the collectors sake, that the Zombie figs do better.

The thing that I enjoy about the current state of wrestling figures is the scale. I remember back when Jakks was doing WWE and then they announced a Toy Biz line for TNA and everyone said "They can't be in scale! That'd be illegal!" Even if it's some of the figures who are more to scale with Hasbros, it feels like there is less of "Hey, here's a brand new line that only really works with itself" and is more of universal feeling where Mattel, Jazwares, Super7 and Boss Fight can all play together.
The characters are also a huge part right now, as we have so many names coming through NXT and if you're not in WWE or AEW, there are still other ways to get figures. I just hope the delays because of the pandemic don't hinder future series from Super7 and Boss Fight. There are more luchador figures I would like to see and I'd like to build a solid NJPW roster as well.

For the back catalog between Jakks and Mattel yes, though I feel the Mattel line has grown stale a bit and needs a refresh of sorts.

In all honesty, the more companies that are putting out figures in the Mattel scale the better.
I'm really tired of having to scroll through the 'bay listings for half-baked customs of people that Mattel will never make.
Then again, there's something to be said for "If you want it done to your personal specs, do it yourself"
