He was at the very beginning of his tenure with the WWF. Vince thought for sure that the fans would love Honky Tonk because everyone loved Elvis... He did wrestle for a bit as a good guy but the fans never got behind him and even booed him. I think there is a picture out there of Honky Tonk Man saving Hogan from a beat down with all the other generic babyfaces. Apparently, they figured Honky wouldn't get enough fan support and turned him heel. Like Nivro™ said, they did a thing where fans could call in and give a vote of confidence or no confidence for Honky, and the fans voted a no confidence which eventually turned him heel because the fans weren't behind him. I believe all this happened on Jesse's Body Shop Show. If I remember correctly, Honky Tonk Man said it was Jesse's idea to do the vote. That's what Jake claims. Honky Tonk Man denies it and says he and Jimmy gimmicked the hell out of the guitar. I'm not 100% sure because that shot looks stiff as hell. If the gif above continues to run you would see Honky even look at the guitar after the shot. Most guitar shots explode, this one didn't. Managed to find a clip of it. You can see Honky subtly check the guitar. After the next couple of shots, the back of the guitar is practically falling apart. To me, it looks like a freak accident that it didn’t explode on the first hit. I remember a magazine I used to get were adamant that it was real, I’m not so sure now. Yeah, I am not sure either. I think I remember hearing that the guitar that was brought to use for the segment with Jake was an actual guitar with heavy/thick wood. Whereas, most guitars you see used are made for hitting someone, they are more props made of particle board - i think. I think Jimmy and Honky did gimmick the guitar but, it was a heavy duty guitar and still caused some damage. But, I don't think it was on purpose.

I remember the Invasion storyline had a double turn. Originally WWE were the heels and The Alliance faces, then one week out of the blue they both switched sides.

I thought I remember reading that the guitar didn’t “break” because HTM hit him with it at the wrong angle where it was more of the edge of the guitar and not flush with the “breakable” back.

Kane and Triple H, when Hunter joined the corporation. Overlooked completely for some reason...one of the hottest heel turns ever and NOBODY seen it coming because Chyna had turned face earlier in the night when HHH beat Kane. So when HHH helped the despised Shane beat X-Pac later? It got f*ckin mega heat. the crowd were legit pissed because DX had JUST re-united and HHH wrecked it at arguably the height of their popularity. It got him the required heat to push on and beome th e#1 heel post WM. It was definitely a great angle. Though one question...didn't Chyna pretty much jump from face to face? Like, when she was with Kane for a short time, wasn't she basically a face? Then would be staying face by turning on Kane and re-uniting with Triple H?

not a double turn, but both turning at the same time.
in 87 when orndorff came back and wasnt sure if he was staying with heeenan or not (that was the angle) and savage was just starting to turn good at the same time with the save from hulk from honky/harts. and they both wrestled each other in Tuscon,AZ. it was kinda surreal seeing the crowd cheer and boo both of them lol!
