I feel like it was a total favour to him and a disservice to collectors. With only four figures per series there is no way it should have happened.

If we’re just going on the WWE product itself, no. But since he has a hardcore fanbase of action figure collectors it makes sense to me that he would get some preferential treatment when it comes to picking which guys to make. Especially when it comes to the Retro line, which is was targeted at the same type of people that listen to his podcast.

He deserved one more than any of us. But I didn’t/don’t care one way or the other because I only bought a few Retros. Mainly just the old school wrestler as well as Styles and Rollins.

If it hadn't have been him then it would've been another modern wrestler, so it's not like we lost USA Lex Luger, '93 Jerry Lawler, biker shorts Bulldog, Surfer Sting, or any of the other legends we wanted in the line because he was included instead.
I liked that he got one, though wish he'd have gotten a more interesting design. The action at least was a decent choice.

I had less of a problem with Ryder than a lot of the Retro choices. It was a good figure, and it was good for customs. And hey, at least he wasn't a jumper.

would anyone be asking this question if the line was still ongoing? using hindsight doesn't always work.
that being said, Yes he deserved a Retro, Hawkins did too and its a shame he never got one. I also wish the Ryder retro wasn't in the gear it was, and instead a more modern look.

If the line hadn't died soon after, this wouldn't even be an issue. In a world where we were on Retro Series 30 by now, nobody would give half a thought over Ryder getting a retro.
The only reason it's questionable is because the line got canned, and people wish the spot had gone to someone else. But fate can be cruel sometimes, and this is what you get.

Yes. He was at one point one of WWE's most marketable personas and he was basically the face of WWE figures for people on the roster. He definitely deserved one.

No issue with him getting one.
My real issue was the constant changing up of eras. Getting WCW sting and modern day Goldberg. Getting modern guys and retro Ryder and Bryan.
Getting attitude era Kane and new gen Taker.

Making Ryder made sense IMO. The retro line was essentially trying to serve two audiences: kids and collectors and Hasbro fans: Current roster for the former, legends and etc. for the latter. Ryder, while maybe on some level a “favor” also did appeal to the latter. While some people seem to have a massive hate on for him, he was the face of wrestling in WWE and the Mattel line. It completely made sense that he got a Retro in that regard.

Definitely not important, but many people miss the Retros and like to talk about it - especially the longer we go with Mattel/Walmart/Target/whomever keeping the line buried. One of the major talking points about the line was the choice of characters throughout so questions like this one will come-up occasionally for discussion. I don’t think there’s any more to it than that. |

No, his character never evolved. He’s still now basically doing the same schtick he’s been doing for years. Proves his 2011 run was a fluke. The spot should have been Foundation Anvil or Eddie Guerrero etc
