Can you remember the times when the Road to WrestleMania was terrible. The lack of buildup, change of plans etc. But when WrestleMania came, the show was more good than bad.

WM31 definitely. Brock Lesnar, Undertaker and Sting were in the top 3 matches on the show but they were barely on TV to help build the matches. Plus, the last Raw before Wrestlemania ended in a tug o war.

It’s been a while but I remember feeling like 16 was kind of a s#!tshow. Somehow Kane ended up tagging with Rikishi, randomly thrown together hardcore battle royal and tag matches all over the show, Main event changed like 3 times before the event. Even Foley I believe said somewhere in an interview that he thought he was done after No Way Out but got called back like 3-4 weeks before Mania, so thats how late in the game they were still changing their plans.

8 - Everyone and their mothers thought we were getting Hogan/Flair. It was even promoted as Hogan being the #1 contender to Flair on TV at one point.
13 - HBKs “injury” threw everything out of whack. We got Austin/Bret out of it, but the rest of the card was a cluster f***.
15 - We knew we were getting Austin/Rock, but Foley was still intertwined in their feud and Big Show was thrown in during the final few weeks of build as well (McMahon was in it as well). Way more pieces in that feud than there needed to be.
16 - The only singles match was The Kat/Terri. Outside of the main event and ladder match, the rest of the card seemed to be randomly thrown together with little to no build.
22 - Rey/Kurt/Orton still stands out as such a randomly thrown together match. MITB had Flair and Finley of all people. A Benoit match wasted on JBL, and a McMahon street fight that just didn’t have the same appeal as past McMahon street fights with Austin, Taker, and Hogan (Eddie’s death and Batistas injury hurt the card but it still could have been booked better).
25 - Outside of the main event and Taker/HBK, does anyone even really remember the rest of the card?
29- Cena/Rock 2 was just going through the motions at that point. Del Rio/Swagger was a world title match nobody asked for. And Jericho was wasted putting over Fandango (which wouldn’t have been bad had Vince actually pushed him).
31- Roman/Brock interested nobody, and Taker literally showed up zero times to build his match.
32 - The WWE forced Roman/HHH on us when it was being more rejected than Roman/Brock from the year before. Then Dean had to legit carry two feuds going into WM cause Roman got hurt, but instead of listening to fans and giving Dean the ball, he was treated like an afterthought. Rest of the card is forgettable outside the women’s title match.

Didn't enjoy 2011. The Road to WrestleMania's main feature was the Lawler Cole feud.

Honestly for me it's easier to remember the years that I enjoyed the build up to Wrestlemania more so than the years I didn't.
I remember I loved the build up to Wrestlemania 19 and 20. Everything from Royal Rumble - Wrestlemania those two years were incredible TV on both shows.
As for ones I didn't care for?? The build up to Wrestlemania 2000 (16) definitely was bad as what was mentioned above.

Has to be 32, which is funny because it’s the first I attended. No one cared about Hunter vs Roman, Jericho vs AJ had just been done twice, Shane vs Undertaker had all kinds of logic problems, LON vs New Day were feuding over what exactly?, half the ladder match just seemed in there just to be on the card, and Dean being thrust into a match against Brock when it was being built as Brock vs Bray was boring as hell. The women’s match was the only thing that was built well imo.

I thought the Build to WM 19 was kind of meh, but the show was just so amazing it didn't matter in the end or looking back it all is way better then I remember feeling at the time.
Also I didn't like the Build to 29 - although the show wasn't bad, they just made choices for matches I did not want and it felt lack luster till the show itself.

If I'm honest, I feel like the Road to Wrestlemania has been pretty underwhelming for the past 5 or 6 years now. 31 cemented the benchmark of 'We no longer need to put time and effort into the build as Wrestlemania sells itself', which they had slowly begun rolling out from around 28/29. The reliance on video packages, pre-taped promos, and no real firm interaction has kind of got us to where we are now. Everything just seems like complete filler nowadays. It's as if they think that winning the Rumble, and then headlining an already sold-out Wrestlemania is all it really needs, and have disregarded what positive effect a strongly booked 'Road' can do in terms of giving guys that extra bit of momentum and rocket heat heading into the Event.
It partially of course started deteriorating when the likes of Undertaker, Triple H and Brock Lesnar were only used sparingly in builds, due to the simple attitude of 'Their name is on the Card, the Show will sell'. It became a rinse repeat formula of video packages, in-ring promos with zero interaction and a lack of things getting personal with their feuds. I have to look back to the likes of Wrestlemania 21 with the downfall of Evolution, or the Authority and Daniel Bryan storylines to really be their last serious stock put into the big money matches. Now, the only time we really get any form of juice, is when the Creative clearly have no long term direction or idea of where a Championship or big Match is heading (e.g. this years WWE Championship, Undertaker vs Shane McMahon), and thus we get a bit of a hotshot situation which is at least interesting just to see where things are headed.

Bad build, bad show, and the one memorable moment was Ryder winning the IC match because it was so unpredictable. The undercard was badass. I love a good multi-man ladder match to open Mania for the IC Championship or Money In The Bank so that was a treat. The Styles/Jericho match was damn good, lets not forget how epic seeing AJ at Mania was in 2016. The New Day were at their peak at Mania 32. I'm not even into women's wrestling but the triple threat with Charlotte, Becky, and Sasha was great. It's a B+ show that happens to have a D- main event. |

I grew up on NWA/GCW and never liked WWF. When the former switched to WCW I went there instead of RAW. Then I got into ECW until it died. Now I'm AEW and NXT.
All that said ... I've never "got" WM. Never understood trying to make it the Superbowl of wrestling PPVs. Never got the granddaddy of them all, etc. Seeing 50k+ fans, famous singers/actors, huge stadiums, etc. never did anything for me. It's all just another card to me. The only WWE PPV I look forward to is the RR.
So yeah, it'd be all of them, lol. MAYBE MAYBE back in the day when you had just four PPVs, WM could seem like a big deal. Now it's just a bloated PPV.

I think one of the issues for nearly a decade now is that the WWE focuses on pushing the brand rather than individual stars at this point. This has helped to kill the “granddaddy of them all” phrase they attach to WM as the main events just don’t live up to they hype. When we were getting main events like Hogan/Andre, Hogan/Macho, Hogan/Warrior, Bret/HBK, Austin/Rock, and even matches like Benoit/HBK/HHh, Batista/HHH and Cena//Rock, they helped sell the idea of WM being a “Super Bowl” event. These matchups had a great build, but also the stars seemed larger than life (some more than others but all stars in their own rights). For the past decade, Vince has had an over reliance on using past stars and pushing the idea that “this is the WWE, it will sell on its own.” Nobody in their right mind would ever say Roman/Brock or Roman/HHH had the build or star-power feeling that the previous matches I listed did. Because of the lack of star power and over-focus in the brand, WM comes off to me as another monthly PPV, just more bloated than others. |
