I know there's not "long term" anything anymore but something that was on my mind today was how Triple H's career actually follows a linear narrative.
If you start in the DX days, and go from a kayfabe perspective, Triple H begins as an anti-authority anarchist who drugs the bosses daughter into marrying him. Then, he actually falls for her and through this begins to align more and more with authority figures when opportune to do so. We have a slight detour with evolution, but if your favorite wrestler returned and you had the opportunity to create a new group with him as tribute you would too. It could even be argued that the inauthenticity felt by Triple H being in the Flair role is what pulled him back towards finding himself again. This brings us to the reform of DX, which serves as a representation of one's midlife crisis - he tries to be what he was in his glory days but eventually comes to terms with the fact that you cant recreate that magic. Our story of Triple H ends with him fully transitioning to a mature, yet hardened, authority figure who has settled into a career to take him to retirement.
Thus, Triple H becomes the same authority he rebelled against, but with added knowledge and experience of life on both sides to make him a tough-parent towards his "kids" in NXT
Yeah this is one of the more extreme examples, and most of this wasn't intended or planned, but even so, are there other examples of wrestlers having long term character development that actually forms a through-line?

Long read but if I’m following correctly I’m assuming you could also say Kane and Taker. Deadman to Bada$$ to Deadman, Masked to Unmasked (03) to Masked (11) to Unmasked (authority) to Masked (final run).

Yeah I probably made this thread look as unappealing as possible, but yeah I would say Taker is another good example. Kane has been super inconsistent but in general terms you could chalk up Kane's run as a monster becoming a man.

I feel like, using a bit of narrative prose like this, you could connect the dots with the story of just about anybody who a) stayed in one place for a significant amount of time b) generally enjoyed a modicum of forward traction.

John Cena went from rapper to US Marine enthusiast to superhero to being choked out of this realm by a dreadlocked clown.

I like what they're doing with Otis at the moment. He had it all. A hot girl, a best friend, and the MITB contract. Top of the world. First he lost the girl. Then the friend and the briefcase on the same night. He never had closure. Now a manipulating Chad Gable is taking advantage of Otis' vulnerability to convince him to become more aggressive. Eventually Otis will see the light.

WWE for sure lacks it; without the total of kayfabe on the screen.
But; Randy Orton is one of my favorites. This cocky upstart kid; hits the gig of his life with Evolution; becomes the Legend Killer; Breaks free after being betrayed; struggles to truly find his way back; Rated RKO formation; the start of the cold calculated Orton which is the Viper and the Age of Orton stuff; Orton forms Legacy; his own faction to keep himself at top like Triple H did and a Vendetta to destroy Triple H and the McMahons; Babyface Viper after destroying his relationship with legacy; Apex Predator and Reunion with Authority showing Orton now as this well established star who sits at the top ; Infiltrating the Wyatts Showing at what lengths and how calculated he is to accomplish his goals; and Orton growing into the Legend Killer again; but also being a legend himself. Where we see the calculated nature of Orton; but also that brash arrgorgance come out with it. I think Orton's had great growth.
Triple H one was fantastic.

I WISH actual long term booking/character development was a thing these days. But you’re correct, mate. Helmsley lived long enough to see himself become the thing he fought against. Honestly I think he’s always been a power hungry opportunist and just bought in to the institution at the soonest opportunity.

Miz has stayed consistent his whole career in a sense he cannot win matches without help. His entire run he has had someone else with him in order to get wins. Layla, Morrison, Alex Riley, R-Truth, Mizdow, Maryse, Miztourage, Shane, & Morrison again.
On his own, he would get squished by most of the roster in no time at all. But with people by his side, he has won championships upon championships. He is reality star turned Tough Enough contestant turned Diva search host turned kicked out of the locker room web show host turned straight to DVD movie star turned reality show star again. All while having people watch his back during wrestling matches in between.
It may be argued that even fans might think they could take him in a match. However, they would not win because either A they are not wrestlers or B Miz will have help or C a mix of both.

Bret and Shawn are both good examples of characters who's career impacted their character development fundamentally over time.
