I mean, the WWE has signed two billion-dollar deals in the last two years, one with FOX, the other of course with NBC. Dwayne Johnson has a show on primetime television all about the business, on the same network that bought their streaming service. Even though it's not directly related to product success, acceptance in society is on the rise, as a President of the United States just left office who is a WWE Hall of Fame member, the mayor of Knox County, Tennessee is a multi-decade WWE veteran and legend, and the former CEO of WWE also recently served in the Cabinet of the aforementioned former President of the United States. Dave Batista and John Cena are also climbing the Hollywood ladder, continuing to raise awareness for the business every step of the way. AEW holds prime television real estate on a Turner network, crossing over with celebs like Tyson and Shaq non-stop, and giving some form of competition the breath of life for the first time in a while. No, we aren't in a second Attitude Era - and I know not everything mentioned above automatically correlates to monetary success or high viewership (though some of it certainly does) - but couldn't this be the hottest era since?
Of course, the surefire method of measuring the accuracy of this statement (well, technically I asked a question, but you understand what I'm saying) would be to compare current ratings to ones from eras since 2002, and when COVID lets up, gates as well. I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers these days are pretty hot, even if journalists like Meltzer (who I do like overall) seem to always report negative news as far as these numbers and statistics are concerned.

no. your average person thinks wrestling is "fake" and doesnt watch it. nothing will be as hot as the 80s with hulkamania and 90s with nwo/stone cold and it will never be the same again.

no. your average person thinks wrestling is "fake" and doesnt watch it. nothing will be as hot as the 80s with hulkamania and 90s with nwo/stone cold and it will never be the same again. Criticism toward the predetermined nature of the business was prevalent during Hulkamania and Attitude, too, though. |

no. your average person thinks wrestling is "fake" and doesnt watch it. nothing will be as hot as the 80s with hulkamania and 90s with nwo/stone cold and it will never be the same again. It wasnt even common knowledge then that it was a fixed show. That really didnt leak until the very late 1980s. The attitude era was a beast of its own and cant be duplicated...see ECW for an example. |

Check out other sources besides Meltzer. Keller, Fightful, and Wrestlenomics are all great for giving additional info.
WWE is having their most profitable time ever, but that has nothing to do with the product. Fox/UFC fell through, and WWE was there with a show and got that same money. NBC Universal needed to fill their streaming service & library and made a deal with WWE, even though the WWE Network is a failure based off of their own initial projections.
Make no mistake, WWE is failing upwards and their business success has more to do with bidders being desperate for content.

Try to find the Al Snow shoot where he talks about the predetermined nature of the business (one of the best trainers in the business, mind you); in it, he has a story about telling his family about his goal to be a pro wrestler in the 1970s, and the family replies with, "Isn't that all fake?" It's been known for a while. |

Like I said, I don't know what the gate and ratings statistics are, and they may very well be inferior to the Attitude Era. Regardless of the background reasoning for the incredible billion-dollar deals made over the last few years, they still happened. Vince may or may not be in trouble when those deals end (and they could be extended multiple times), but that's for the future, and now is now. I'm sure all across corporate America we could find similar situations, occurrences where companies succeeded because of a few lucky breaks. Doesn't matter, the success was still reality at the end of the day. |

WWE makes more money now, but from fewer people. It's an unsustainable business model.
The product is laughably bad, and there is a lack of star power to the extent that even guys like Undertaker are publicly critical. Vince is forced to rely on 45-50+ year old stars of bygone eras like Edge and Goldberg to try to drive ratings.
I would say that there has never been a lower point in WWE history, but that will continue to be the case year on year unless there's a seismic shift in both our culture, and in product quality.
WWE/WWF is a case of "it used to be good". And the "used to be" part is getting further and further behind us.

Pretty much every weekly wrestling show on TV has been godawful so far this year, save for a few episodes of NXT. Takeover: Vengeance Day has been the only major-ish show so far this year that I've enjoyed from top to bottom.
