In terms of kayfabe, was it ever explained how or why Bret got put into the match despite losing to Owen?

Bret and Luger co-won the Royal Rumble that year and the match for main event was set up for Bret/Yoko/Luger. They weren't doing triple threat matches at that time so they had a coin flip to see who would face Yoko first at WM, and Lex won. So, to be fair, Bret needed an opponent to face so both guys in the final match (which turned out to be Bret and Yoko) would wrestle twice that night. There wasn't a stipulation set up for the Bret vs Owen match, it was just a grudge match to continue their feud that began at Survivor Series 1993. It actually worked out well for the storyline going forward, since Owen beat Bret in the opening match at WM, Owen used that to say he deserved to be the number 1 contender. Then he won the KOTR 94 tournament and was granted the number 1 contender spot and face Bret for the world title at Summer Slam.

I liked how at the end when Bret wins the belt and is celebrating in the ring with all the babyfaces you see Owen come out and stare em down. They want em to come in the ring to celebrate his brothers big win but in the end doesnt.Owen was on a high to begin the night but Bret once again outshined em by winning the big one.
Great storytelling all around during this feud.

Owen was so obnoxious following his win over Bret, only to turn right back into the jealous little brother by the end of the night since in his mind, Bret managed to one up him yet again.

The way the match ended kind of sucked but really how can you logically get Yokozuna down for a pin unless he does it to himself when you're 300-400 pounds lighter than him? I love the ending to the match though. Bret truly believed this was all real and if this was a TV series with an end of a season that match celebration would be it. I look at the Raw the next night as the beginning of the next season. The was first time they did a darkened entrance with the neon logos of guys on the ring mat and it just seemed like a whole new season.

Yea I mean they even addressed Owen not being the number one contender after mania by saying he wanted to win the king of the ring to follow up Brets win the year before.

The way they ended that night, with Owen by the entrance with the look of disgust on his face, as the faces put Bret on their shoulders was just great, and simple story telling. You have Owen starting the night, thinking he's finally gotten out of Bret's shadow by beating him clean in the ring, only to have the night end with Bret's shadow cast back over him with the title win.

I loved too that Owen could have lost every match to Bret for the rest of his career, but it didn't matter because just one time Owen beat Bret and it was their first match they ever had with each other. That too was great story telling.
I think the only other time Owen beat Bret in a match was in 1997 in the European Title tournament.

He didn't cheat to win the match, which added to that story, of Owen being out to prove he was better than Bret, and he was more than just Bret Hart's little brother.

I can't recall if the coin toss winner had the choice of going first or if the toss was to see who goes first but Lex with another sketchy celebration. I mean personally it felt like going 2nd was the way to go.

I don't think that there was an option, the winner of the coin toss faced Yoko first and the person who lost would face the winner at the end of the night, and, they would have to face another person earlier in the day to make it fair.
