So Lawler was gone from the WWF from February to November 2001, calling it a day in protest after Stacy Carter had been been let go. I’ve noticed, however, WWF was still using MCW (Memphis Championship Wrestling) as a developmental during that time, featuring Angle, Triple H, Benoit, Regal, and probably others in matches. As we know, MCW was the 2001 name of what used to be USWA, and was the old Memphis territory before that. My question is, how did this work out with Lawler gone? I always assumed he was the Danny Davis equivalent (owner of OVW) for MCW, so I would have thought Lawler leaving would have disconnected MCW from the WWF. Maybe he was more like the Cornette by that point, not owning MCW but just running it, and his resignation would’ve just resulted in his being replaced down south? Or maybe he continued to own MCW and cooperate with WWF, and only left his announcing gig? I know he did work XWF during his time gone. Anyone know what exactly happened with Lawler and his connection to WWF through MCW specifically during his time gone?

I'm pretty sure this turned into a bit of thing. If I remember right, Lawler was working with PPW while with the WWF. I'm pretty sure Lawler didn't own either after screwing over that one guy on the USWA deal.
He left the WWF and kept working for PPW. Then PPW and MCW started co-promoting shows together, WWF didn't like that so they took all of the rings they were using because they owned them, which basically shut both of them down. Or something like that.

I guess sometime in say 2000, WWF switched from using PPW as a developmental to MCW, either that or they had both and just dropped PPW. When Lawler initially left I guess it would've been no issue until PPW started working with MCW; that happening meant Lawler's promotion was working with WWF's developmental. Probably had some issues up until Lawler returned in November. Wonder how he found time to appear in XWF. That promotion and WWA in Australia were the only alternatives before TNA started up.

I always wondered if Lawler getting "fired" was a work.
I couldn't see Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler doing commentary together during the Alliance vs. WWF angle. Having Paul Heyman who was a member of the Alliance fit the whole scenario then with Jim Ross who was a WWF guy.
It just seems odd that Jerry Lawler returns the night on Raw after Survivor Series when Paul Heyman gets "fired" because he was a part of the Alliance.

There was some definite bad blood on both sides, Lawler went and gave out people's contact info on some web show he did after he was released.
I don't think it was a work. There's no way that Vince would let him go work for XWF. He signed away Hennig so they couldn't build around him.

On JR’s podcast he said Vince had absolutely no ill will towards Lawler and actually respected that Lawler stood up for his wife. Vince basically had the attitude that he was gonna go cool off and would have a job whenever he wanted it back.

I enjoyed the brief run JR/Heyman had in the booth in 2001 but man it was great to see King return home after SSeries that year.
Like JR said that night''All is right with the world!''

JR and King were so great because you could tell they genuinely liked each other, I would say even more than Gorilla and Bobby and I would say Gorilla and Jesse were simply friends at work.

Maybe because of how I perceived the age difference I saw Gorilla and Bobby as friends while King and JR seemed more like brothers with JR obviously being the more serious one and faithfully married while King was more of a cut up and goal oriented towards multiple women. King and JR seemed similar in age, as they are while Gorilla seemed much older than Bobby even though it's maybe a 5-6 year difference. I know it tore Bobby up with Gorilla's passing and still young too and not sure how much longer he lasted with WCW but he probably phoned it in even more after that.

Ross and Heyman is my favorite commentary combo and it’s unfortunate it was replaced with the same Ross/Lawler rehash for the next few years as both men continued to get worse and worse at their jobs as time went on.
