I used to take my small children on hunts. Looking for hof2 at different Targets I had a couple memorable interactions. Brickseek went up and I took my 4 year old son to the service desk to ask them to get me the cases from the back. They had a full set of hof2 visible in the on hold area. There were at least two employees and a manager and only me for customers. They said they wouldn’t get the stock from back and I was mad so I turned to my son and spoke clear enough for them all to hear. “Sorry buddy, they don’t want to try and help you right now”. Then we turned and walked out but I could tell they were feeling bad about it.
Another day brickseek again. Went to target for opening with my son and 6 year old daughter. The kids were very used to walking out with nothing or if anything just the one figure from a set we were after. We went straight to wwe toys and the full set was there. We also never hunt with a carriage or basket, and I immediately start handing my daughter one figure and then the next. She got very excited to be handed the first figure and more when she got the second one. Then I had to give my son the third one and fourth but I’ll never forget the shock in their little eyes. It was happening too fast and they were so small they couldn’t easily carry them. We went to the checkout and were probably the first customer. The older cashier lady says “what have we got here?!, wrestlers??!” She looks at my kids and says “do you know these wrestlers?” My daughter says “yes, this is hulk hogan, and Yokozuna.” The lady holds up Eddie. My daughter says “that’s Eddie Guerrero!” Then she had a little harder time remembering Tito but got it when I started saying the name a little. The lady says “have you actually met any of these wrestlers?” My daughter said no. And then the lady says to me quieter “well couldn’t meet Eddie because he’s gone now unfortunately”.

OK I have one. My daughter and I drove to Columbus to attend the first ever NXT show outside of FL. While there we stopped at Target and HOF series 1 was just hitting stores. I asked someone to look to see if they had some in the back and he was super nice and helpful, went to the back, and came back with a case of em. I grabbed Warrior and Slaughter and text a friend to see if there were any he wanted. He didn’t get back with me right away so I told the Target employee that’s all I needed and he took the rest of the case back to the back. After purchasing the two figs I wanted we went across the street to Best Buy to look around. While there I finally get a reply from my friend saying he wanted Trish. We return to Target and couldn’t find the employee that helped us but did see another and explained we were just there and got a couple figures and the other guy took the rest back and politely asked if she could go back and get them because there is another one I need. She tried saying what’s on the shelf is all they have. I told her I know that’s not true because I was just there a few minutes ago and they had the figures in the back, I got what I needed, and the guy put them back. This went back and forth a few times until she reluctantly went back to pretend like she was checking. She came back and said they weren’t there. I’m extremely frustrated now but I just say OK and walk away. I then try to find the guy who originally helped us walking all over the store not being able to locate him. After a couple times walking over the entire store we find him stocking shelves in the grocery section. Explain the situation and he gladly goes back to retrieve the case, I get Trish, and made sure I found that girl to show her that I was able to get it without her help prior to purchasing it. This is the reason store employees hate collectors. You are always a ray of sunshine.

This is the reason store employees hate collectors. For asking them to do their job? Arguing with employees rather than accepting their answer and moving on. Then feeling the need to go back and “show them you were right”. They’re toys.

If i happen to be in a store, and see figures that i know people are hunting for, i put them on Mercari and price it at only $10 more then i paid, with free shipping. i do it as a service, not to make money

Wasn’t an argument. I politely asked her to go get something for me that I knew they had and where it was located. And regardless if it’s a toy, pair of pants, set of dishes, deodorant, patio furniture, or anything else they sell there, if a customer needs assistance, then an employee of the store should do everything they can to assist them. That’s what they get paid to do. If they don’t want to be bothered by customers, then maybe they should pick something else than working in retail.

We got someone asking if they should open figures and we got a thread about talking about the times we used to be able to find shlt. That Mania to SDCC dry spell will do it.

I’ll give you my most recent story:
I went to Walmart today and found zero elites on the shelf. I have 4 different Walmart’s in my area, and I have not seen 1 elite at Walmart in 2021.

I was an avid hunter for like 20 years. Here are a few:
As a young kid walking into TRU and finding tons and tons of LJNs, more than I had ever seen. Jake, Duggan, OMG, so very many. I bought Duggan the first day. We went back over the weekend to get Jake, but he was gone, so I got Bam Bam.
A year later, same TRU, first time I ever saw Hasbros. My Uncle got me Hogan and DiBiase. Great memory.
Wacky Toy Liquidators that was at some remote outlet mall in the middle of nowhere. They had several MOC LJN Honky Tonk Man and several MOC Hasbro Nasty Boys. I’d never seen either in stores, but I’m pretty sure this was after Hasbro had already lost the license. Bought neither. Still kicking myself 25 years later.
Different Toy Liquidators, I think this is early Hasbro days, maybe Summer 91 or 92. There’s a big box of loose LJN Haku figures next to a peg of MOC LJN Rudes. I swear I remember the Rudes having green tights and white boots (like the proto pic), but I’m sure I’m misremembering. 30 years later, still kicking self. If I could go back in time, damn I want all of the stuff from the last two stories.
KB Toys - the 3 for 10 Hasbro clearance. Just bins and bins of hasbros. Yellow cards, red cards, blue cards, oh my!
KB Toys, dying days, Erie PA. The associates didn’t give a f*ck anymore. There were several B people (myself included) allowed into the stockroom to look through the cases. Snagged a 1/500 Jakks Kofi, and like 6 other figs.
Toy Planet in the UK (Derby), first sighting of Legends 1, Elite 2, and Elite 3. Same mall had a different store with one of the last RA series. There was a Goldust and a balloon-headed Cena that I specifically remember.
Forbidden Planet UK - this is the only time I saw the final CS series. I’d given up by then and moved on to the Classic Doctor Who figs.
Switzerland - Mattel 2 packs were ridiculously expensive. Like 70 dollars expensive. Singles weren’t much better at 45. Madness.
January 1, 2010. Feeling VERY worse for wear, as I was briefly back from the UK to see my dad and friends. The night before was NYE (obviously), and I was out with my friend; we were $#!tfaced. Rallied first thing in the morning. Two TRUs nearby. Go to the close one first (BADLY hungover), they have the basics. Picked up Kofi, HHH, and Bourne. Off to the second. They have the elites and two packs. Got Edge, Taker, Rey, and Beth/Santino. Went home and spent the rest of the day violently ill. That was the last time I had tequila. Stay away from the firewater, kiddos.
Fred Meyer, Oregon. Elite 18 was hitting (I think. The series with AJ Lee, Liz, and Ryback). Walk in to find Elite 4 Finlay, and elite 5 Chavo and the variants (Swagger with the singlet on in the package, Sambo jacket Kozlov).Still have the Koz MOC, but bought all.
Toys R Us, dying days. Just wistfully looking around, taking photos, drinking it all in (maaaaaaaaaaan). I went to every nearby TRU in the weeks leading to the close, and kept buying things I didn’t need just because I knew I’d never have that feeling again. Last purchase was the first Elite Sami Zayn. Also bought the Raw ring with the exclusive Goldberg, and many other things, but I distinctly remember Sami being the last.
As you might have deduced from this post, figure hunting was a passion of mine for a very long time. This is just a drop in the bucket for stories (although these are probably the best). These days hunting isn’t nearly as fun with nothing around...and being in my late 30s of course. I still check every store with a toy section just for old times sake.

Ok, this is gonna sound pretty incredible, but as far as I know it’s true.
There was this friend of mine back in 2003 who was a web designer. Early days of the internet and all. Anyway, according to him, at one point he was involved with WCW and, with the WWF recently purchasing the company, still talked with the now WWF superstars. I didn’t believe him for crap. No fn way. This guy had stories that there was no chance were true...
Until they started coming true. Back then, with the internet being as young as it was, the dirt sheets seemed a little smaller than they are now. And this guy would tell me stories that I’d never heard any wind of but later would hit the dirt sheets and the internet as having really happened.
So, against my better judgement, I started to believe some of his stories.
Anyway, on to the toy hunt part.
This guy was dating my very good friend. And there was a WWE show in town that weekend. They were headed out and about so I asked them if they could stop by Toys R Us to do some figure scouting. I knew they had no money (they were extremely poor at the time) and my friend was super bummed about not being able to afford tickets to the show. They agreed to stop by TRU and I guess when they were in the figure aisle they ran into Gregory Helms. He was happy to see the guy (who, again, he knew from his time with WCW) and asked him if he was coming to the show. They both said no, but Helms shook his head and said, “The hell you aren’t”.
He got them tickets. When I got back to the house that night, they were so excited to tell me all about Shane’s cage match against Kane. (I was unable to attend due to prior commitments. Still mad about that.) I couldn’t believe that they had gone but my friend told me what happened and, well, to this day I wonder what might have been had I just gone with them to TRU.
Again, it sounds farfetched, but considering this guy knew things in 2003 that would make Dave Meltzer wet his pants, I sort of have to believe it. (Note: NOT getting into any of the stories though, mostly because it was 20 years ago and I’ve forgotten all of them. Except one. And that one I'm not repeating here. I’ve mentioned it elsewhere before, but with the context contained herein I don’t feel comfortable attaching it to this story. Sorry.)

Years ago when E12 was starting to hit retail. I stopped at Target after my college classes. I asked the employee if they had anything in the back. The lady brought out a case of Elite 12 where I got Kane and Papa Shango. It made my day

I once found an Elite 12 Kane at a random Target outside of Houston. He was the only elite on the shelf.
Finding the full shippers on DOD 1 and 2 was fun. A throwback to the days of old when you could go in most stores and actually have a selection.
The nice Target employees who will actually go and check to see if they have an item in stock, instead of the usual "what is on the floor is all we have" BS. The nice ones have supplied my collection with HOF, HOC, Legends, etc.
Also, I miss TRU.

Lots of them...mostly during the Jacks RA days though. Most recent was finding full set of Flashback series with Harley, Austin, Steamboat, and Jake in Late Fall of 2018.

1/1/2010 first official day of wwe Mattel launch, going out with my buddy hitting a bunch of stores, finding e1, bp1, basic 1, and the wrestlemania heritage series, and after about 1/2 the day my buddy called it quits and went home, I decided to keep going, drove to a random Kmart like 40 mins away and found a fesh case of BP 2, I remember being so pumped finding that red Morrison as he was one of my favorites at the time.

Not Mattel WWE but was hunting for Marvel Legends Big Time Spider-Man. I found the Future Foundation version several times but never the black and green suit. The wife and I were out and I say that I’m gonna stop at this Walmart and check. She’s annoyed and goes “this Walmart sucks, they’re not gonna have it.” She stays in the car while I go look. I come back with the figure telling her that’s why you should always check and never assume a certain store will not have it.

TRU only had a B1G1 free sale one time best to my knowledge during Jakks. Went that Sunday afternoon of the sale starting and rebought all the figs I had bought there in the last 30-60 days whatever their policy was. Was a big flipper back then, not at all now.
Took back all the new figs I bought with the old receipts for the same items. And took back like 40 figs. Got like $500 back. Manager was pissed and said I was throwing off his inventory. K, Boomer...

K, Boomer... I remember back in the day this was around 2007, one toyrus had a huge clearance sale. And my dad bought almost all the figs from the clearance section. They had so many different RA Rey's like the silver surfer and treacherous trios. He bought like 10 unmatched fury's that jakks Hogan with the wwf kids belt, also a bunch of deluxe aggressions still have em all in box.
