Last night on Raw, Cedric Alexander fought Shelton Benjamin and it was a good match. But during it, I was thinking back to how it used to be exciting for ex tag teams fought each other.
Perfect example... Tito Santana vs. Rick Martel.
I don't care if it was 1989, 1990, 1991, if it was on Wrestling Challenge, SNME, or a MSG house show, knowing that Santana vs. Martel was gonna take place was exciting!
What do you think made ex tag team partners wrestling each other in the 80s and even early 90s seem more exciting than what we see today??
Is it that tag teams don't have the longevity today like they had 20 years ago??
Is it that we just enjoyed it more then because we were younger and believed that some of it was real??
Nothing against Shelton and Cedric. Two amazing athletes, but I wasn't excited to see them compete with each other like I used to get for Santana vs. Martel.

Too many tag teams in recent years just break up for no reason after a few months. How are people supposed to care?

Even when it fizzles out or doesn't quite deliver, a team with any sort of longevity imploding has a certain amount of built-in draw for me. A lot of the mid to late 90s stuff is kind of a blur of crash TV to me, but I still remember that first wallop Scott Steiner gave Rick when he joined the nWo. |

This talk of tag teams breaking up and feuding makes me wish we got to see the dream 60-minute broadway that would have main-evented Wrestlemania - Bushwhacker Luke vs. Bushwhacker Butch.

I think it is a combination of the points you listed. Also, time flies faster when your older, so maybe it seems like teams don't stick together as long as they use to. You example is a great point to that, Martel and Tito were only a tag team for a little over a year. They came together in the summer of 1987 and split up the following year when Martel left the company for a bit. They kind-of got back together just before WrestleMania 5 in 1989, but that was just to split them up so they could feud. But you are right, it does seem like teams don't stay together as long as they use to. I mean, the Rockers were together for 5 years before splitting, the Steiner were together for 8 or 9 years before splitting. |

The last tag team breakup that had people invested was Team Rhodes Scholars and they squandered that. Neither were elevated. It was a feud over MITB that went nowhere with no one benefitting. Soon after that both were paired up with other people. There are never any long term plans when they split up a team. They do it cuz they’re lazy and can’t think of anything else to do with a team at that moment so their only solution is to break em up.

Back in the "day" the feud between two tag partners would be a few month, even a year long storyline. They break up on syndicated tv or even at a house show, they have time to cultivate the feud. When they were on the road 7 days a week and doing double shots, everyone would see the outcome of the feud and then there would be return matches and you can play everything up on tv. Now a team breaks up on Monday and next week they fight and then it's over or it's stretched a little longer with nobody caring.

D'Lo & The Godfather on Heat is one that springs to mind for me. I really loved their team & was upset when D'Lo ended it. Sure he then began a cool team with Chaz (headbanger Mosh) afterward, but he & the God daddy were straight pimp ballers.

Not only are teams not together long enough to care but most tag teams are just 2 singles guys thrown together these days. So when they split they're just like they used to be.
Back in the day tag team guys splitting up felt fresh and exciting to see them begin a career as a singles guy.

In SHelton's case he's been around for ages, so he doesn't scream "TAG TEAM" to me at all. It's like when Kane turned on RVD or Xpac or whoever, just didn't affect me because they weren't really a tag team guy

New Day recently would have been the only breakup feud that would have meant something. And in all honestly it would have def been better than anything either of them have done since, although I know they probably would never want to do it.
Uso’s could too I suppose it seems like it might be heading that way. I can’t see them doing literally the same exact thing they did with Jey now for Jimmy.
But yeah I can’t think of any other team at the moment where a internal feud would carry any weight. 6-8 months from now, everyone in teams will have a new partner anyways. Most guys these days — Tag Run, breakup for alleged singles run for one of the team members, fail to do anything with them, put back in a tag team with someone else. Rinse, wash, repeat. The whole women’s tag scene is a joke.

Because tag teams meant something back then. Vince hasn’t cared about the tag team division in what seems to be decades now. They are just thrown together now for a couple months. There should be at least 6-10 actual teams in the division at all times. And when one splits up there should be another to take it’s place. But Vince doesn’t care about the division anymore.

Most of your tag teams now days are established singles stars just thrown together. There's not connection/emotion behind it. About the only teams that have that solid tag team bond are Usos & Vikings Raiders...and who cares about seeing those guys fight each other?

Not every team needs to break up and feud; so that narrative plays out.
WWE booking has zero long term thought process; with the way it is now I feel like maybe they book a month ahead

Yeah, I think the blow-off match for their feud was at the king of the ring house show in late 1989. Though, I don't think any of those matches were televised. They did have a match on Saturday Night's Main Event in 1990, but it was just a throw-away match to keep the Martel/Jake feud going. |

The Strike Force split was good as it elevated Martel very well. Martel got a huge push and was frequently used as a solid mid-carder. Santana was a jobber, but the heels always still needed to cheat to beat him look at who he put over Warlord, Barbarian, Mountie. the Rockers was another big split Michaels went on to become a great singles wrestler with a huge run, Marty had spells of being decent but became but had to many personal issues to be trusted. Shelton and Cedric should have never been split from the Hurt Business, they were relevant. Cedric was pretty much getting squashed all the time before getting paired up.
The Bret/Owen was done very well even though it wasn't a long enough team. Solidified Owen has a great heel, the fans always wanted to see Bret beat him. Bret like a professional put Owen over at WrestleMania which was the right thing to do.
