The Luger face turn was so unexpected.
He's in the middle of a feud with Bret Hart on house shows and then we get this, so of course fans are like, "what... do we cheer?? I guess we cheer then!"
I believe too even after this, Luger vs. Bret happened on house shows but as two good guys and they would shake hands and hug after their matches. Yet a week earlier, Lex is trying to knock out Bret with the bionic elbow. Ha ha ha gotta love wrestling!

Wasn't it more than 18 years ago?
It was a great moment, and Luger did get over well. They pretty much killed his momentum by not letting him win the title at Summer Slam, then they made him look ridiculous by celebrating the way he did. Pretty much everything after that was not that great. They really should have turned him back heel at Summer Slam 1994, it would have been a much bigger turn than Tatanka. It also would have helped DiBiase's stable to have a big time face turn heel because of DiBiase's "money", making his catchphrase have more meaning. It also would have been better had Luger taken the title off of Bret at Survivor Series 1994 and dropped it to Nash at WM11. The Backlund turn was done very well, but it fizzled out shortly afterwards. Plus, at this time, the WWF was in need of a much bigger top heel. Most of the best talent in the company at the time were babyfaces, a heel Luger could have made things better.

And this was the beginning of the end for Luger in the WWF. They killed him stone dead with this face turn.

Why all the hate for the Made in the USA gimmick? Luger still got over with the gimmick, it was just the booking that ruined it.

In WWF's defense, they probably couldn't go with very many people who could make a body slam look legit. Could anyone else on the intrepid do a legit body slam even with Yoko helping them? Lex's may not have been perfect but could any of the other guys 1) do it just as well and 2) be someone that WWF could build PPV feuds around?
The football guys are out on the last one and guys like Tatanka and Steiner Brothers, Bob Backlund and Crush were not main event guys. WWF screwed up with the Summerslam ending but I guess they thought more of Yoko than Lex. Lex should have won the title and lost it to Bret at Wrestlemania while both guys were face.
Also, Tatanka was an awful choice the for heel turn. Tatanka is one of the nicest guys in wrestling, he can't play a heel. It would be like Tito or Steamboat trying a heel turn.

Luger turns baby in a big patriotic moment and then looks like a chump until he leaves two years later. He was going to replace Hogan and then they quickly realized that if you paint the America flag on a dull piece of wood it stays a full piece of wood.

It took many years before I noticed that Lex and Todd are wearing the same shirt on the Intrepid.

I've always wondered if Vince had Hogan in mind during the early planning stages of this? I've never read anything about it, but this seems like such a Hulk type of spot. Then again, Hulk was in arguably the worst shape of his career, so he might not have been able to pull off this spot.

Luger needed to win the title at SSlam 93...when he didn't? The entire thing died off...plus he never got another crack at Yoko until WM.
While thing was snakebite.

I mean it's Hulk freaking Hogan we're talking about. Also imagine instead of Lex, it was Sting who showed up?!

JR’s podcast this week was on Luger’s WWF run. JR told a story about how he thought it was the wrong decision and Gorilla Monsoon who was doing the radio call with JR thought they had basically killed Lex right there. It’s a rock and a hard place to me. I see the thought that Lex winning there would have been huge for him and fit with WWF being a traditional baby face champion organization. However, I can also see wanting to keep the belt on Yoko to build him up after having just won it 2 months earlier. Tough choice all around.

They could have done it if Yoko had won the belt and kept it at IX - I love Hogan, but that was the wrong call. They should've had Yoko beat Bret, then run through Hogan at a later date. This would build Yoko up as a legitimate monster who even the Hulkster couldn't beat. Luger comes along, slams Yoko, then wins the belt at SummerSlam. It really could've worked if Vince didn't go with Hogan's "idea".

He looked awkwardly thin at King of the Ring that year. That may have been an acting career choice, but he didn't look anything like the Hulkster we knew. I'm not sure he could have lifted and turned Yoko at the weight Hogan was in mid-93.

JRs podcast this week about Luger was very good. A lot more insightful than Prichards.
