I was unfortunately too young for the AWA, but I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve seen on The Network and YouTube, and what I’ve read of the long-standing promotion. Did anyone here grow up watching it? Which feuds did you enjoy the most? Which singles talents? Which tag teams?

Love me some AWA. Nick Bockwinkel is my fav champ from the promotion.
Also loved the Midnight Rockers/Somers/Rose feud. Fantastic stuff between these two.

Fantastic stuff between these two. yep, the rockers/pretty boy and playboy is imo one of the greatest tag team feuds of all time. I was born in 1990 so I never watched AWA in it's prime, however ESPN classics Canada aired a lot of AWA when I was a late teen so I caught some great stuff and made sure to tape it to my collection. that + YouTube, Limewire, etc. Vader's early years there as the baby bull is worth checking out Road Warriors start out where they more resembled gay bikers is must watch, especially the riot they caused slicing a young Curt Hennig open speaking of Curt he had good to great matches with Greg Gagne, Hanson, Lawler, Saito, and of course Bockwinkel Bockwinkel was the definition of what a traditional heel champion should look like. in some ways, he was an answer to Buddy Rogers being gone. |

I only watched it to get my Road Warrior fix.
It didn't have that "wow factor" that the NWA & WWF had. It just seemed second rate. Then I understood why years later- Verne Gagne was running things, he didn't have cable TV & couldn't watch what he was airing.
Granted, the Nick Bockwinkel/Curt Hennig 1 hour broadway is fantastic. You could see they were grooming Curt to be the next champion.
But I just got so sick of Verne pushing Greg Gagne down our throats.
Wasn't a fan of Lee Marshall, Eric Bischoff or Larry Nelson on the microphone, either.

I think Verne was just a hard ass too - he did not want to go where the business was heading, as was evident by him keeping the title on Bockwinkel and not going with the unskilled, but visually appealing and charismatic, Hogan. Verne was simply not of the times, he'd already been a part of a national expansion that had collapsed, and had soured on the NWA even before Vince Jr started his path. he made Ole look like an innovative new age booker in comparison. |

The AWA ESPN shows from Las Vegas were always so bright, and colourful and I really enjoyed those ones. I guess that would be the late 1985 - 1990 era I believe.
I too though missed out on watching AWA as a kid. I didn't see any episodes until I seen some matches on WWE DVD releases, or on ESPN Classic Canada.
I did however, own a Hulk Hogan AWA VHS and Sgt. Slaughter VHS so the stuff on there was back when AWA was filmed with the lights off on the fans and only one light above the ring. It was neat to see though.
