In late 99 he was over like crazy and could've become a top player in the company. Once he turned heel in 2000 he sunk down the card big time and never really recovered. He was too good for the role they gave him. When he turned heel and joined the Alliance in 2001 he was getting major heel heat. He was easy to boo and the “sleazy, cocky heel” gimmick fit him great. Problem is as soon as the Alliance angle ended he dropped back down and never seemed to get a shot at the top of the card again. A lot of people point to HHHs return and his reported dislike of Test, but whatever the reason, Test never seemed to get a shot to be a top guy again following his run in 2001.

I always preferred him as a face, but I admit his heel run was his biggest push since 99 and as you said it went nowhere. Once he cut his hair and switched to trunks he lost his whole image and the Stacey Keibler stuff was awful too.

What was the reason behind the shift from Test to HHH for the wedding? I'm not sure I ever read a reason. Was Triple H in need of a major storyline to take him to the next level as a heel or did management not trust Test could be a long term face? Whatever the reason, the switch changed a whole lot of wrestling over the last 20+ years.

I was very invested in Test/Shane's storyline. Very good worker and had a lot more to offer IMO

Test is in the same category for me as a Billy Gunn. Great look, great talent, super athletic...they had success in their own right, but never could put it all together. Guys like Test SHOULD have been more, easily could have been.
I feel like a guy like Test is the other side of the Undertaker coin. This is what happens when you have all the tools but no gimmick behind it. Undertaker could have easily been Test had he not found the Deadman character. An obviously skilled guy with a great look, but just couldn't find his place.

Whatever the reason, the switch changed a whole lot of wrestling over the last 20+ years. So this comes from HHH’s book, so take it with a grain of salt, but he says when Russo left for WCW, nobody knew his plans for how to end the Test/Steph angle. He says it was a combo of himself, Vince, and the writers coming up with the HHH twist. Honestly I find it hard to believe Russo was the only one who knew how the story would end, but regardless of how it happened, Test never recovered due to never getting his revenge on HHH. Russo was a big Test supporter which explains his strong push in 1999, but HHH had aparently killed an idea to have Test join DX, so we know Hunter wasn’t a fan of his from the beginning. Regardless of what happened, Test as never the same after that story.
